Misunderstanding
Chapter 7
The next morning, Luke drove a determined Bo to Cedar City. Parking in front of the Cedar City Police Department, he climbed out of the pick-up and walked to the passenger side. "Bo, you ain't changed your mind have ya?" Luke asked, when Bo made no move to get out of the truck.
"Nah, I'm just having a hard time moving," Bo replied.
Luke didn't say anything, he just pulled open the door and helped his youngest cousin out of the truck. Taking Bo's arm, he began to walk towards the jail, stopping a few steps later when Bo pulled against him. "Come on Bo, I'll be there with you the whole time, I promise."
"What if they won't let you stay?" Bo asked, refusing to move another step.
"You ain't gonna have to worry about that Bo, there ain't no way they can make me leave," Luke assured him.
Taking a deep breath, Bo tried to stop shaking as he finally managed to move one foot in front of the other. "I can do this," he whispered, forcing himself to keep moving towards the doors.
"Hi, we're here to see Detective Richardson," Luke told the officer at the desk.
"You are?"
"I'm Luke Duke and this is my cousin Bo."
"If you'll have a seat over there, I'll let him know you're here," the middle-aged officer told him.
A few seconds later, they were being led to an office in the back of the jail.
"Hello, I'm Detective Richardson," Kevin Richardson introduced himself, coming around the desk and holding out his hand.
"Hi, I'm Luke Duke," Luke replied, taking the offered hand. "This is my cousin Bo," he continued, motioning to his cousin.
"You're the one who called last night?" Detective Richardson asked, as he shook Bo's hand.
"Yes sir," came the quiet reply.
"Bo I know this is hard for you, and I just want you to know I really appreciate the help. If you'll have a seat we can get started," Kevin instructed. Moving back to his chair behind the desk, he glanced sympathetically at the young man sitting across from him. "Before we start would you like something to drink?"
"No sir, thank you," Bo answered.
"Alright, why don't you tell me what happened and take all the time you need."
"Yes sir," Bo said, looking down at the floor, unable to meet the detective's eyes. "I was at a bar called Our House two nights ago. When I left to go home I was attacked before I could get to the truck I was driving. Somebody grabbed me and pulled me into an alley, I tried to fight back but there were five of them and they were all big guys. I didn't get a good look at most of them, it was just too dark and everything was happening so fast. They thought I was gay, I'm not, but they thought I was and they wouldn't listen. They just kept hitting and kicking me, calling me names and..." Bo paused, glancing at Luke with an odd look on his face.
"What is it Bo?" Luke asked, concerned by the way Bo had suddenly stopped speaking.
"I forgot Luke, I swear I did," Bo rushed to explain.
"Forgot what?"
"They said that if they ever saw me again, they'd kill me. I wasn't trying to keep it from y'all..."
"It's alright Bo I know ya weren't," Luke assured him, hating to see his cousin getting upset.
"What happened after that Bo?" Det. Richardson asked, getting the meeting back on track.
"They left after a while, not sure how long. I thought they were all gone and I started to get up, that's when he came back. He knocked me back down and then pulled me to my knees. He said that he had a problem and he wanted me to take care of it for him. I didn't know what he was talking about at first, but he was pretty quick to let me know. He put a gun to my head and told me to...I tried to tell him I wasn't gay, but he hit me in the head. He said if I didn't," Bo paused, swallowing hard and taking a deep breath. "Hesaidhe'dkillmeifIdidn'tsuckhiscock," Bo said in a rush, feeling as though he would choke on the words if he didn't get them out quickly. "After he was done, he shoved me back to the ground and then he left. I ain't sure how long I laid there, but at some point Bobby Jensen came over and squatted down beside me. He told me thanks for the show, that it was the best one so far. He left and I just kept laying there, after awhile I heard a door slamming and I guess you could say it woke me up. I got up and made it to the truck, then I drove home."
"Thank you Bo, I do need to ask you some questions okay?"
"Yeah," came the whispered reply.
"You said that you aren't gay, so could you tell me why you were in Our House?"
"I was meeting a friend, I've known him since high school. He met somebody, they plan to spend the rest of their lives together and he wanted me to meet him."
"Must be a pretty good friend," Detective Richardson observed.
"Yeah, like I said I've known him since high school. I helped him out when his folks kicked him out, he left Hazzard after graduation and we've stayed in touch since."
"I'll need his name and his friend's name," Kevin told him, pen poised to take down the information.
"Um, do you have to? I mean why do you need to know? It's not like they were with me when it happened."
"Is there some reason why you don't want me to know?"
"I just don't want to cause any trouble for them," Bo explained.
"Well I can understand that Bo, but I really do need their names. I know you don't want to believe badly of your friend, but I need to make sure he wasn't involved with what happened to you. In addition to that, they may have seen something that at the time didn't mean anything to them, but now it will."
"If I tell you their names, will anybody else know who they are?" Bo asked, determined to protect Chris and Ray if he could.
