Trials and Tribulations
Bo was worried, he had thought everything would be okay when Luke
came home. Oh he knew it was going to take Luke time to recover but
he hadn't expect Luke to shut him out like he had. Two weeks he'd been
home from the hospital, in that time Luke had barely let Bo touch him.
Damn Diane Bensen for what she had done to Luke, to them, well at least
that was one problem that would soon be behind them.
"God please help me, show me how to help Luke through this. I know
Diane hurt him badly but I...Lord you've seen what's been happening, he
won't let me near him. I don't understand why he's pushing me away Lord,
why he's shutting me out. Help me to understand, help me to get Luke
to open up and tell me what's bothering him. Show me the way Lord, show
me how to make Luke see that I'm sorry for ever getting involved with
Diane. How do I apologize for that, for the hell he went through on
my account. How do I get him to forgive me, show me God please.
Amen."
Bo prayed as he knelt on the creek bank unaware of the audience he had.
As Luke watched Bo and heard his prayer for guidance he wasn't sure
what to do, until Bo's final plea. He didn't know why he hadn't seen
it before, God knows he should have seen it coming. He should have
known Bo would think he was to blame for what Diane had done, that he'd
think Luke blamed him too.
"Bo, I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you think for a minute.... Oh
hell, I don't blame you for what that, that...little witch did, how could
I ever blame you for any of this?"
"How could you not? I brought her into our lives in the first place, if
I hadn't let her use me back then..."
"No, Bo you had no way of knowing that she would go crazy like she
did. You thought you were in love and she used that to get what she
wanted. Ya can't help who you love, besides if you hadn't been hurt
by her ya might never have figured out how you felt about me."
Bo sat back, he didn't understand, if Luke didn't blame him then why
was he acting like this? Why keep shutting him out? Trying to keep
control of his emotions, not wanting to upset Luke or make him feel guilty
Bo voiced his confusion.
"Luke...if you don't blame me for what happened to you then why have you
been avoiding me? You've been home for two weeks now and ya barely let
me near you. I know we have to be careful cause you're still healing
but you won't hardly let me even hug you, and I can't remember the last
time I saw you naked. Please Luke tell me what's wrong, please let me
help you love."
Pulling Bo to his feet, Luke wrapped his arms around him, he wasn't
sure what to say but he knew he had to try. Bo didn't deserve this hurt
and God knew he'd never meant to hurt Bo, he'd sooner die.
"Bo I'm not sure how to explain it but I'll try, for you I'll try.
The thing is, the problem is, I didn't want you to see my scars. Didn't
want you to be reminded every time you see me of what she did and...I
guess I was afraid you'd...."
"Luke talk to me, what were you afraid of?"
"That you'd..." Luke began in a small voice, gathering his courage
he began again. "That you'd be disgusted by the way I look now."
Bo pulled back slightly to look at his lover in shock. How could
Luke think that of him, how could he think...
"Luke do you really think that little of me?" Bo asked allowing the hurt
to be heard in his voice. "Do you think I'm so shallow that I won't
want you just cause you've got some scars?"
"No, I seem to be saying this a lot but I'm sorry Bo I didn't mean it
like that. Guess I didn't really think about it, it's acutally more about
me being insecure. I mean what if you decide Diane was right, that you
should be with her, she kept saying it was wrong for us to be together.
I didn't believe her then, but now every time I take a shower or look in
the mirror I see what she did. I hear what she said and somehow my fear
that you'd decide it was her you loved got mixed up with my feeling ugly.
You've always told me how attractive you think I am and well guess I'm
a little vain, cause it sure bothered me that...."
Lifting Luke's face up Bo lowered his head to take his lover's lips
in a gentle kiss. Damn her to hell for getting Luke like this, for bringing
the strongest man he knew to this.
"Luke you are still and always will be the man I love. Yeah I think
you're attractive but it was your soul I fell in love with not your
body. The scars will fade Luke, but this isn't really about the scars
is it? Luke I'm not going to change my mind about us, no matter what
Diane said. You are the one I belong with love, the only one I want to
be with. I am exactly where I want to be, in your arms and in your heart,
that's the only place I'll ever want to be."
"Thank you darlin, I needed that I'm sorry I let her get to me like
that. I should never have let her make me doubt you or our love for
each other. I know we can't do a lot yet but how about we go back to
the house and I'll make it up to you."
Smiling in anticipation Bo took Luke's hand as they started back to
the house. He knew there would still be work to do, from his own
experiences he knew this one talk wouldn't fix everything, but it was
a start. And if he had learned anything from his experiences with Jeff
Miller and Roy Logan it was that the healing might be hard to start but
once begun it couldn't be stopped. Not as long as you had someone who
loved you to stand by you and go through it with you.
