Chapter 7

“Have you still got my daughter in there Doyle?” Katie tried to hide her laugher behind her hand. Ray shook his head at the stupid question.
“Push!” he ordered and the door clicked open. Minutes later Bodie knocked on the flat door and Katie bounded over to the door to let him in.

“Hiya Dad.” She was bouncing around the flat and Bodie scowled at her.

“Well someone’s in a good mood.” He grumbled as she handed him a cup of tea and kissed him again. Bodie caught sight of Doyle’s grinning face and groaned. “Just what I need, you grinning at me like the bloody Cheshire cat.” He grumbled and both Katie and Ray laughed at him.

“Here, food’ll shut you up.” Doyle put a plate of bacon and eggs in front of him and Bodie cheered up for the first time since yesterday.

“How’d the stake out go?” Doyle asked tucking into his own plate of bacon and eggs.

“Don’t ask. Bloody waste of time. Nothing.” Doyle knew how much Bodie hated stakeouts. He fondly remembered some they’d been on. Bodie could not stop yawning.

“Come on Dad, let’s get you home to bed.” Katie picked up her jacket and kissed Ray. “Buy gorgeous” she walked out of the flat.

Three months later Katie showed up at Ray’s flat hysterical. She was a mess. Red eyes, tear streaked face. Ray took one look at her and pulled her into his arms. Gratefully she went to him. She was crying so hard that Ray could not make sense of what she was saying.

“Katie, calm down. What’s wrong love. Is it Bodie?” Ray was getting worried. Katie shook her head and wiped her eyes.

“I’m pregnant.” She wailed and Doyle froze. Oh shit no! He thought. This was not what he wanted. He held her tight and waited till she stopped crying.

“Are you sure?” He asked and Katie nodded miserably.

“This is the second time I’ve missed my monthlies.” She admitted sniffling.

“Why didn’t you tell me before this?” Ray demanded. Katie shied away from him.

“I didn’t want to worry you. I thought they would come this time but they haven’t.” Katie looked at him and big tears pooled in her eyes. Doyle pulled her close again and let her cry. Fuck, Fuck, Fuck he thought pissed off. It must have been our first time he realised thinking back. They’d always used a condom since then even though he hated the damn things.

“Have you told Bodie?” he asked and she shook her head.

“No. I don’t particularly want to either.” Katie admitted.

“Well I don’t think we have much choice love. Come on.” Doyle put his hand out to her and Katie look up at him teary.

“He’s going to hate me Ray.” She moaned and stated to cry again.

“No he won’t luv. He loves you so damn much. He’s not going to be too impressed with me though.” Doyle held her while she cried. Now you’ve fucked up two lives sunshine, very clever! Doyle thought to himself bitterly.

Bodie opened the door, beer in one hand and ham sandwich in the other.

“Whatcha doin?” He mumbled around a bite of sandwich. They both walked in the flat and Ray pulled Katie close. Bodie looked suddenly suspicious.

“What’s wrong?” He demanded.

“We’ve something to tell you.” Doyle said and felt Katie shake with fear. Doyle put his arms around her and held her close.

“What?” Bodie demanded worriedly. Katie looked up at him, a picture of misery.

“Sweetheart what’s wrong. For God’s sake tell me. It can’t be that bad!” Bodie pleaded.

With tears running down her cheeks Katie mumbled “I’m pregnant” and Bodie felt his face drain of all colour. He glared at Doyle and Doyle shook his head. Not now!

“How long?” Bodie asked resignedly. He was pissed off but his daughter’s welfare came first and he had to figure out what had happened.

“Six or eight weeks. I’m not exactly sure.” She whispered.

“It must have been our first time.” Doyle volunteered the information and Bodie glowered at him.

“Thanks friend.” Bodie snapped sarcastically as he handed Doyle a beer. Bodie walked over to her and Katie shied away in fear. Bodie was hurt.

“Sweetheart. I’d never hurt you. You know that.”

“You must hate me. I’m just like mum, a little slut.” Katie burst into tears again and Bodie pulled her into his arms and let her cry. He meet Doyle’s eye over the top of his daughter’s head and sighed. This was all a monumental stuff up. So much for your brilliant ideas Bodie he thought.

“You’re not exactly who I’d have chosen for a damn father-in-law.” Doyle grumbled and Katie pulled out of Bodie’s arms in shock.

“Yer well you aren’t exactly my choice for a son-in-law either sunshine.” Bodie snarled.

“What?” She demanded.

“We’ll have to get married so that’ll make him my father-in-law.” Doyle explained and Katie turned on both of them. She had a temper to rile her father’s and right now it was at boiling point. She walked over to Doyle and jabbed him in the chest with her finger.

“First of all Raymond bloody Doyle we don’t HAVE to do anything and secondly I don’t recall being even asked to marry you so you can bloody well forget it.” Bodie opened his mouth to say something and she turned on him. “And as for you William Bodie, don’t you dare say a damn word. You left mum pregnant at 15 so don’t you dare tell me what to do. Go to hell both of you!” Katie picked up her jacket and slammed the door behind her as she stormed out.

“Bloody hell she’s got a temper.” Doyle commented surprised.

“Oh don’t I know it.” Bodie replied stunned.

Three hours later Katie had not come home and both men were frantic.

“Where the hell can she have got too?” Bodie said worriedly. Doyle shook his head.

“No idea. We’ve checked with all her friends.” Doyle glanced at Bodie worriedly. “Now what?” He demanded. Bodie shook his head. He’d never been this scared in his life. Oh he could handle danger to himself but not knowing where Katie was and if she was OK was killing him.

