I do not own Battlestar Galactica, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Chapter 6
AN: I did do a little research on diseases and vaccines but nothing in-depth so I’m sure that I made some errors that I will correct later.
I have already started researching for this fic. And I have found out something VERY VERY interesting that I didn’t realize before. Thinking back on the mini-movie and series, I’m amaze that I didn’t realize it before (I think it is mentioned by Six but not spelled out). I literally cackled in glee when I found this little tidbit because I knew instantly how I was going to fit it in.
I have several chapters waiting to be beta’d for my other stories so we are getting closer to that goal that I mentioned for the rewriting. Right now, this is to pass the time until my beta can get back to me.
EvilClone: YES! Someone got it. That’s totally what I was thinking when I came up with this little part of the story. I hope you continue to like the story and hopefully more things will be explained as it all comes together. Not in this chapter but maybe the next, I’ll start explaining a little about how the Earthlings got to be where they were found. I think you especially will enjoy the little tidbit I mentioned above, I'll let you know when it comes up.
Aleja21: Sorry to make it like you were in class but I’m happy to keep you at the edge of your seat.
Arthur Hansen: I know that I probably didn’t describe it well enough but the pod isn’t like a membrane bound device. In my head its mostly a metal container, filled with a nutrient rich liquid, topped off with either glass or Plexiglas. In essence, when they drilled, that hole remained. In this chapter I explain a little more about what the pods are made up of so maybe it will be a little more realistic.
If I remember my microbiology correctly, there are several air-borne diseases that don’t need a lot a room in order to get into an area. Also, there are some diseases that a person can be a carrier but not show outward symptoms. Maybe I’m mixing too much together but I will research to see if I can come up with something else. Plus, the environment (at least in my mind) would be warm and moist in the pods and would be feeding grounds for any bacteria or viruses that did make it inside. The immune system of those in this kind of pod may also be lowered due to the long period of inactivity making them more susceptible to whatever was attacking them.
I’m blabbering, lol. My main idea when I wrote this chapter was something the Native Americans experienced when European explorers first came into contact with them.
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the chapter and I wish I could say you would enjoy this one but it’s probably filled with inaccuracies as well. I do hope that you enjoy the story as a whole though. Thanks for reviewing.
KilJoy: I would like to tell you exactly what I meant but I fear that I would give too much away. But I will say that I didn’t really have anything in mind when I wrote the brief scene. Also, this is not a crossover fic as tempting as it may seem.Hopefully, everything will be explained soon.
JonnyG: Don’t worry…everyone will make it out okay.
TopQuark: Thanks!
Lee Adama and Kara Thrace were currently working along with CPO Tyrol and the ship they had transported from the abandoned Cylon base. They still had not been able to find the releasing mechanism for the main hatch. Tyrol had given up in finding the secret mechanism and was now willing to consider alternatives despite not wanting to damage the ship.
As Kara and Galen discussed the possibility of using a blow torch in forcing the ship to reveal its interior, Lee glanced over to the other side of the bay. He watched curiously as Dr. Cottle and Nurse Spencer walked between and around six of the pods.
He had learned that with a stroke of genius from Dr. Baltar, something about using the electrolytes in the liquid to be the delivery system, they had been able to modify the vaccine’s delivery mechanism just as the possibility of opening the pods became critical. The vaccine had been injected into the pods twenty hours ago but Dr. Cottle decided to keep a vigilant watch on his patients until he was assured that the disease had been eradicated.
“Lee.” Kara drew his attention back to their current situation. “Grab a blow torch, were opening this tin can.”
He smiled at Kara’s exuberance. He knew she was eager to explore the interior and see if these humans were really from the Earth that they desperately were trying to find. He walked over to the table that held an array of tools and grabbed the hand held tool and a pair of goggles to protect his eyes from the light generated from the tool.
“DOCTOR!” A scream reverberated through the large room.
Lee, as well as Kara and Galen turned and watched as the Doctor rushed over to pods. Seeing the frantic gestures of the Nurse and the concerned look of the Doctor, Lee rushed over to the other side of the bay.
“What’s going on?” Lee asked, not noticing that Kara and Galen had joined in. Shock replacing the questioning look as he noticed that the figure within the pod was thrashing within its compartment. “Is she waking up?”
“No, seizure. She’s having an allergic reaction to the vaccine. We have to get her out of there, NOW!” Doctor Cottle said.
“Do you know how?” Kara asked.
As the older man glanced frantically at the sides of the pod, he shook his head. “We haven’t been able to yet.”
“Okay, we’ll get it open.” Galen said placing the goggles on and moving to the other side of the pod. Kara and Lee moved forward with their own tools, with Lee moving to the head of the pod and Kara already lighting her torch and beginning.
