FTG 6

Harm and Bud watch from spots in the office, never looking at one another to give a hint as to they were in this little plot together. Harriet went back to work and Mac notices she has an appointment with her OB/GYN that morning, an appointment with a realtor, that afternoon, and she has appointments to call her Uncle Matt and Chloe. She hopes Harm won’t be too upset she’s made other plans. Harm goes to Mac’s office about the Ensign Dove case.

“Hey Mac, have you got my notes from the Ensign Dove case?”

“Yeah sure. Hang on,” Mac says as she digs through the pile that is her desk, “So Harm, what are you cooking up?”

“What do you mean?”

“The flowers? The cryptic cards?”

“Yeah, I noticed you’ve been getting flowers, who from?”

“You haven’t sent them?”

“No, I’ve been too busy.”

“It doesn’t matter I suppose, I have plans on Friday,” says Mac, trying to throw Harm for a loop.

“Oh, what kind of plans?”

“Like it’s your business. Oh right sorry, we’re engaged so it is your business. I can’t say because it’s personal.”

“Okay, is something wrong?”

“Nope, nothing’s wrong. I just have plans.”

“All day?”

“Yeah. I should be back by 10pm on Friday.”

“Anything you need Mac.”

“I know. I’ll call.”

Harm goes back to his office and gets on the phone to Bud’s office.

“Mac’s got plans all day. Better call and change the reservations for just you and Harriet.”

“Something the matter, sir?”

“Don’t know. Mac’s got personal business and isn’t telling me, but she said she’s going to be back around 10pm.”

“Want me to have Harriet find out?”

“No, that’s ok. I’ll keep sending them and see if she has a change in plans. I’ll just make dinner.”

“Yes sir.”

“Tiner, I need to see the Admiral.”

“I’ll see to it,” Tiner hits the intercom, “Sir, Colonel MacKenzie needs to see you.”

“Send her in.”

“You can go in now.”

“Thanks Tiner.”

Mac enters the Admiral’s office and shuts the door behind her.

“What can I do for you Colonel?”

“I am requesting Friday off. Yes sir, I know it’s a holiday but it’s the only day the doctor’s office has available this week.”

“Is anything wrong?”

“Not that I know of sir. I’m just checking things out.”

“Well…”

“I’ll do overtime next week to make up the time. I can come in and work a couple hours. The appointment is at 10am.”

“Then I guess I can’t argue. Permission granted.”

Like clockwork the flowers come and Harriet goes off to Mac’s office. Harriet opens her card.

“I thought I’d let you know we have the sitter until Saturday afternoon, love, Bud.”

Mac just like she predicted the Capital U came.

“What do we have now,” asks Harriet.

“I’ll be with you. The W is an abbreviation for with.”

“Well, tomorrow’s the day. I hope we both enjoy it.”

Bud makes a semi subtle move across the bullpen to Harm’s office. Harm came in early to see if he could get off early to go to an appointment of his own.

“Morning sir. Could I see you for a minute?”

“Sure Bud. What can I do for you,” Bud shuts the door.

“I heard from Tiner this morning that the Colonel is only going to be in the office until 9:45 this morning. I thought if you wanted to get the rose to her you should…” Harm gets the hint.

“Any idea where she’s going?”

“Something about an appointment and she’s going to be working overtime next week to make up the time lost.”

“Right. Thanks Bud.”

“Your welcome, sir. Could you call and have them send mine early to Harriet?”

“Sure.”

Harm gets on the phone right away and calls the florist to have them cancel his delivery and move Bud’s flower delivery up to 9:30. He figured then was good because he was due to be in court with Bud at 9:00.

“Well if that flyboy’s going to do something he better do it soon. I’m leaving in 15 minutes.”

“Excuse me ma’am.”

“Yes, Harriet?”

“Well there was a delivery came but there was only one rose,” Harriet says hoping to be sympathetic to Mac.

“It’s ok Harriet, open your card. I know mine were from Harm.”

“Ok well, mine says, ‘be here tonight, at 7, at this address, and don’t be late.’ But this is our home address.”

“Then he wants you to meet him at home.”

“I’m sorry you didn’t get one this time Mac.”

“Don’t worry, Harriet. Now get back to work, I’ve got to get out of here. I’ll be out for the rest of the day.”

“Good luck Mac.”

“Thanks Harriet,” Mac says as she slips on her uniform coat, trench coat, and scarf.

Mac walks out to her car and notices a rose on her windshield with an envelope tied to it with a pink ribbon. She frees the rose and opens the envelope.

“Tonight. 11. This address and don’t be late,” she read. This time it was in Harm’s handwriting, but the address is unfamiliar.

Harm’s Loft Apartment
North of Union Station, Wash. D.C.
5:30pm.

The Admiral had let everyone go an hour early since it was a holiday and he had to leave early himself to go pick up Meredith at school. He was aiming for the Officer and a Gentlemen look. Harm grabs his keys after changing out of his uniform and checking his refrigerator, heading for the store. He picks up melting chocolate and dinner, aluminum foil, and something nice that they both can drink. Harm gets home and immediately puts the chocolate on the stove to melt. With a little aluminum foil and a funnel, he creates his own Hershey Kisses, complete with a little message on a little slip of paper. Harm puts the chocolate in the freezer to set before putting the slips of paper in. He grabs a beer and some pretzels to snack on since dinner will be rather late. He goes to his desk and pulls out the rental agreement for the place he found.

