Picking up the Pieces
Epilogue: Picking up the Pieces
Later this day, Horne’s office
Nicole Horne paced her office nervously, waiting for a message from Marek. Normally few things could unsettle the director of AESIR Co-operation, but this time she instinctively knew that something had gone terribly wrong. Not for the first time she wondered if she had risked too much this time. Her office appeared much less comfortable and somehow gloomier since she had ordered her lieutenant to capture Volrath.
The outcome of her second-in-command’s current mission would be of no importance if everything went as planned. If they managed to capture Polito or 452 she would claim credit for this success and if her interference caused the mission to fail she would simply hold Volrath responsible for it. Combined with the various mishaps which had occurred during the last days, she would have enough “proof” to mark her rival as a reckless usurper, who ignored and threatened the Cabal’s interests in his struggle for power.
Horne managed to crack a simile at this part of her grim musings: It would be so much like the last time when she had destroyed another Cabalist who had been far too ambitious. However, these pleasant recollections where soon interrupted by the sound of her mobile phone. A chill ran through her spine while answering it and the feeling that something was amiss increased tenfold.
“You better grab your things and start running!” a raspy voice, which belonged to one of her friends in the Council, said, “You have been found guilty of high treason and conspiracy against the Council. If they find you, you’re dead!”
The former director hung up and immediately walked to her desk, where a safe was hidden within a secret drawer. She opened it and extracted various documents, a gun and 50.000$ in cash. After storing them in an executive case, she left her office, making her way out of the building as fast as possible. Horne knew it would be much too dangerous to use her own car, so she would have to stick to public transportation. She made a silent vow to make Volrath pay for ruining her life, before concentrating on staying alive again.* * * * *
Several hours later; AESIR co-operation
Victory had never felt that good! Volrath had won an abundance of battles in his life, both real ones and mind games, but the destruction of Nicole Horne was his ultimate masterpiece. He had shattered her life, her empire and her dreams with one clean strike, now all left to do was to pick up the pieces. It had been so much easier than he had expected! Marek had been quite cooperative after a few minutes of non-verbal persuasion, providing the information Volrath had needed to bring down the bitch once and for all.
The Council had been furious, not only that Horne had built a private task force; her interference had turned an excellently planned mission into a fiasco. Both 452 and Weir had been able to escape, a severe setback for the plans of the Cabal. Volrath had blamed his former commanding officer for these failures, just for good measure (and because the bitch REALLY had disturbed his operation). It had taken the Council only a few hours to find Horne guilty, striping her of all her power and granting Volrath her position.
As new director of AESIR, it was now his duty to take care of the renegade transgenics, which would be the perfect opportunity to punish 452 for her defiance. The outcome of their last fight still angered the Cabalist; he was determined to make sure that the next encounter with the Terminal City leader would end differently.
Ertai interrupted his contemplation at this point: “Horne is nowhere to be found,” the Psy-Ops said, “No one knows when she left or where she went. Someone must have warned her!”
“I expected that much!” Volrath echoed, “She had many friends in the Council, one of them probably alarmed her. But it’s merely a matter of time until we will find her, at the moment we should concentrate on 452 and her little gang of renegades!”
“One question, Sir,” Ertai replied, pointing to a massive tank in the center in the room, “What exactly is this?”
“The reason why we meet in a lab and not in my office,” the new director replied with a wicked smile, “And the perfect way to capture 452! Come a little bit closer and you will understand!”
Once he stood right in front of the tank, Ertai realized that an inert figure floated inside the turbid liquid. His eyes widened when he recognized who was trapped in the vat.
“He was here all the time,” Volrath stated, “At the moment he is recovering from various improvements we gave him but once he’s fit, he will capture 452 for us!”
“What makes you believe that he will help us?” the other Cabalist inquired, “After all he is her brother!”
“I’m confident that your tremendous mental abilities will be sufficient to control him,” Volrath said mockingly, stressing the word ‘tremendous’, “Come! There is much to be done!”

Midnight, the Space Needle
Max sat on top of the Space Needle, feeling slightly depressed and worried. So many things had happened the last days, making her lift even more complicated and dangerous. The insight that at least part of Manticore still existed, had increased her worries tremendously. Not only that Ames White and a considerable percentage of the population wanted her dead, now she also had to deal with a sinister and ruthless organization which would be delighted to lock her up again.
Apart from these worries, she had also several personal problems: Dr. Shankar had examined the nanites she had brought with her and had found out that they were not fully programmed. Without further programming they could only decimate the virus, so she would have to find Weir again to foil Renfro’s sadistic assassination plan once and for all.
She regretted now to make Logan believe that she had a relationship with Alec. Sure, it had seemed necessary at that time but now she had new hope that she would find a way to get rid of the virus. But even if she managed to do that, she would have to admit that she had lied to him. Knowing Logan, she doubted that he would take this revelation very well; probably she would lose him again, which would be more than she could bear.
Her thoughts were disturbed by a heavy downpour, which managed to soak her within 5 seconds. For a moment she rejoiced in the fantasy that the rain would wash away the corruption of the world, leave a pure and wonderful future behind. Than she reminded herself that she would have to fight for such a future and that she certainly would accept this challenge, not only for her, but for every transgenic out there.
This instant the inert figure in the vat stirred.
The end?
Final Author’s Note
First of all I want to thank you for reading my story; it’s simply great to have a content audience. I hope that I won’t have to fear for my life after finishing with a cliffhanger (although it’s a rather slight one). If you’re wondering whether there will be a sequel, I have both good news and bad news for you (depending on your point of view it could also be good news and good news or bad news and bad news).
I’ll start with the good news: I certainly will write another story, though (here the bad news starts) it won’t be another Dark Angel fic. I know I’ll ruffle a few feathers with this decision and can only hope that you’ll understand my motives. I wrote down almost all ideas I had for Dark Angel, so I don’t have anything left for another story. I’d rather write no story at all than an uninspired and boring sequel (Of course it is possible that there will be one someday; just don’t count on it until my next fic is finished).
My next project will be a Stargate Atlantis fanfiction (I promise to write a better first chapter) taking place in season two and featuring the addicted Ford as well as a new evil race. I hope to meet some of you again, just look for it here on AFF.
Farewell,
Vorador
PS: The first chapter of my new story "Myths of Reality" is up now. If you like Stargate Atlantis look for it in the fitting section.
