Needles and Pins

Carmel quickly and angrily made her way back to Klink's office. She was angry for fighting with Hogan and for her feelings towards Klink. She felt guilty for fighting with Hogan. Hogan was the last person that she wanted to fight with. He was almost like a big brother to her.

Carmel tapped the snow off her shoes. She composed herself before entering the office. She took in a deep breath and went in. Hilda looked up. Hilda had a small inkling of what was going on. She noticed how many emotions showed in Carmel's eyes. There was anger, guilt, sadness and pain in those eyes.

"Can I speak to the colonel?" Carmel asked.

"Of course." Hilda said. Carmel knocked softly on the door.

"Come in." Klink called.

Klink felt guilty for being in love with Carmel. She was thirty years younger than him and she was one of his nation's enemies. Yet, he couldn't help but love her.

He felt angry because he knew that their relationship couldn't possibly make it. They were from two different worlds. Yet, despite the social differences, Klink knew that there was something there. It was something pure and nothing short of wonderful. There was a soft knock on the door.

"Come in." He called.

The door opened and Carmel walked in. Carmel smiled. It was a remorseful smile. Klink smiled as he felt his heart race. Tears welled up in Carmel's eyes. Klink stepped forward and held her as she cried on Klink's shoulder.

"I'm sorry about earlier." She sniffed.

"Don't be. We both know the consequences of our actions and we both know that there is something between us. Besides, I should be apologizing to you for my actions. I was out of line for striking you and treating you like I did." Klink told her.

"This war is awful and pointless." Carmel said.

"But it does have one good point." Klink told her.

"What's that?" She asked.

"Us... If it wasn't for the war, we never would have met." Klink told her. Carmel laughed softly and dabbed at her eyes. Klink smiled and handed her a handkerchief.

"You've got a good point. That's the only good thing that's happened because of the war." Carmel said.

"You need to get back to your barracks before people start getting suspicious." Klink said.

"Yes, sir." Carmel responded.

"I figure that we can drop the title thing in private." Klink smiled softly.

"Of course... Wilhelm." Carmel blushed.

Klink smiled. He leaned forward and placed a soft, chaste kiss on Carmel's lips. Carmel and Klink smiled as they broke the kiss. Carmel headed back to the barracks.

The barracks grew quiet upon Carmel's entry. Carmel and Hogan locked eyed briefly. Carmel sat down on her bunk.

Newkirk studied Carmel's face. It was the face of a young woman in love.

"Carmel, love, can I talk to you outside?" Newkirk asked. Carmel nodded, got up and followed Newkirk outside.

"So, what's going on between you and the Iron Colonel?" Newkirk asked softly.

"We just talked." Carmel blushed slightly.

"That's all?" Newkirk asked with a small smile. He got a kick out watching Carmel trying to cover up her feelings.

"No. Not really." Carmel said, a small smile played across her features.

"Well? What all happened?" Newkirk pressed with a wide grin.

"A few kisses. That's all." Carmel giggled. The pair went back in. Hogan and Carmel briefly locked eyes again.

"Colonel, can I speak with you?" Carmel asked. The others held their breath.

"Of course. Step into my office." He said. He was still trying to calm down.

"What would you like to talk to me about?" Hogan asked, offering Carmel a seat.

"Thank you, sir." She said softly as she sat down.

"I want to apologize for earlier." She told him.

"Don't worry about it, Gregg." Hogan said. Carmel smiled.

"One more thing, sir." She said.

"Yes?" Hogan asked.

"Can I have your blessing, sir?" She asked him.

"About you and Klink?" Hogan looked at her.

"Yes, sir." Carmel said hopefully.

"Just promise me you'll be careful. I don't want to see something bad happen to a good kid." Hogan said with a soft smile.

"Thank you, sir." Carmel couldn't help but smile.

She extended her hand. Hogan took her hand and pulled Carmel into a half-embrace. Carmel felt so liberated. They exited Hogan's office.