It was a fully furnished and tastefully decorated studio/efficiency unit in one of the most desirable buildings in DC. Dupont south Metro is one block away, the Ritz Carlton two blocks away. The utilities are paid and there is air conditioning for the summer and heating for the winter. No drafts even. Sure it was cozy, when he saw it, but now all he had to do was sell Mac on the idea. It was only 17 minutes drive to work from there. It had a relatively cheap rent; he and Mac can split it. Bathroom space really won’t be fought over, since they will probably be using the shower and the bath together. Fortunately, Tanner, the renter allowed Harm to take the keys and a rental agreement if Mac decided she wanted the place.

Mac’s Doctor’s Appointment
Bethesda, MD.
11:45am

Mac patiently waits in the waiting room to be called. She had been sitting for an hour and forty-five minutes already. The office had been so busy that morning that time seemed to pass by faster than the patients came in and out.

“Thankfully, this isn’t going to be one of those poking and prodding visits. Hope all those tests mean I’ll still be able to keep my deal with Harm,” she thinks to herself.

“Sarah MacKenzie? Sarah MacKenzie,” the nurse at the open door calls.

Mac tosses the 3-month-old Time magazine on the seat and starts for the nurse.

“I’m Sarah.”

“Follow me please.”

Mac follows her into the nurse’s station where she goes through the vitals check. Then the nurse takes her into the doctor’s office where Mac waits in a seat at the desk.

“Morning Colonel. I have your test results here. And I’m going to be frank with you,” the doctor says as she sits in her chair.

“Ok, says Mac fearing she has cervical cancer or something awful.

“The results are in, they aren’t the best but I’m hoping that with treatment and medication we’ll be able to help you conceive. Now, as for the plan of action, first, we’ll have to take you off the pill and get you on some fertility medications. Because of your age, you are at risk for infertility.”

Mac can see the woman’s mouth moving but she doesn’t comprehend what the doctor is saying. In her shock, all she can hear is her own voice and the millions of questions in her mind.

“What if I can’t get pregnant? What if I can’t keep our deal? Would Harm forgive me? What if we get married and he wants to start a family right away and I can’t. What about miscarriage? What if I lost our baby? What if I can’t forgive myself? Would Harm adopt? Would he always have a grudge against me because I couldn’t have his baby? Would he leave me for another woman because she was having his baby,” she thinks to herself.

The doctor stops talking and patiently waits for Mac to come back to the conversation. She could understand what Mac was going through because she had been in the same boat trying to get pregnant after 4 years of infertility. She had to take the time to breathe and accept the situation before wanting to deal with it and move forward.

“Sarah, I don’t want you to worry, we’ll take each step as it comes. Just breathe and I want you to take this prescription and get it filled at your convenience. Please call me any time if you have any questions. I’ll have my nurse call you when it’s time to see you back here to see how the drugs are working.”

“Yes doctor,” Mac says as she dazedly takes the small white slip of paper from her hand.

The doctor helps Mac stand up and walks her out of her office. Mac spends the money and gets the prescription filled before heading home.

Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown, Wash. D.C.
1:30pm.

Mac steps in the door carrying lunch by Beltway Burgers and her briefcase. She sets everything down and slips of her coat and heads for the bedroom. After changing into a sweat suit, she settles down and eats. The food made her feel better and took her mind off of the morning appointment. Mac dials up Joanie Silverstein, the person showing her the Valentine’s Day gift for Harm.

“Hello, this is Sara MacKenzie, I’m calling to confirm my appointment today at 6.”

“Oh yes, the property is being cleaned but it should be ready by 6 for a showing.”

“Good and I want you to bring the papers in case I should decide I want it then and there.”

“I will. See you then.”

Mac then dials up her Uncle Matt in Leavenworth, KS.

“Hey Uncle Matt. It’s Sarah, happy Valentine’s Day.”

“Hi Sarah, same to you. I’ve been expecting a call from you about now.”

“Why is that?”

“Well, I figured when Harm called me to ask for your hand I assumed I’d be getting a call to confirm what I’ve been thinking.”

“He did what?”

“He called to ask for your hand. He said he didn’t know where to find your mother so he thought I’d be the only family member left that he could ask.”

Tears were welling up in Mac’s eyes.

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him that I wished he was a Marine, but that I’d be glad to welcome a Navy man into the family.”

“He proposed in the White House rose garden just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. I wish you could be at the wedding.”

“So do I, but I’ll be there in spirit. You know that.”

“I do. I’ll let you go. I’ve got to call Chloe.”

Mac hangs up the phone and sobs a little. More happy tears, because of the love and care that Harm has taken to make her happy. Then she dials Chloe’s grandmother’s number.

“Hi Chloe, it’s Mac.”

“Oh hi Mac. Happy Valentine’s Day.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day Chloe.”

“Hey Mac, can I ask you something?”

“Yeah sure.”

“Can I bring a date to your wedding?”

“Chloe! Have you got a boyfriend?”

“Well, sort of. I wanted him to come so that he can meet you and Harm.”

“Then I suppose I’m ok with it. I’ll see what we can do about getting him to the wedding as well.”

“Cool, thanks Mac. Have you picked out a date yet?”

“Yeah, April 16th. I think about 2pm. I’ve got it written somewhere.”

“Cool. It’s in my date book. I’ll see if Keith can make it.”

“So that’s his name? Keith, Keith what?”

“Oh gotta go Grandma is calling me. Bye,” Chloe says as she hangs up.

“Chloe Madison get your butt back on the phone,” Mac says as she suddenly hears the dial tone.
