Chapter 6
Dean had a look on his face that he normally only reserved for airplane rides. He ran his hand through his hair and was about to say something when Sam chose that moment to come out of the bathroom. Thank god he had put all of his clothes on. Mara's eyes flicked to Sam and the smirk was renewed as she spoke. "Or are you the new daddy? How does that work uncle Sammy?" Sam's confused eyes flicked to Dean, but not finding any help there he looked back at Mara.
"Mara what are you talking about?" Sam asked, his puppy faces out in full force. Mara just dropped the sweet act and shrugged, she wasn't totally sure of what she just heard. She may have only been nine years old but, she knew what sex was. However what she just heard coming from the bathroom she really didn't understand.
Dean finally found his voice and stepped closer to Mara. "What did you hear Mara?" He asked softly, out of the corner of his eye he saw Sam's face go pale as he realized what must have happened. Mara slowly walked over to her bed and sat down staring at the pink and black stripped socks on her feet.
"Did you two just have sex in the bathroom? And if you did...why?" She looked up at her father with a very good copy of Sam's confused puppy face plastered across it. Dean's stomach just lurched uncontrollably. What the hell did he say to that. Yeah we did Mara, see your uncle and I have been having sex since he was fourteen and I was eighteen and we just can't keep our hands off each other. Oh yeah that would go over well. But before Dean said anything Sam walked over and sat next to her.
"Mara I'm sorry sweetie, you were not supposed to know about that. Your dad and I, we don't understand it either..but it just feels so right when were together. Always has, I guess." Mara lifted her head and looked at Sam and then smiled wide and hugged him.
"Thank you uncle Sammy, Thank you for talking to me like I'm an adult and telling me." Dean felt his stomach settle as he walked over.
"So am I invited to this hug or am I still in trouble?" Mara looked up at her father and tilted her head for a moment.
"No you're not in trouble, but group hugs are like way too weird." She let go of Sam and stood on the bed and threw her arms around Dean's neck. "It's ok that you and uncle Sammy like each other and before you say it, I'm not stupid enough to go telling anyone ok? I've had to keep alot of secrets my whole life, this one will be even easier. Cause really who wants to tell people your parents are brothers." Dean's eyes widened considerably and Mara laughed and fell back on the bed as Sam tried to cover his mouth so Dean wouldn't see him laughing.
"Mara, we're not ..I mean Sam and I were not together..I mean we are but not like that and Sam wanna save me here?" Sam looked up at Dean through his hair and smirked, shaking his head.
"Dad seriously it's fine, ok yeah I never want to hear that again unless you want to send me for some serious therapy. But I'm good really." She tried to cover a yawn and rolled over against Sam's hip. Mara looked up at the light switch and the light went off and before anyone could say a word she fell asleep again.
Sam blinked up at Dean a bit surprised. "Oh yeah didn't I mention, apparently Mara has your type of gifts Sammy, but hers are way more advanced." Dean went and sat on the other bed and looked over at Sam.
"Ok so Mara is special, makes sense since the demon came for her." Dean shook his head and layed back on the bed.
"Thanks for the cliff notes on that Sammy." Sam rolled his eyes and carefully moved himself off the bed and Mara into the bed before he walked over to Dean and layed next to him, moving closer so he could lay his head on his brother's chest.
"She called you Dad." Sam whispered against his chest. Dean smiled slowly and started to stroke Sam's hair.
"I know."
The room filled with the sounds of their soft breathing as all three occupants fell asleep. Oblivious to the dark figures outside their window, wanting what was inside.
When the sun finally broke over the horizon only two people were still inside the room. Mara had woken and went outside as soon as the sun came up, she walked over to the window and was looking at the ground beneath it. She was fascinated with the markings on the ground and wondered if she should tell her father. She didn't have to think about it for long because within minutes Dean came running out in just his boxers, large knife in hand, calling her name. She rolled her eyes and stood up."Over here dad, geez relax would you?" Dean came running over and stopped dead next to her, dropping the knife and picking her up and hugging her close.
"Don't ever, ever do that again. Mara you can't just get up and go where you want." Mara could feel her father's tears against her cheek and she swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry Dad, I wasn't thinking, I'm sorry." She hugged back and sniffled looking up at Dean when he put her down. Sam ran out of the room and came over to where they were and let out a breath. He didn't say anything, he just looked at his niece, worry all over his face. Dean picked up his knife and wiped it on his boxers and finally looked down at the ground where his daughter had been. He looked at the markings and closed his eyes for a moment.
"Fuck, Sammy we have ghouls. They probably followed us...wait I was alone. Followed me from the gravesite I was in before I went to get Mara. And now we have Mara and I bet she's really appealing to them. And if they hooked a ride on me, god only knows how many people they have been snacking on since then." Sam winced and crouched by the marks on the ground.
"Looks like you got at least two riding on you Dean." Dean swore and Mara looked up at them confused.
"Um..my mom left behind alot of books on the supernatural and I read them all, but what do you mean by hitched a ride on you?" Dean looked over at the girl and chewed on his lip, but before he could answer Sam stood up and started talking.
"A ghoul normally can't leave a graveyard unless he can hitch a ride on someone who had their graveyard on them. Meaning the dirt, some piece of a grave anything. Then the ghoul can follow this person anywhere they go, as long as they still have this whatever it was. And a side note, ghouls will eat anyone like a zombie would, but they love kids." Mara looked over at Dean curious not the least bit afraid.
"So what did you take from the graveyard Dad?" Dean ran a hand through his hair and then shivered from the cool morning air, since he was only in his boxers.
"I collected graveyard dirt to use for something else. I swear Sammy I checked for ghouls I didn't see any trace of them." Sam nodded and started back inside, coffee was greatly needed.
"Yeah I know, they probably started to cover their tracks so they could break out of the cemeteries easier." He called back to them as Dean gave Mara a very fatherly look and she ran inside as he followed.
"Ok so, lets get dressed and head to that diner I saw and get some breakfast and lots of freakin' coffee. We can discuss this more there." Dean said as he pulled the door shut and headed for his bag. Mara grabbed her black backpack and headed to the bathroom.
"After I shower, I don't go anywhere until after I shower." She yawned and shut the door.
Dean looked over at Sam and laughed shortly."Well, I guess we wait." Sam shrugged and pulled on a new tshirt and grabbed his sneakers.
"Guess so, wait until she wants to wear make up and stuff, then you really wait." Dean shook his head as he yanked on his jeans and boots.
"Nah, I won't have to wait. My girl isn't wearing make up until she's like 30." Sam snorted and rolled his eyes as he threw a shirt at Dean.
"Good luck."
Mara walked out of the bathroom ten minutes later to see her father and uncle sitting on the bed, ready to go. She grinned at them and yanked a hoodie on over her long wet hair and an old She-ra t-shirt. "Ok we can go now." She ran out the door to the car and then ran back into the room to see them get off the bed. "What is taking you so long come on I'm hungry!" She ran back to the car and Dean smirked.
"I think she got my stomach."
Sam sighed and stretched as he walked out the door. "God I hope not."
"Mara what are you talking about?" Sam asked, his puppy faces out in full force. Mara just dropped the sweet act and shrugged, she wasn't totally sure of what she just heard.
