Chapter Six
Chapter Six
Sara unlocked her door and Nick followed her in. She tossed her keys
and purse on the couch and went into the kitchen. She wanted
something to focus her mind on and fixing something to eat would do
it.
Unless Nick started in on the questions, she thought somberly.
She prepared to make tea, bringing down a tea pot and bags.
"Want some tea?" She asked, looking over her shoulder at Nick.
"Sure. Just make it decaf. You need to sleep."
Sara sighed and changed the bags. She poured water into the pot and
set it on the stove. She turned on the stove then brought down two
tea cups. She turned and face Nick, knowing he was dying to ask his
questions.
"Go ahead. Ask," she said with a sigh.
"What did you say to Grissom to cause Greg to behave like that?"
Sara leaned against the counter as she related her conversation with
Grissom. She watched Nick's expression as it went from anger to
sadness. He shook his head as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"I see," he said when she finished. "Grissom's right, Sara. Greg's
feelings for you are stronger than a crush. I think he's in love
with you."
Sara closed her eyes as she felt her face flush. She figured it was
something like that. She took a deep breath and gazed at Nick.
"I don't know what to do," she whispered. "I care about him. I want
to convince him of that, but I don't know how."
Nick pushed himself from the couch and stepped over to her. He stood
before her and wiped a tear from her cheek. She hadn't realized she
was crying.
"You care more than you know," Nick said softly. "You're just too
scared to admit it."
Sara smiled slightly and nodded. He was right. She had to admit it
to herself.
"How about you tell Greg how you feel. He'll believe you."
Sara laughed humorlessly, "He doesn't believe me now. What makes you
think he will tomorrow?"
"Because he loves you, Sara. All he wants is for you to love him in
return."
Sara nodded as she sighed. There was no arguing with logic.
"I'll tell him tomorrow," she said softly. "I hope he can forgive me."
"He will."

Greg slowly opened his eyes and groggily scanned the room. His
blurred vision came into focus as he spotted Sara sitting in a chair
beside him. He froze as he realized where he was.
Hospital, he thought as memories came rushing back.
He turned his attention back to Sara and saw she was asleep.
How long had she been there? Greg thought as he debated on waking
her or not.
The decision was taken out of his hands as Sara stretched and opened
her eyes. She glanced at him and froze. They stared at each other as
Greg thought of what to say. He didn't want to argue with her if
that was why she was here.
He pushed the thought out of his mind. She wasn't here to fight and
he knew it. He was thrilled to see her even as it pained him.
"How are you feeling?" Sara asked as she took his hand in hers.
The touch sent a jolt of electricity through him and he stared into
her eyes, wondering if she felt it as well. He saw the concern
within them and his heart flipped. He squeezed her hand, wanting to
reassure her.
"I'm fine. A little sore," Greg answered. "The drugs here are
wonderful."
Sara smiled and brought his hand to her lips. She kissed him and he
went up in flames. His breathing increased and his heart pounded in
his ears. He wondered if she could hear it.
"I was scared out of my mind," she said, her eyes dark with worry.
"Brass found me in time."
"I don't want to think about what would happen if he hadn't."
"Then don't. Think about now instead."
"Good idea," Sara whispered, squeezing his hand.
She ran her fingers through his hair and he was glad she was here.
He closed his eyes and sighed, leaning into her touch.
"I was wrong," she said suddenly, getting his attention.
"About what?"
"My feelings," she answered softly. "I care about you more than I
realized. I was afraid to admit it."
Greg stared at her, not sure what she was talking about. It then
reached his pain filled mind and his eyes widened.
"I love you," she whispered. "I was afraid of my own feelings. I
tried to push them away, tried to direct them onto someone else."
"Grissom," Greg said, averting his eyes. Even though she admitted
her true feelings, her earlier actions still hurt.
"Even he knew what I really felt. I didn't want to hear it, though.
I'm sorry."
Greg shook his head, glancing back at her. He saw the guilt and the
sorrow in her eyes. He squeezed her hand in reassurance.
"Don't worry about it," he said softly. "You're here now and I
couldn't be happier."
Sara smiled and he returned it. He stared into her eyes and wanted
to drag her on top of him and kiss her senseless. He didn't care he
was in the hospital, all he wanted was her, right now.
The nurse came in then, dumping cold water on the moment. She smiled
when she saw Greg was awake.
"Don't mind me," she said as she went to the other side of the
bed. "Just checking his vitals."
Greg looked back to Sara, who blushed. He had never seen her blush
before and he found it appealing. He reached over to her, ignoring
the pain the movement caused and touched her face. She shivered and
he smiled in delight. The nurse left then and they were alone again.
"Where were we?" He asked, his voice husky.
Sara smiled and his heart skipped a beat. He never wanted her more
than at that moment. If only there was a "Do Not Disturb" sign he
could hang on the doorknob.
"Hold that thought," she said as she ran a hand through his
hair. "You need to rest and get well."
"Spoil sport," he said, chuckling.
He brought face to his and kissed her gently. He then took her hand
and kissed it, watching her as she drew in a breath. He saw her eyes
darken and his own arousal grew. He couldn't wait to get out of here.
"I need to go," she whispered as she pulled her hand from his. "You
should rest."
Greg watched as she left, wishing he could go with her. He sighed and
rested against the pillows. He closed his eyes as thoughts of Sara
followed him to sleep.

Sara entered her apartment and tossed her keys on the end table. She
ran a hand over her face as she sat on the couch. She sighed and
closed her eyes. A sob escaped her before she was able to stop it.
She had kept it in for as long as she could, the relief overwhelming.
Now, the fear caught up with her and it wouldn't be stopped. She
buried her face in her hands and cried.
She cried because she nearly lost him. Almost missed the chance to
tell Greg how she really felt. Nearly missed having a life with him.
The phone rang, causing her to jump. She wiped her eyes and answered
it.
"Sidle," she said, her voice thick.
"It's Grissom. Brass brought in the woman who shot Greg."
Sara slumped against the couch's pillows in relief.
"Good," she said calmly, though she wanted to kill the woman.
"How's Greg?" Grissom asked.
"Better. Everything's better."
Sara unlocked her door and Nick followed her in. She tossed her keys
