Ghost Of You And Me

~Chapter Nine(Ghost of You and Me)~
That evening, Chloe sat sullenly next to an older woman who chattered on and on about her grandchildren. Chloe nodded and interjected with a few unenthusiastic remarks, but the woman didn't seem to notice her detached presence. In fact, she rambled endlessly for a good half an hour. Finally, she said something about airline food and took to the bathroom in a hurry. Seeing this as her opportunity, Chloe seized a pair of earphones from the stewardess and plugged them in.

What am I sued ted to do
With all these blues
Haunting me everywhere
No matter what I do

Brady's eyes flickered open slowly. His head, which was now pounding steadily, was resting on his desk blotter, inches from the half empty bottle of Southern Comfort. The dim light in the office made his eyes burn and he shut them again. His ears, however, now picked up on a slight fuzzy noise from his computer. He peeled one eye open to see what was wrong. The screen displayed an online radio station, its bars bouncing to a quiet rhythm that came out of the speakers as a small buzz. He painstakingly lifted his arm to turn up the volume.

Watching the candle flicker out
In the evening glow
I can't let go
When will the night be over

Chloe put her head in her hands, massaging her temples. The tears were threatening to fall and looking out at the darkened sky didn't help any. What was I thinking? The thought spun around her mind like a guided missile, searching for the bleeding wound of memories. Finally, it found its target and the tears silently poured down her cheeks.

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name
For what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

Brady wept openly, despite his pounding headache. The hand that had turned up the volume on his speakers closed over his face, allowing him to sob in private. "Chloe…" he murmured.

Seen a lot of broken hearts
Go sailing by
Phantom ships lost at sea
And one of them is mine

"Are you okay, ma'am?"

Chloe looked up, wiping her face. The woman in the chair beside her had returned, and she looked concerned. Chloe simply nodded her head and turned her face towards the window once more.

Raising my glass
I sing a toast to the midnight sky
I wonder why
The stars don't seem to guide me

"I have to stop thinking about this," Brady said, as the tears slowed to a steady stream and the sobs had subsided. Belle had been knocking on the door again, but he ignored her. She couldn't handle seeing him drunk and emotional. In fact, she'd probably feed him water and force him to throw up. He didn't want her interfering with his thoughts this time. He struggled to sit up.

"There's only one way to make me forget…for now."

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name
For what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

Chloe didn’t care what the woman next to her thought. The memories and flashbacks of Brady were far too painful for her to deal with. She pressed her forehead against the cool glass of the window, vaguely aware that they had begun to descend from the star-dotted sky. As they landed, the song that had been pounding in her ears played over and over in her mind, filling her with a sadness too deep to come out of. She silently went through the motions of exiting the plane and riding to her new apartment that was cold and lonely.

The ghost of you and me
When will it set me free
I hear the voices call
Following footsteps down the hall
Trying to save what's left
Of my heart and soul

Brady's hand limply clasped the bottle of whiskey and brought it to his lips. The liquid was like cold fire, burning his nose as it went down. "Now I can sleep," he whispered to himself. He could still hear Belle's consistent knocking and her worried voice through the thick cherry door, but it was soft and distant. In fact, the only thing that he seemed to be able to focus on was the image of Chloe in his head and the song still playing on the computer.

Watching the candle flicker out
In the evening glow
I can't let go
When will the night be over

Chloe lie awake for hours, praying that sleep would come to her, but to no avail. Her thoughts were whizzing around so quickly that she could barely breathe. The tears had long since stopped, but the dry sting they left behind constantly reminded her of the life she'd left behind…and the man she could never have. Finally, she fell into a restless slumber that would leave her groggy and feeling ill the next morning. But it was dreamless…something that made her thankful when she awoke.

I didn't mean to fall in love with you
And baby there's a name
For what you put me through
It isn't love, it's robbery
I'm sleeping with the ghost of you and me

Brady's head lulled back and forth on his neck before giving into the weight of it. Hggedgged in his chair and fell forward once more on the desk. It would be another hour or so before Belle could get in the office, so he left his life in the hands of fate, passing out to a dreamless unconsciousness.