Over the course of the next month Luke, with Bo's love and support
worked his way toward a full recovery. Physically he was healing just
fine, his broken ribs and other internal injuries were almost completely
healed. The scars from the burns and cuts were gradually fading thanks
to the generous use of aloe vera and vitamin E oil. The difficult part
was the emotional recovery, it took several more converstaions like that
first one, and plenty of reassurances from Bo but he was getting there.
He thanked God every day for Bo's love, although he was a little surprised
that Bo was able to be as patient as he had been. Luke had always known
that Bo was stronger than a lot of people gave him credit for including
Bo himself. He supposed that was one good thing to come out of this
whole mess, Bo had learned that he could be the strong one when needed.
That he was capable of being there for Luke just as Luke had always been
there for him. Come to think of it there was a second good thing, Luke
thought as he realized he had learned how to let go, that it was okay
to be supported. He knew now he didn't always have to be strong, that
needing and accepting help from Bo or from his family didn't make him
weak, only human. Luke's thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of
the phone.
"Hello, Duke farm, Luke speaking."
"Hello Mr. Duke my name is Roger Clark, I'm the District Attorney in the
Diane Bensen case."
"Yes sir, what can I do for you?"
"Well Mr. Duke I wonder if you could drive to Atlanta tommorrow so
we can discuss the case."
Remembering the last time he had agreed to a meeting with a stranger
in Atlanta Luke asked if he could bring someone with him. After setting
up the meeting Luke dug out the phone book and looked up the number for
the District Attorney's office. Sighing with relief upon learning Roger
Clark did in fact work for them, Luke soon began to worry about why he
wanted to meet.
The next morning Bo and Luke started for Atlanta. Bo was driving,
as tense and jumpy as Luke was there was no way Bo was letting him drive.
Reaching for Luke's hand Bo squeezed it in a reassuring gesture.
"Relax Luke, it'll be okay."
"What if...Bo what if they've decided to drop the charges. She might
have told them about us and they might've decided I deserved it or, they
could believe her about me using you. Maybe he wants me there so they
can charge me with rape."
"Whoa, hold on now Luke. First of all there's no way they can charge
you with rape cause I'd have to file the charge which ain't gonna happen.
Secondly with the doctor's report and both of us testifying they ain't
gonna just take her word for anything. They probably just want to prepare
you for the trial, you know like they do on television."
"Thanks Bo I needed to hear that. You're probably right, it's just
to get ready for the trial."
Arriving at the federal building in Atlanta they made their way to
the District Attorney's office. After a short wait they were shown into
Roger Clark's office, shaking hands and making introductions they took
their seats for the meeting.
"Mr. Duke the reason I asked you here is to discuss a plea deal. Miss
Bensen and her attorney had refused earlier offers but now they're willing
to talk."
"Why are they willing to talk now?" Bo asked.
"The defense attempted to admit into evidence Miss Bensen's contention
that the two of you are engaged in a homesexual relationship. Miss Bensen
claims she was only protecting your cousin from you Mr. Duke and punishing
you for your sinful actions. I argued that as her life was not in any
danger and Bo Duke had not requested her help it would be prejudicial
to introduce such testimony. The judge agreed and as a result the
defense lost their hope that the jury would be so disgusted by you that
they would let go. Given that was their only real hope the defense
approached me yesterday with an offer. We drop the kidnapping and
attempted murder charges, in return Miss Bensen will plead guilty to
felony assault and unlawful imprisonment with a sentence reccomendation
of fifteen to thiry years in a maximum security prison. Before you
say no keep in mind that the defense will make sure that the allegations
Miss Bensen has made will make it into the papers. Believe me once that
happens it won't matter if it's true or not, the papers will crucify
you. The jury will never hear it, but that won't be much comfort when
your lives become a living hell. It's up to you Luke, if you say no
we will proceed to trial and I'll see to it that she is convicted."
"Take it, take the plea."
"Luke no, she deserves to pay for what she did. What he's talking about
ain't enough, she should get life."
"But should we, you heard what he said. Bo I just want it to be over,
by the time she get's out she'll be too broken down to be a threat.
Please try to understand Bo, I just want it over."
"Alright Luke if that's what you want, I just want what's best for you.
Go ahead Mr. Clark make the deal just like Luke wants."
Once on the open road Luke reached for Bo's hand. "Thank you darlin."
Bringing Luke's hand to his lips Bo brushed a quick kiss across the back
of it. "You don't have to thank me love, I meant what I said I just
want what's best for you. If this deal is what you want, if it will
let you move on then I'm for it. I only ever cared about your happiness
Luke, after all you've been to me how could I deny you anything that
will bring you that."
A few days later Diane was transported to the Georgia State Women's
Prison to begin her sentence. Bo and Luke were there to watch as she
was transferred to the prison bus that would take her out of their lives
forever. Luke stood watching until the bus was out of sight, knowing
that now he could truly move on, now that it was finally over.
The End.
