Chapter 8
Brian had woken up in the middle of the night with no clue as to why. As he lay in his bed, looking up at the ceiling, he pondered his sudden wakefulness. He suddenly felt the urge to go check on Emily.
As he drew closer and closer to her room, a sense of dread filled his body. He stood in front of the partially opened door and hesitated before opening it further.
He shook his head and finally swung the door quietly open. He looked at Emily; the blanket outlined her figure. She seemed fine and was resting quietly.
He went to close the door when something stopped him. He listened to the sounds of the room. He could hear the ticking of a clock on the wall beside him. He could hear the wind softly ruffling the leaves outside. Everything seemed fine; he couldn’t understand why he still felt uneasy.
He returned his gaze at the sleeping girl. Several minutes passed and in shock he realized that he couldn’t hear Emily breathing, nor see her chest move.
He switched on the light and darted across the room to the bed, “EMILY!”
Her body was still, and her skin had paled to a grayish blue. As he reached for her, her skin was cold and her eyes were closed.
He was just going to begin chest compressions when he heard her whisper.
“He’s nice.”
Brian leaned back in shock. Emily still looked dead but he had clearly heard her speak, even in a whisper.
“Yeah.”
Brian sat next to her and continued to listen as his sister began a one-sided conversation.
“I’m scared he’ll leave….He’s my brother….,” her whispered conversation began to get more frantic. “Uh, oh he’s coming back…Hide.” Her breathing quickened as if she had started to run.
“Here, in here….Shhhh….” minutes ticked by while Brian debated on what to do.
“I think he’s gone….I’ll go check….You stay quiet and stay here….”
Brian wanted to wake her but was scared that it might do more harm than good. He remembered reading about kids and sleepwalking and how it could be more damaging to suddenly wake the child, than to simply gently guide the child back to its bed. Despite her death-like appearance, he figured that as long as she kept talking, he wouldn’t disturb her.
“Come on….I’ll help….”
Several more moments passed, “Through here…Run…” Emily’s breathing once again increased.
“Do you know where you live?…Let’s go….” hours seemed to pass, when in actuality it had only been a few minutes. Brian was just getting ready to wake Emily when the conversation started again.
“I have to leave now….Go straight home, okay….Remember you’re not supposed to talk to strangers, okay….Bye”
Brian happened to glance at the clock and realized that about two hours had passed from when he had first knelt by Emily’s bed, watching and listening.
He noticed that the color was returning to Emily’s face and that her breathing had returned to a normal pace. Placing his hand on her forehead, he felt for a fever but everything seemed normal.
As he removed his hand from the girl’s face, she opened her eyes slowly.
“Hey, are you okay?” he asked concerned.
She nodded her head sleepily.
“Are you sure? Do you want me to get you a glass of water or something?”
She shook her head.
“Oh…Okay, I guess…I’ll let you go back to sleep,” he got up from the floor and began walking backwards toward the door.
As he turned to walk out of the room, Emily spoke, “Brian?”
He eagerly swung around and walked back towards the bed, “Yeah?”
“I love you,” she said shyly.
He sat gingerly on the edge of the bed, “I love you too sweetie,” and he reached down to give the little girl a warm embrace.
As he pulled away, he noticed that the little girl was once again asleep. Brian didn’t leave the room until the sun had just begun to peak over the horizon. He decided that Emily was safe, and went to catch a couple of hours of sleep before beginning the day.
