Chapter six

The eldest witch queen was just standing there as other cars sped by her as the “police officer” wrote her a very nice ticket. He kept going on about how many laws she had broken and how many people have been hurt because of her “little” stunt. Now, that just pissed her off. That had been more than just a little stunt. She had had fun while doing it and people got hurt in the process. That had been glorious!

Her gossamer fairy web gown billowed around her as did her long red hair. She could not help but smile as the young man kept ranting about how he did not know what to do with her. While running her long pale fingers through her rosy red locks, she walked over to him and held up her other hand, and pointed a long, very well manicured finger at his mouth.

“Be silent,” she commanded and a glowing green light shot from her finger and his mouth literally sewn itself shut.

The young man dropped his pad and pencil and began to frantically fight to open his mouth. She watched him as he raced around along the side of the road in a panic. She turned her head to the side and backed away as a huge vehicle called an 18 Wheeler was swerving rather badly across the white line.

A poisonous smile graced her beautiful glacial features and she pointed her finger at a wheel. With a word of power, the wheel exploded, and the officer spun around just in time to be hit by the massive machine.

The wind from the passing vehicle whipped through her hair as she watched the vehicle slam on its brakes. Her mouth fell open and she started to cackle insanely. There was hardly a thing left of the officer’s body. It was all mangled flesh and shattered bone fragments.

“Miss,” a man came running up from behind and she turned to see that he had pulled his big green truck over, “Are you alright? I saw everything. It was tragic? How are you?”

“Oh,” she said waving around a jeweled hand, “I’m just dandy.”

“Huh,” the guy asked in some surprise at how calm she was.

“Well,” she said bending down to pick up her ticket, “I’ll just be on my way then, you have a nice day.”

“But Miss,” the guy called out as she got back into her car as others came running as well, “You are a witness!”

She rolled her eyes. She had to get to that star. What is it with all these people meddling in others affairs? Back in her world they would simply be bopped over the head and thrown into a pool of flesh eating undines.

She muttered a more powerful word of power and stomped on the accelerator. The car took off leaving behind nothing but a trail of pretty green sparkles and flame. Everything was going great until she looked at her left hand to see that she had a large age spot.

She let out a scream that had people running off the road.

Clark let out a rather loud yawn as he waited for the bell to ring. He wanted to get home so that he could see how his star was doing. Wait! His star? That wasn’t right. Well, it was his football that knocked him out of the sky. And Kyle did say that he knew what Clark’s wish was. So, that did make him his wishing star.

He wondered what Kyle was doing right now to keep himself entertained. He really should have introduced him to the television. That would have kept him enthralled for hours.

What if he was getting himself into all kinds of trouble? What if he drowns in the bathtub? What if he puts his hand down inside the blender? What if he hurts himself out in the barn? What if he cuts himself with something really sharp and just bleeds to death? What if he gets bitten by some poisonous snake? What if some meteor freak decides to attack his house while he was away?

He was suddenly such a nervous wreck that when the bell finally did ring, he cried out and took off running out of the classroom leaving a very confused Chloe behind. She had never seen Clark look that pale…or run that fast before.

She rolled her eyes and quickly took off running after him, “Clark! You forgot all your stuff!”

“Where could he have gotten off too Jonathan,” Martha asked as the two of them raced around the farmhouse and barn trying to find Kyle, “What if he has gotten himself hurt?”

“He can hold fire in the palm of his hand, Sweetheart,” Jonathan said trying to reassure her as they ran through the apple orchard, “How much trouble could he get into?”

The two of them took off racing back to the farmhouse to check to see if he was in Clark’s room. They had forgotten to check there.

They raced up the porch steps only to stop when they saw Clark come walking out of the house with a scared look on his face, “Where’s Kyle?”

“We’re not sure,” Martha said going to him, “We were working out in the orchard and he said that he wanted to look around.”

“We told him not to leave sight of the house,” Jonathan said as the three of them walked back down the steps.

Clark began to look around the farm and suddenly took off in a blur. Both of his parents just looked at each other…they needed a breather.

Chloe could not believe that Clark had left without her. What in the hell was up with him? Where in the hell had he gone? He was not even on the bus. She was seriously going to throttle him in his sleep.

Did she not say that she was going home with him after school today?

“Ah,” she yelled as she clawed at the seat which had Pete and several other students raise some eyebrows, “I’m going to kick his ass!”

Kyle slowly opened his eyes when he thought he heard his “name” being called. He blinked several times to see that all manner of creatures were curled up next to him under the shade tree. He could not help but smile as he looked at them all.