“Spencer, get me 10cc’s of Phenytoin.” Dr. Cottle yelled at the woman. He watched as the three officers worked quickly along the edges of the pod. The convulsing body within thrashing against the walls more violently.
Galen, with his plasma cutter, had finished the left side of the pod and moved to the opposite side of Lee. He noticed that the metal was thicker at the ends and would take a few more precious minutes before finishing.
Kara finished soon after being careful as she rounded off the edge without allowing the sparks to hit Lee. She removed her goggles and placed her hands against the edge, waiting for the other two to finish so she could push to remove the top. She looked down and was startled at the unseeing gaze of the woman beneath her, fear and pain prevalent as the female gagged around the large tube in her mouth, her body lashing uncontrollable against the metal barrier surrounding her.
“Guys, hurry up.” Kara yelled as she watched the Earthling eyes slowly rolled until only the whites showed and closed.
“DONE!” Lee yelled, throwing the torch and his goggles on to the floor. He placed his hands against the edge much like Kara waiting for Galen’s signal.
“Almost there.” Galen whispered. “Two more inches.”
“Come on, Galen. NOW!” Kara yelled.
At her final word, Galen reached the end. “DONE!”
Kara and Lee began to push, Galen rushed over to beside Kara and also pushed.
Dr. Cottle moved out of the way, with Spencer beside him and the syringe in hand.
“Come on, Come on…PUSH HARDER!” Kara said more to herself than to the two men on either side of her. The three grunted as one they pushed against the heavy mix of thick glass and metal until they were able to push it far enough to the other side to allow gravity to take over.
With a resounding crash, the top of the pod hit the metal floor of the hanger bay. Dr. Cottle quickly walked over it to reach the convulsing body within. “Bring her up!” He ordered, uncapping the syringe.
Lee reached without hesitation into the pod, grimacing slightly at the gelatinous liquid. The viscosity of the liquid made it difficult for him to get a sure hold of the struggling female body but was finally able to grab the woman beneath her arms and drag her partially out of the liquid. He felt Kara reach in next to him, helping him.
“Hold her steady.” Dr. Cottle commanded.
Lee leaned further forward, wrapping his arms around the naked body, his hand grasped the other just below the rib cage. He moved his head to the side to avoid the harsh movements of the head that now jolted back and forth just below his chin. The heat rolling off the body he now held, felt like it could possibly burn him.
Kara grasped the wildly thrashing arm nearest her, holding it down so it wouldn’t hit against the jagged edges of the now opened pod while Galen grasped the ankles. Nurse Spencer grasped the other arm, pulling it completely out of the pod. Grasping the upper arm in a death-like grip so to momentarily decrease the blood flow to the vein, she watched as Dr. Cottle thumped the delicate skin of her inner elbow.
“Hold her.” Dr. Cottle said again as he injected the drug into the Earthling’s vein. After emptying the contents of the syringe, he placed his thumb over the entry point and nodded towards the nurse. She relaxed the harsh grip on the women’s arm but kept it firm.
Several tense moments passed as the group held the stranger while the doctor monitored her pulse and heart rate.
“It’s working.” He said gently. Soon after, the rest of group noticed that the Earthling’s body was beginning to calm. As the body finally began to relax within its confines, everyone except Lee gently relaxed their grips.
Dr. Cottle moved over to where Lee stood. “Let’s get this thing out of her.”
Lee watched in distaste as the doctor firmly grabbed the large tubing sticking out of the woman’s mouth. With a firm grip, Dr. Cottle withdrew it and as it slid slowly out of the lungs and throat of the woman, her natural gag reflexes began, ultimately aiding the removal of the oxygen giving device.
The woman coughed for several moments as she was finally released from the tubing. Dr. Cottle used his stethoscope to listen to the lungs, assuring himself that the woman was breathing on her own and without any difficulty.
“Spencer, bring the gurney. And start setting up an area we can monitor and treat her.” Dr. Cottle said.
“Is she going to be okay?” Lee asked, still holding the unconscious woman.
Dr. Cottle shook his head, not looking at the younger man as he inspected the body for any damage the woman may have sustain during her convulsions against the thick metal of the inner pod. “I don’t know. I’m not sure what side-effects of her long-term suspension may have caused. And her allergic reaction to the vaccination may further th damage or have created new ones.”
Lee looked down at the now calm face of the Earthling. Several strands of wet hair covered most of her face placed there during her struggles. What he could make out were delicate features that were slightly sunken in. He assumed that the cause for the thinness was due to her time spent in the pod, hopefully once she woke she would be able to gain back some of the weight. He wondered what color her eyes would be. For the first time, Lee realized the state of undress of the woman he held above the water line.
“Um, Doc?” Lee asked, averting his eyes.
Before he could continue, Commander Adama and Colonel Tigh arrived.
“What the frak is going on?” Colonel Tigh said without greeting.