"Well, my captain will know, but unless they are needed as witnesses there wouldn't be any need to let anybody else know their names."
"Bo, he told you to give their names if it was needed," Luke reminded him.
"Chris Taylor, that's my friend from high school. His lover's name is Ray Miller," Bo finally told the detective.
"How do I reach them?"
"Chris works at the Cedar City bank, and Ray is...he's a cop," Bo reluctantly replied.
"Ah, now I understand. I can't promise to keep their names quiet, but I'll do my best. Now can you describe your attackers?"
"About all I can tell you about most of them is that they were big guys, between six foot and six foot, eight inches. There are a couple I can describe better though. The one who came back and made me use my mouth on him, he was three or four inches taller than me. Um, he was wearing a green plaid shirt and I'd say he was about fifty pounds heavier than I am. His hair was brown, but I couldn't see his eyes..."
"How long was his hair?"
"I guess it was about shoulder length and it was kind of wavy."
"You said he was heavier, what kind of build did he have? Stocky, lean, muscular?"
"Um, well I guess he was mostly muscle," Bo replied.
"Did he have any tattoos or other identifying marks?"
"Yeah, he had a scar on his left cheek. It looked like somebody had dug a bad spot out, you know like a bad place on a potato or something."
"Okay Bo, that's a good description, anything else?"
"Not about him, but I did get a pretty decent look at one of the others. He was wearing a brown t-shirt and was my height, but real skinny. He didn't have any hair at all, but he had a red mustache and freckles," Bo described. "I didn't see any tattoos or anything on him, I'm sorry I can't tell ya more," Bo apologized.
"You did fine Bo, believe me it's more than we had before," Det. Richardson told him. "We have had other victims come forward, but about all they could tell us was that there were five big men. Also in each case, the one man returned and sexually assaulted the victim. I want to thank you for coming in Bo, there is one thing I need to ask. If we find any of these men, will you be able to testify in court?"
"I..." Bo was about to tell him no, when he looked towards the hall and saw Bobby Jensen smirking at him as he was led past the door. "Yes, I'll testify," Bo said, loudly enough for Bobby to hear him, wiping the sneering look from his smug face. The look of shock on the other man's face was almost worth the feeling of panic that Bo fought to keep from his own face.
"Bo?" Luke called, trying to get his cousin's attention away from Bobby Jensen. Luckily, the officer who was escorting Bobby, moved him further down the hall and out of sight.
"Did you say something Luke?" Bo asked, turning back to the other men in the room.
"It wasn't anything important Bo," Luke replied. "What's going to happen to Bobby?" Luke asked the detective.
"He's being taken to interrogation right now, he'll be questioned about his involvement in not only the attack on Bo, but the others too. Bo, the other victims reported another man coming up to them afterwards and thanking them for the show. None of them could give us more than a general description of the sixth man, but we're pretty sure that Bobby Jensen is that sixth man."
"So I really am helping?" Bo asked, sounding surprised.
"Yeah Bo, if it weren't for you we wouldn't have found Jensen. Hopefully he'll lead us to the rest of them, and we can end these assaults. Now if you'll wait here, I'll have you're statement typed up and after you sign it we'll be done." Kevin told Bo, picking up the papers from his desk and leaving the room.
"You okay cousin?" Luke asked, after the detective had left.
"No, but I'm glad I reported it. Don't worry Luke, I'll get through this okay," Bo assured his older cousin.
"You're wrong Bo, we'll get through this. You aren't in this alone Bo, you've got me, Daisy and Uncle Jesse. We ain't gonna let you deal with all of this by yourself," Luke reminded the younger man, squeezing his shoulder in a gesture of support.
"Thanks Luke, I apprec..." Bo trailed off when the door opened and the detective returned.
"Alright Bo, I've gotten your statement typed up, all you need to do now is read and sign it. I don't know when this will go to trial, but we'll call you when it does. Well, actually it'll be somebody from the district attorney's office that will call. Do you have any questions?"
"No, I guess not," Bo replied. Taking the papers from the detective, he began to read. Once he was sure that the statement was correct, he signed it and handed it back to Detective Richardson.
"I have a question detective?" Luke said, surprising Bo who had just begun to stand up.
"Yes Mr. Duke?"
"Do you think these men will come after Bo?"
"I doubt it, if Bobby Jensen tells us what we need to know then he'll be kept away from the others, so he won't be able to tell them Bo's name. If he doesn't tell us, there's no reason for them to come after Bo. To be honest, I'd say that Jensen has more to worry about than Bo, after all he knows or probably knows who they are. All Bo can tell us is what a couple of them look like, which reminds me. Bo we do need one more thing from you, do you think you could meet with a police sketch artist if Bobby doesn't talk?"
"I guess so, but I don't know if I could tell you enough to get a picture drawn," Bo doubtfully replied.
"Why don't you just have him meet with the sketch artist today?" Luke asked.