“I can’t loose her now Doyle. I can’t.” Bodie said. “She’s just a little girl and it scares the hell out of me that’s she’s out on these mean streets alone.” Ray had never seen Bodie this upset.

“We’ll find her mate. We have to.” Alive I hope he silently added. They were doing the rounds of the streets of London, again. Suddenly Doyle grabbed Bodie’s arm

“Stop!” He bellowed and Bodie slammed on the breaks. He followed Doyle’s pointed finger and gasped in shock.

“She’s bloody gone home.” They’d stopped near Bodie’s flat and the lights in his flat were on. “We’re traipsing around in the middle of the damn night looking for her and she’s bloody well gone home!” Bodie was furious. He slammed the car door and walked across to his flat, Doyle close on his heals.

“She’s upset Bodie. Leave her alone hey!” Doyle stopped Bodie before he could open the door. The look he threw him was murderous.

“Don’t you start telling me how to treat my daughter Doyle. Not after what you’ve done.” He snapped and opened the door. Katie whirled to stare at them.

“Dad!” She squealed shocked. Both men stood there glaring at her.
“Where the bloody hell have you been Katie. We’ve been worried sick.” Bodie ran his hands over her to see if Katie was all right. She was.

“I’m fine. Just thinking. You want a cuppa?” Katie wandered off to the kitchen and Bodie and Doyle followed her.

“What about love?” Doyle asked, knowing he’d handled it all wrong.

“Us.” She said looking at him “this” she patted her still flat belly “work, Dad, everything. I just need some time to get used it Ray. You do understand don’t you?” Katie pleaded with him.

“Course I do love. It’s a hell of a shock.” Bodie actually chuckled.

“It’s not funny Dad.” Katie hit him then handed him his cuppa.

“Sorry love. I’d say that was an understatement. I’ve just got used to having a daughter and now I’m gonna be a bloody grandfather before I’m 34.” Katie hugged him from behind and kissed the top of his head.

“And you’ll be such a cute grand-daddy.” She said it so sweetly Bodie chocked on his tea. Doyle was in fits of laughter.

“Shut up Doyle!” Bodie growled but Doyle only laughed harder. Bodie kicked him under the table.

“We’ll see who’s laughing when the Cow pulls you in at 5:00 am and you’ve had no sleep cause the baby’s been crying. You just wait sunshine.” Bodie threatened and it sobered Doyle up.

“Thanks grand-dad.” Doyle said resignedly.

Cowley had given them both a tough lashing about being careless when he’d found out.

“Jeez I didn’t even get that lecture off my father.” Doyle had complained later in their office over a cuppa. Bodie grinned at him.

“How’s Katie?” He asked. She’d been spending a lot of time at Ray’s lately. Bodie felt he was losing her and he didn’t like it but she had to make her life without him now. She’d be 20 when the baby was born; she was due about February.

“She’s got her first appointment with the doctor today.” Ray said and Bodie gapped at him.

“She’s not been to the doctor yet. She’s bloody well at least three months gone!” Bodie was shocked.

“Yer will I don’t think she really wants to face up to it.” Ray sipped his cuppa.

“And what about you?” Bodie asked and Ray frowned at him.

“I’ll get used to it. It’s just a hell of a shock though. Can’t imagine me with kids.” Ray crossed his feet on the edge of the desk and continued. “You could have knocked me over with a feather but we’ve sorted it out so I guess we can only see how it goes. She flatly turned down my proposal, said I could repeat it if I wanted too when we’d sorted this mess out.” He sipped his tea. “She says exactly what’s on her mind. Kinda like her father!” He said and smiled at Bodie. Bodie stared back in wide-eyed astonishment as if to say who me!

They were still chatting about it when the door burst open and Katie ran into the office and threw her arms around Ray’s neck and kissed him. Must have gone well Bodie thought

“I’m not pregnant!” She cried happily. Her face beaming.

“You’re not!” Ray was astounded. “What happened? You were so sure!” Katie shook her head and laughed again.

“The doctor reckons the pill stuffed up my body clock which is why I’ve had no monthlies for three months now and apparently this can happen but no one told me.” She dug around in her bag and pulled out what looked like an ice cream stick and handed it to Ray. He looked at the stick and then at her puzzled.

“It’s a pregnancy test result.” She explained

“There’s nothing on it!” Bodie said and she laughed again.

“Yes I know. That means it’s negative. They even gave me an ultrasound and I’m definitely NOT pregnant” Ray swung her around in joy. Oh thank you God he thought relieved.

They all went out to dinner to celebrate and Katie dropped another bombshell.

“I’m moving out Dad.” She said just before desert.

“Huh!” Bodie replied for want of anything better to say.

“Why?” Ray asked.

“I’m moving in with three of the girls from work. We’ve got a flat and we’re sharing expenses and I think you need your space back again.” She kissed Bodie on the cheek. “And I won’t be far away so you can come and visit and I’ll feed you.” She kissed Ray also.

“You’re sure love?” Bodie asked a bit worried.

“Yes Dad. I’ll be fine and you can go back to entertaining your bevy of beauties without trying to explain your teenaged daughter to them and watching them do some fast math.” Bodie squirmed in embarrassment and they both laughed at him.

Bodie actually found that he missed having Katie around but he’d come home now and then and find the unit filled with her cooking and he and Ray would smile in glee and end up stuffed to the gills on Katie’s cooking.
