Chapter 6
The weeks went by and Sara looked forward to her morning visits from Grissom. They worked together every morning after shift on her therapy and as the weeks progressed she knew she was getting closer to the time when she could really make love to him. He had been so gentle and patient, and no mater how much pleasure he gave her during her therapy, he never expected anything for himself. She came up with a plan to make love to him on her day off. She knew she wasn’t ready for penetration yet, but she had a plan all the same.
Walking back into the lab from a scene Sara saw Grissom talking with Catherine going over some old cases. Grissom looked up and smiled, but she saw something odd in his eyes. “Hey guys. What’s up?” Catherine looked up. “Hi Sara. Not much really. I’m just helping Grissom get information from some old bug cases for his conference. How’s the home invasion going?”
Sara smiled and leaned on the doorway. “The prep might as well have put a sign on the wall saying ‘I did it.’ Vartan picked him up earlier and he sang like a bird. What conference, Griss?”
Grissom grimaced. “It seems that a college of mine had to back out of a forensics seminar in Chicago and volunteered me to cover for him at the last minute. So I’m trying to update some of my seminar slides with some more interesting photos from old cases. Then run by the house and grab my bag to catch a flight at 9.” He walked over to her and took her hand. “I’m sorry Sara. I wanted to tell you sooner, but when I got the call you were out in the field.”
Sara smiled and gave his hand a squeeze. “Hey it’s ok. You’re one of the top guys and you’re available to do these things more often now. Of course they’ll call you. This is one of the reasons you stepped down, to go do these conferences.”
Grissom smiled and reached up tucking her hair behind her ear. “I know, but I’ve been enjoying spending time with you. Now I have to take off to Chicago for a week and you have a trial starting in a couple of days, so I can’t even take you with me.”
Sara was so touched by the thought she felt tears well in her eyes. “You wanted to take me with you?” Grissom smiled. “Of course I did. When I came in and you were at a scene, I got Catherine to give me a hand with these photos and so I could talk to her about getting you the time if you wanted to go.”
“Well maybe we can go together another time. I’m sure you’ll get asked to more conferences and they can’t all be during trial dates.”
Grissom gave her a quick kiss, grabbed a folder with the photos he needed and he was on his way. “I’ll call you later.”
Catherine smiled and shook her head. “You know I still can’t believe that’s the same Grissom I worked with for all those years. He’s smiling, laughing, touching you, kissing you, and he’s doing it in public. It’s just strange.”
Sara chuckled. “Yeah it’s taking some getting used to. But it’s nice. I mean after years of him pulling me in and pushing me away, he’s finally consistent.”
Catherine grinned, “Yeah but on this end it’s a little like walking in on your parents having sex.”

Grissom watched Vegas disappear beneath him as his plane soared toward Chicago. He loved lecturing at conferences, but this was the first time he had been away from Sara since they admitted their feelings to each other. The woman in the seat beside him noticed his longing look. “It’s always a shame to leave when you’re having a good time isn’t it?” She patted his hand at his smirk. “Honey there’s nothing there you can’t find anywhere else.” He looked at her and gave her a little smile. “You’re wrong. There is something there that is one of a kind. The woman I love is there.”
He spent the week juggling his time between the lectures he was giving and catching up with some old colleges. He couldn’t wait to get back to Las Vegas and Sara, but after his final lecture he was persuaded to have dinner with a couple of fellow CSI supervisors: Horatio Caine from Miami and Mac Taylor from New York. He quickly discovered that Caine could be as persistent as Catherine when he got an idea in his head. “Now Dr. Grissom, you wouldn’t deny us the chance to pick your brain would you? I mean you are the supervisor of the shift with the highest solve rate, at the best lab in the country.”
“That’s former supervisor. I resigned a couple of months ago.”
Caine pushed his sunglasses back on his nose and set his hand on his hips as he regarded Grissom carefully. “Do you think a couple of months out of the lab will taint your advice? Or are you just unwilling to lend an ear to a couple of cops? See Mac that’s the problem with scientists in forensics. They don’t think cops can do the job and get all high and mighty on us.”
Grissom was stunned. “Look I don’t even know you, but from the report Catherine Willows gave me when she returned from Miami, I have no doubt you’re quite good at your job and at running your lab. I’m just anxious to get back home.”
Mac slapped Caine’s shoulder. “Caine, come one man. You know Grissom’s rep better than anyone. Brilliant, driven, a loner. The man is a complete work junkie. If he’s anxious to get back, then he’s anxious to get back.”
Caine peered over his sunglasses at his New York friend. “Yes but he resigned. So what would be so pressing that he couldn’t have dinner with us?” Mac and Caine looked at each other and then at Grissom, and Mac grinned. “So what’s her name? Come on Grissom you can tell us. We’ll find out anyway. We do know how to find evidence.”
Grissom agreed to dinner with the men, but only if they left his personal life alone. They agreed and the three men spent the rest of the afternoon together. They were walking back to their hotel when something caught Grissom’s eye. He stopped and took a closer look. Caine and Taylor stopped, saw what Grissom was looking at, and smiled. Mac put his hand on Grissom’s shoulder as they said good-bye to the older man. “If you’re ever in New York or Miami, look us up. Whoever she is, she’s a lucky woman Grissom.”
An hour later Grissom left “dimend SCAASI” and headed for his hotel and the airport. He had no idea what had possessed him. His purchases were impulsive, extravagant, and terribly presumptuous, but he didn’t care. He knew what he wanted for the first time in his life, and he wouldn’t stop until he had her.
