Chapter 6

Chapter 6

A few hours later found Chloe and Davis stopping at a gas station to fill up the tank and their stomachs. As Davis filled the tank Chloe went in to get their grub. She was standing at the checkout when a headline of a local paper caught her eye and she asked the old cashier to add the paper to the amount as she pulled one out. When she had the paper out her heart stopped in her chest. There had been a brutal murder of a woman near the motel Chloe and Davis had been staying at just recently. The paper said the woman was a prostitute who also worked as a maid at the motel during the day so she stay at the motel and have a somewhat permanent residence so she could raise her little boy. As Chloe read and cried over the story all she kept thinking was, “No one deserves to die like that, no matter their professions…and she had a kid. Now what’s going to happen to him?”

Just as she was about to turn the page and move on she caught something in the picture. She asked the man for a magnifying glass and put it up to the picture hoping to God what she saw wasn’t what she thought it was. “And it was, crap…an imprint of Davis’ crucifix in the dirt. So her being around wasn’t helping and it was now getting worse he was hurting innocent people now. How could she be so stupid?! She had wondered how he got enough money so they could stay at a hotel for a day or two, not a fancy hotel but nicer then the motel they were at. She had actually believed him when he said an old couple had needed help and they had given him the money as payment for his help. The poor woman lost her life and the money she was probably using to raise her kid all in one night because she ran into the wrong person, a person Chloe was traveling with right now. Maybe that girl was right, maybe there wasn’t anything left in Davis to save…but if there wasn’t anything to save what was she supposed to do?” she thought to herself as she looked at the magnified image on the paper.

~She Can’t Save Him song ends~

“Chloe you ready?” Davis came in to pay for the gas with a smile.

As he stepped up to the counter Chloe threw the paper away in the trash behind her hoping he didn’t see her looking at it so closely and smiled, “Yeah, just waiting for you.”

Once he had paid and helped Chloe carry everything out to the car. They were on their way again to wherever they were going this time.
