Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Ezra joined Vin in the kitchen fifteen minutes later. Vin was standing at the breakfast nook window, watching the birds in Ezra's backyard as they foraged for their midmorning snacks, and was sipping coffee - his coffee, very black with a lot of sugar.
"Hey," Vin said, as he half-turned from the window and smiled.
"Good day, Mister Tanner," Ezra smiled back... easier than he would have expected he could.
Walking to the sink to rinse out his cup and the almost empty coffee pot, Vin asked, "So, how much do ya wanna do ta this place? It's pretty bare." He set the cup in the top rack of the dishwasher and the pot back in the percolator, then leaned on the counter, facing Ezra across the kitchen bar.
Ezra thought a moment, then said, "Well, eventually - if I stay here, that is - I'd like to change... just about every surface in this place. Wood floors to replace that hideous carpet, granite counter tops, real wood cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms, instead of this cheap, particle board refuse..." He kicked lightly at the nearest bit of offending cabinetry. "However, working for the government as you do, you know that realistically I will not manage that for a few years yet... For now, I think I will settle for color on the walls and real furniture in every room."
Vin nodded, "That's doable." He walked past Ezra toward the front of the house. "We can get paint an' supplies at Home Depot. There's one just a few miles from here."
"'Home Depot'?" Ezra sounded confused to Vin.
Vin turned and caught the look on Ezra's face. It was in fact a look of disconcertment and possibly also revulsion.
"Did you say 'Home Depot'... The hardware store?" The expression continued.
"Yeah, Ezra... That's where they keep things like latex paint an' brushes an' such." Vin didn't want to laugh at Ezra's discomfort, but it was funny. "Don't worry none. Think of it as a positive thang. You'll git yer house painted an' I'll be with ya ta make sure nothin' too scary happens ta ya at the hardware store." Vin laughed.
"Oh, ha ha," Ezra said drolly. Still, when Vin laughed harder, his own mouth twitched. "Come on, we had better be goin'." He grabbed his keys, set the alarm system, hit the button for the Genie to open the garage door and walked out into the two-car garage. At the moment, there were only a few as yet unpacked boxes and Ezra's dark red 2006 Jaguar XK Coupe in it. The car was Ezra's pride and joy. It had caused him a fair bit of trouble with his coworkers at the FBI, but oh, how he loved it.
Ezra climbed into the driver's seat and popped his sunglasses out of the over-head holder. Putting them on, he engaged the keyless ignition once Vin was safely in the passenger's seat.
"How's it do that?" This was Vin's first time in Ezra's car and he was amazed.
"There's a computer chip in the key," Ezra said, dangling the fob from his right hand for a moment before he dropped it in one of the cup holders, as he checked his rearview mirror to reverse the car out of the garage, "which sends a wireless message to the car computer when I get in. When the break is engaged and I press this button..." Ezra gestured to the red button next to the gear shift. "The car's ignition is engaged."
"That's amazin'!" Vin's beat up old Jeep was all he needed, but like any modern American male brought up in a world of toy robots and radio-controlled miniature cars, he thought cutting edge technology was pretty damn cool.
