Chapter 07: Snake Pit
/~Yes, I love him. I’m in love with him. I won’t let him push me away. I will be his shield and buckler. ~\ she mumbled a silent prayer at that point.
A loud beeping sound caused Max to look at her pager. “Patient combative.” Dr. Max grabbed Sara’s hand “Come on, Sara. I think I need you upstairs.”
The scene that greeted them in the OR was just short of chaotic. Grissom was half on half off the table his one good foot planted on the ground; blood was dripping down his shattered left thigh pooling on the floor. He was wheezing as if he were breathing through a straw. Large red patches like hives were forming on arms and now bare chest. Several trays of instruments had been knocked to the floor. Grissom held the pulled IV line in his hand shaking it while trying to speak “Dem…..dem…..” But he could hardly breathe at this point let alone speak.
“Now everyone just stay calm. What’s going on! Speak up someone.”
“Dr. Maxine, the patient seemed to be in pain and we were getting ready to administer the pre-op sedative of Demerol…”
“My god don’t you read the charts; this patient is allergic to Demerol. See right here in the orders. There! Right there is the sedatives and anesthetics I called for. Are you trying to kill this man…Get the hell out of my OR. Shelley, go get some adrenaline and some antihistamines we have to get this under control. Sara, go over and try to get him calmed now. We’ll take care of this I promise”
Sara walked slowly over Gil. “Gil, honey. Calm down let me help you back on the table.” Gil couldn’t speak so he signed.
/*Sara, they don’t know what they’re doing…I’m not staying here…I don’t trust they’re competence…They nearly killed me…I’m having trouble breathing…Sara…Sara*/
“Ah Dr. Max, he can hardly breath. He wants to leave. He doesn’t trust your competence.”
She signed back to Gil /*Gil, if they showed you the medicines and I stayed with you through it, will you stay? You know I’ll protect you. I know your allergies. Please Gil. Do it for me. Do it for us.*/ Gil gestured with his hands.
“Dr. Max he agreed to cooperate but either he or I must see what you are giving him and I have to stay through the operation.”
“Ok, look I’m going to bring in a clean gurney, we have to give him this “ she handed the adrenaline to Sara who signed /*Adrenaline*/ to Gil. “And this” as she handed the antihistamine to him. “Tell him we will use amatol and Phenobarbital for sedatives he can take that and a special form of Hal idol that he can take as the general” Sara passed this information to Gil who nodded his agreement.
With Sara holding his hand and rubbing her thumb in soothing circles on top of his right hand, Gil was transferred to the new gurney. Dr. Max moved forward and administered the adrenaline, first. Immediately, his breathing seemed to ease as the swelling in his throat began to lessen. Dr. Max then injected the antihistamine into the new IV line and they wheeled him into the new OR.
“Ok, get Miss Sidle gowned now. We are going to have to wait now for a few minutes for Dr. Grissom to stabilize.” The activity intensified as new instruments were brought in and the special equipment needed was transferred from the old room into the new. “Ah Sara, I think we are going to have to change our plans a little. I can’t risk general anesthetic now. We will have to do a nerve block above the op site. Here are the medicines I plan to use. Don’t worry I promise he won’t feel a think. He will be in la-la land from these sedatives. I need you to keep him calm. Concentrate on him and you will both be ok. Explain it to him.”
Sara leaned down close to Grissom’s ear. “Gil, honey. They have to use a local nerve block. It’s too dangerous now to use a general anesthetic. I’ll be here with you. All the time, I will be holding your hand. Ok?” She looked into his eyes which were beginning to droop as he nodded his head in the affirmative. He whispered “Ok, Sara. Don’t go…ok.”
“Go ahead Dr. Carruthers. It is ok. Go ahead.”
Time seemed suspended. Sara kept up a soothing dialogue that quickly became a manta of relaxing calming soothing phrases and endearments while Dr. Maxine Carruthers worked as quickly and efficiently as possible to repair the shredded veins and arteries in Gil’s left thigh. Fortunately, the supply of donor veins and arteries was sufficient and they didn’t have to harvest any from Grissom.
Gil’s breathing remained slow and regular. She wasn’t sure if he was asleep, but he certainly looked relaxed. She had never really seen his face so relaxed and peaceful. Sara wondered if this is how Grissom looked when he was asleep.
The lines and wrinkles, the signs of care, woe and stress sank back into his face. There was a small slight grin on his lips as if he discovered some private cosmic joke to which only he was privy. Maybe it was a secret fountain of youth because at this moment he looked ten years younger. To discover this at such a time and in this place was startling and a little sad to Sara.
Did the job weigh that heavily on him? She was wrong they were wrong. Grissom was not a robot without any feelings. Oh, the horrid things they had said to him over the years. His friends, his supposed friends. And she was as guilty as the rest. He cared perhaps so much more then they did. It was obvious to her now how passionate and deeply he cared about so many things.
She knew she was plagued by nightmares. Her heart almost stopped when she thought about the nightmares that must haunt his dreams. He had been a CSI so many more years than she. Tears appeared at the corners of her eyes. And she thought back to the crime scene. Was it only a few hours ago? He was hurt protecting them. He had probably saved her life. Oh, the cosmos couldn’t be so cruel to take him away now. She kissed him on the forehead. “I love you so much, Dr. Gilbert Aaron Grissom. I will show you how much later. You silly fool. To put yourself in this position.”
She was startle when she heard a whisper so faint she thought it was her imagination. “I love you too.” Gil eyelids fluttered just a little. “I love you, too.”
“Gilbert Grissom,” she uttered softly with just a tinge of pique, “have you been awake all this time?”
Before he could answer, Dr. Carruthers touched her on the shoulder. “We are done for now, Sara. We need to take him back to ICU for a few hours of observation. Things went extremely well. You did a great job Sara. We have started heavy dose of antibiotics. Infection and blood clots will be our main problems now.”
“What? Done? How long?” Sara was confused. “It has been five hours, Sara. You two were obviously in your own world.” Dr. Max replied.
Her eyes asked the question her lips were afraid to form. “Yes Sara, he will make it. I am sure we saved the leg. And Dr. Grissom since you seem to be awake…we finished the vascular surgery. In a couple of days we are going to insert a rod inside your femur and attach some plates and screws to the bone to hold the displayed bone fragments in place.
We will be extremely careful with the meds I assure you…now I want you to relax and try to get some sleep…OK?” Grissom’s response seemed to be a sigh as his eyes finally slid shut as the gurney began the journey back to ICU with Sara still hanging on to his hand..