"Well we're not that big of a city Mr. Duke, we'll need to have a sketch artist from Atlanta come down here. Given the expense of doing that, we don't want to bring him in unless necessary," the detective explained.
"Oh, well I guess that's it then," Luke stated, standing up and going to stand beside Bo.
"We'll be in touch Bo, thank you for all of your help," Detective Richardson said, again shaking Bo's hand. "Good-bye."
"Well Bobby Jensen, you've been a bad boy haven't you Mr. Jensen?" Kevin asked, stalking into the interrogation room and slamming a folder onto the table.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Bobby denied.
"Oh I think you do. Let's see from what we've been told you like to watch while other men are raped. Does it get you off Bobby? Is that why you watch? Maybe you wish it was you who was doing those men. Yeah, but you can't can you? Cause you're not man enough, so you let other men do what you'd like to and you watch from the shadows, too afraid to do anything else!"
"I'm more of a man than you'll ever be!" Bobby yelled, standing up and throwing off his lawyer's restraining hand. "I sure never wanted to fuck any of them faggots, and if you're trying to protect them instead of real men it must be because you're not a real man. You ain't got no right holding me, I never laid a hand on anybody..."
"No of course you didn't, you just watched like the coward you are," Kevin calmly interrupted.
"So, there ain't no law against watching some faggot sucking cock, or taking it up the ass," Bobby sneered, finally sitting back down.
"You admit then that you watched while five men beat a young man two nights ago in an alley near Our House?"
"Yeah I watched, so what?"
"You watched while one of them came back and sexually assaulted him?" Kevin asked.
"Like I said, ain't no law against watching," Bobby insisted.
"How many other's have you watched?"
"Mr. Jensen I really must advise you to..." Bobby's lawyer tried to caution him.
"Shut up!" Bobby snapped at the court appointed lawyer. "A few, I ain't been counting."
"Well now you see that makes me wonder Bobby, just how is it that you knew when to be in that alley?"
"I was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time," Bobby smugly replied.
"Or maybe you know one or more of the men who are committing these assaults," Kevin suggested.
"Prove it."
"Oh I will Mr. Jensen and when I do, I'll see to it that you don't get out of prison until you're a very old man."
"You can try," Bobby arrogantly told him. "We through here now?"
"Yeah we're through, take him back to his cell," Kevin told the guard. Standing up, he left the room and went to find Officer Ray Miller.
"Officer Miller, could I speak to you for a minute?" Kevin asked, as he joined the other man in the small diner.
"And you are?" Ray asked, though he had his suspicions.
"I'm sorry, I'm Detective Richardson, I'm investigating the attack on Bo Duke," Kevin answered, holding out his hand.
"I doubt there's anything I can tell you detective, but I'll do what I can," Ray sincerely told him.
"When did you meet Mr. Duke?"
"Two nights ago, my friend Chris has known him since high school and he wanted us to meet each other."
"Why?"
"I'm sure Bo already told you that Chris and I are a couple," Ray said. At the other man's nod, he continued, "What he probably didn't tell you is that he's the reason Chris is even here. You see when Chris' folks found out about him, he was a senior in high school. That didn't stop them from throwing him out though, it was Bo Duke that gave him a place to stay and helped him to keep food in his belly. If it hadn't been for him, Chris probably would've ended up on the streets of Atlanta. I don't think I need to tell you what kind of things could've happened to him. A little while after gradutation, Chris left Hazzard, but he always stayed in touch with Bo."
"How do you feel about that?"
"Do you mean am I jealous? No, I'm not, I'm grateful to Bo for the help he gave Chris. Besides, while I suspect Bo isn't quite as straight as he believes he is, I don't think he knows it. I also don't think he would ever make a move on Chris or anybody else that was in a relationship."
"Alright, now what time did he leave the bar?"
"Ten o'clock," Ray firmly answered.
"How can you be so sure?"
"Cause Chris made a remark about how early it was, Bo said he had chores in the morning."
"What time did you and Chris leave?"
"I'm not sure, probably about twelve thirty or one."
"Did you notice anybody who seemed unduly interested in Bo? Did anybody follow him out of the bar?"
"No, there were a few men who were interested, but none of them did anything but look. He left alone and I didn't see anybody follow him, but I can't swear they didn't."
"Thank you Officer Miller, I'll try to keep your name out of this, but I can't promise," Kevin honestly told him.
"I appreciate that detective, and I won't say that I'm in any hurry to be outed to the entire department. But I want the scum who attacked Bo and those other men caught, so if you can't keep my name out of it, I'll deal with that." Ray laid the money for his meal on the table and stood up, "Was there anything else detective? If not, I need to get back on patrol," Ray explained.
"No, I think that's it," Kevin answered. "I'll be in touch if I need anything else, and Ray I promise I'll do all I can to put the scum who did this away for a very long time."
"I hope you do detective, I hope you do," Ray said, before walking out the door.
