The red numbers on House’s radio blinked 6.30 AM. Still half in a dream, Wilson opened his eyes, then closed them again.
‘I saw the white light everyone’s always talking about.’
Confused and startled Wilson woke up again. ‘Huh – what?’
‘I saw the white light and I felt the warm fuzzy feeling. Just like everyone else does.’
‘Greg? Are you alright?’
‘I wanted to stay in that state. But I knew I couldn’t, just like a dream in which you know what’s really going on. I didn’t know why I couldn’t stay, though. But then I sort of turned my mind inside out and I saw you. I didn’t really see you, of course, but I remembered you.’
‘Are you talking about your experience when you were…’
House put his finger against his lips. ‘I’m only going to tell you this once.’
After a short silence, House continued his story, speaking out loud, in a strange, almost disturbing tone for this hour in the morning.
‘I remembered you, and with that, I automatically started to think about everything that had ever happened to me. I was trying to evaluate my life. And my conclusion was that I had never made it this far, or this long, for that matter, if you wouldn’t have been there. When thinking about my life, you were the first thing that came to my mind. I didn’t actually think it. I just felt it. I don’t understand how I was able to remember it all. I usually don’t even remember my dreams. I fell asleep, so I figured everything was okay by then.’
‘So you really have been dead.’
‘I guess. But I’m sure the whole thing only lasted about a minute, really.’
He sighed. ‘So that’s why I told you. You’re my friend. You had the right to know. I’ll never admit it to anyone else. But I have to say I never thought it would lead to this. And I certainly never wanted to make such a bad, sloppy story of it.’
‘I don’t mind,’ Wilson whispered. ‘Do you?’
‘You know what I was thinking all the time? ‘James, James, James.’ All the time.’
‘For how long?’
House held him tightly for a minute. ‘For some time now,’ he said, staring in Wilson’s eyes. ‘Quite a long time. I just never really knew I couldn’t live without you.’
He chuckled. ‘So… It’s the same with James. Who had expected that?’