There was bunny rabbits curled up at his feet, and a fox lying curled up at his hip. He had two baby deer nestled and resting their heads on his stomach, and he had a big rattle snake curled up on his chest.

That was when he looked up and saw Clark running towards him across the big green field. He had a mix of relief and horror painted on his face.

“Kyle,” Clark warned as he got closer when he saw the poisonous snake on his chest, “Don’t move.”

“Why,” Kyle asked as he started to pet the rattlesnake and the snake stuck out its tongue several times and leaned its head into the gentle touch.

Clark thought his jaw must have hit the ground because Kyle started laughing as the other little animals started to wake up. None of them seemed to care that they were adversaries. They were happy and content with just being close to Kyle.

He was twinkling happily and Clark just took a seat in front of him keeping a careful eye on the deadly serpent. If it so much as bared a fang he was going to hurl it to the moon. But, the snake just happily coiled itself around Kyle’s arm as he petted the baby deer and the fox. The bunny rabbits were nestling closer to his feet.

A soft echo of thunder could be heard in the distance and Kyle looked up to the sky wondering what that could have been. He brought his head back down to look at Clark who had a look of amazement on his face.

“What was that sound,” he asked.

“That was thunder,” Clark said, “A storm might be coming.”

“Storm,” Kyle asked and cocked his head to the side and started to giggle. The bunnies were tickling his feet with their soft whiskers.

Clark could not take his eyes off the star that had a poisonous serpent coiling happily around his arm and down his other one. Why was it not striking him? Did it have something to do with the fact that he is a star, or is this magic?

“Here,” Kyle said passing the pretty snake to Clark, “Why don’t you hold this little guy?”

“Little,” Clark asked, “That has got to be the biggest rattlesnake I’ve ever seen.”

Clark hesitantly took it from him and allowed it to do whatever it wanted as long as it did not try to hurt Kyle. He watched Kyle pick up a bunny and nuzzled it close to his face. The fox jumped in his lap to curl up and the deer were rubbing their heads against his arms.

“Tell me what these creatures are, Clark,” Kyle asked as he picked up another bunny to give it some attention.

“Well,” Clark said, “Those furry little white balls of fluff are called bunny rabbits. They are usually really shy around people and run whenever one gets close to them.”

“Bunny fluff,” Kyle laughed as he hugged the little ball of fluff close.

“That little guy in your lap is called a fox,” Clark said and smiled at the cute little guy, “And those two nuzzling your arms are called deer.”

Kyle smiled and repeated their names before pointing at the pretty guy Clark was playing with.

“And this,” Clark said looking the snake over, “Is called a rattlesnake.”

“You seemed frightened when you saw him on me,” Kyle said and then frowned a little, “Why?”

“Because he is deadly to people,” Clark said truthfully, “He is poisonous and will strike at anything if he feels threatened.”

Kyle reached out and stroked the little guy’s pretty head again, “What is that on his tail?”

“That is a rattle,” Clark said, “Its how he gets his name. If he feels threaten, he will rattle it to warn other creatures or people away before he bites them.”

“So he warns them,” Kyle smiled, “Then it is their own fault if they get bitten?”

“Yes,” Clark said agreeing with him. The snake had not once rattled, so he did not feel threatened.

“They are all beautiful,” Kyle smiled happily and pulled the little fox closer to him so he could give it a big hug.

Clark let the snake go and it quickly made its way back to Kyle where it rested.

“We really should be going,” Clark said feeling sort of bad that he had to cut this little scene short for Kyle, “The storm is getting closer.”

Kyle looked up at him from the critters and nodded. Clark watched him as he looked at each animal and they seemed to just slowly back away from him so he could get up. It was one of the oddest and coolest things he had ever seen.

Clark turned around to lead him back to the house but not without Kyle taking his hand in his. He felt Kyle squeeze his hand affectionately, and he looked over at him to see that he was glowing happily. It was as though his skin just radiated silver and ivory light.

“You really had my parents scared when you didn’t come back to the house,” Clark said, “And me.”

Kyle looked up at him and his glow faded a little, “I’m sorry.”

“No, no, it’s all right,” Clark said quickly changing his tone to a soothing one, “We were just worried that you might have gotten hurt.”

That made him seem to glow even brighter, “You care what happens to me?”

“Of course,” Clark said and squeezed his hand in reassurance, “You’re part of the family now, Kyle Hudson.”

Kyle beamed and it was pure silver.
