Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Sofia had decided to stay for the time being. Her decision
caused Grissom to have mixed emotions. On the one account,
he was happy to not be losing a good CSI. Not that he didn't
enjoy training new people it was just that everyone was still
adjusting to the staff changes as they were. Grissom's apprehensions
regarding Sofia's decision were personal. She had come on to him
and he had told Sara about it. He couldn't be certain how this
knowledge was going to affect the womens' working relationship.
He could only hope for the best.
Since leaving Sara's apartment two days ago, Grissom had tried
not to think about where he and Sara were in their quasi-relationship.
Things had gotten heated up and he had said some things that he
wouldn't even try to take back if he could. When he had told
Sara that he was tired of fighting this thing between them he was
being completely honest. But Grissom did still have his reservations.
It wasn't as if he viewed himself as some sort of pervert, but he
knew he enjoyed sex outside of the mainstream every now and then.
He didn't doubt that Sara would be willing to try almost anything for
him it was just that he was reluctant to ask her. And it wasn't as
if he couldn't have so-called normal sex anyway. If that were
all she could ever offer that would be fine. Grissom's dilema lay
in discussing this with Sara. He didn't know how to even begin the
conversation.
Grissom was saved from having to mull over his problem by a knock
on his office door. He looked up to see Greg standing in the
doorway. "Grissom, you got a minute?" The young CSI asked.
"Sure, Greg, have a seat." Grissom noticed that Greg seemed a
little nervous. "Is something troubling you?"
"No, I uh just need to get your signature."
"For what?" Grissom asked.
"Well, Sara and I are swapping days off this week and she said
you would need to initial any schedule changes."
"That's right. What are the changes?"
"I need Friday night off," Greg said as he handed Grissom the schedule.
"You didn't put an advance notice in or I would have scheduled
you off for Friday, Greg."
"Yes, Sir, It's just that something has arisen, I mean come up,
what I mean to say is something unexpected has happened."
"Care to elaborate?" Grissom was getting annoyed.
"I have a date."
"A date, congrats," Grissom was overjoyed. If Greg had a date and
he wanted to trade nights with Sara that definitely meant that Sara
was not said date. This was a good thing. Maybe Greg was finally
getting over his infatuation. Grissom picked up a pen from his desk
and scribbled his initials onto the document. He couldn't help but notice
that under the new changes that he and Sara would both have Tuesday off.
It would be there first day off together since the lab explosion.
Grissom had deliberately not scheduled him and Sara off on the same days
since she had asked him to dinner. He knew it had been a childish thing to
do and was just short of an abuse of power. But hell, he didn't want to
risk her asking him out again. He knew that as an investigator she must
have realized what he had done but she had never said a word to him about it.
He handed the paper back to Greg, "Here you go, and Greg, have a good time,"
Grissom added befor turning his attention to the mounting paperwork that
had accumulated on his desk.
As Greg headed for the breakroom he wondered what in the hell was up
with Grissom. He couldn't remember the old guy being so pleasant. Surely
he wasn't that happy that he had a date. Grissom rarely showed any interest
in any of their personal lives. Maybe he really was seeing Sofia. Greg didn't
have the nerve to ask him about it especially after the look he shot Greg when
he had left the diner with his crotch soaking wet. And he certainly didn't want
to bring the subject up to Sara. Greg entered the breakroom to find Sofia pouring
a cup of coffee. "Hey," he greeted.
"Hey yourself," Sofia's accented voice answerd back.
"Is that stuff fresh?"
"Yeah, I just put in on actually. Would you like me to pour you a cup?"
"Nah, I can get it but thanks for asking." Greg wondered why everyone was in such
a good mood. 'Must be spring,' he thought. First, Sara had agreed to give up her
Friday night off, then Grissom didn't bitch about changing the schedule, and now,
Sofia was offering to fix his coffee. Greg really liked spring.
"Hey, Greggo, pour me a cup of that will ya?" Sara asked as she came into the breakroom.
She tossed down a notepad and plopped down into the seat across from the one Sofia had
selected. Greg brought Sara her coffee and took a seat at the end of the table. He didn't
usually like to sit directly across the table from Grissom but he new that the bugman
was in a good mood tonight so he thought he'd chance it. "Greg, did you forget my sugar?"
Sara asked.
"Here, I'll give you some sugar," Grissom said as he entered the breakroom.
Sara blushed as Grissom crossed the room to grab a couple of the white packets
of sugar. He handed them to Sara and took his seat at the head of the table.
He noticed her red checks but looked at her innocently as he began handing out assignments.
"Sara, you have a db at the Stratosphere, try to stay off the coasters."
"That's your diversion," she sassed.
"Oh yeah, it is, isn't it. Would you like to be supervisor tonight? I'll gladly take
you case."
"No, Grissom eat your heart out. I am going to the top of the world and you get to be
stuck here all night." Sara gave Grissom a big grin which only served to remind him that
he really wished he wasn't a supervisor. Continuing on with assignments Grissom turned to
Greg and Sofia and said, "You two will be at the Mirage, looks like a suicide, but be thorough."
As Grissom finished handing out assignments, everyone began to gather their things.
"I'm gonna grab my jacket from the locker room, Sofia, I'll meet you outside." Greg
informed his senior CSI.
"Okay, but don't take all day," she said.
Their conversation continued until they had reached a fork in the hallway. Sara saw them as
she watched them through the glass windows. Greg veered left as Sofia went right. Sara was
amused at Greg's lightheartedness. She was truly happy he had found a girl he
liked tht wasn't her. She hoped it worked out for him.
"Sara," Grissom's voice brought Sara out of her thoughts.
"Yes?" She questioned.
"I'd like to see you in my office when you get time tonight."
"Sure," she answered. She could have sworn she saw a twinkle in his eye.
