Fear

Thank you everyone again for the feedback you've offered on my story "Enough!" I've made the decision to end this story and begin another as I feel this one has run it's course and I have lots of other ideas for some good GSR. The chapter following this one will be our Epilogue... This chapter is a bit sad with some graphic content.

Chapter 6: Fear

6 weeks later....

Sara Sidle sat hunkered over a piece of evidence in one of the lab's examining rooms. While the unidentified object already had a sample sent to trace, Sara was convinced that if she stared at it long enough it would grow a mouth and start spewing out it's life's story. She let out a sigh. Yep it's official... I'm losing it.

"Sara?"

"JESUS!" Sara shrieked. She jumped a foot and a half and turned towards Grissom with a hand held to her heart. Grissom looked like he was trying very hard not to laugh.

"It's true Sara that a lot of people in this lab look up to me but... I hardly think that makes me the Son of God." He chuckled. Sara rolled her eyes and turned back to the unidentified bit of fluff.

"Ha ha." She responded dryly. Grissom came up behind her and looked over her shoulder at the bit of evidence.

"What in the world is that?" He asked. Sara shrugged.

"Dunno... as soon as it starts speaking English I'll make sure I let you know." She smirked as she distinctly heard Grissom mumble "smart ass" under his breath. She thought about telling him where to shove it but decided against it. Instead she responded, "Trace hasn't identified it yet. Did you need something?" He shrugged his shoulders.

"Not really." He said. Sara glanced around quickly to see if anyone was walking by. Seeing the coast was clear, she leaned over and planted a quick kiss on his lips.

"Then get back to work." She winked. He smiled at her and took his leave of the evidence room.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sara slammed her locker shut in disgust. It was a good thing she kept a change of clothes in her locker because her "monthly visitor" decided to make a surprise attack in the middle of shift. "Sometimes it really sucks to be a woman," she grumbled to herself.

"Sucks to be a woman huh?" Catherine said suddenly as she walked into the locker room. "What did Griss do to you?" Catherine asked with a smirk. Sara rolled her eyes at Catherine's dramatics.

"Nothing... damn period surprised me is all." Sara said leaning against her locker.

"Surprised you? Geez mine's like clockwork how did it surprise you?"

"Simple... mine's not like clockwork. Never has been." Sara paused and turned to Catherine. "I can't believe I just had this conversation with you." Catherine laughed at Sara.

"Bonding at last huh Sara?" Catherine teased. Sara shuddered.

"Ick... not like that we're not." She walked past Catherine to leave the locker room.

"Uhhh... Sara? I think you missed some..." Sara looked down at herself. Sure enough her khaki pants already showed blood. As she looked at herself she realized with growing horror that the blood wasn't stopping. Her pants were already becoming soaked with blood. A lot of blood. Sara's eyes opened wide in shock.

"That's not possible... I just went to the bathroom and changed and... " She shook her head, starting to feel slightly dizzy. "Get Grissom...." Catherine noticed the slight sway in Sara's body and stood instantly to help her.

"Sit down Sara... what's wrong?" Sara shook her head as she sat down. She looked terrified.

"I don't know...please... get Grissom." Catherine nodded.

"OK honey just try and stay calm..." Catherine sprinted out of the locker room and down the hallway to find Grissom. She found him in the hallway walking towards his office. "Grissom!" He whirled around in surprise at the frantic call of his name. The look on Catherine's face as she ran towards him made his blood run cold. Sara.

"What is it Catherine?"

"It's Sara----"

"---Where is she?" He cut her off.

"She's in the locker room. Grissom I don't know what's wrong. There's a lot of blood." Dropping his clipboard, Grissom sprinted down the halls as fast as his legs would carry him. He managed to plow straight into a mail cart and send both the mail and the mail clerk sailing to the floor but he continued running until he reached Sara. Catherine followed straight behind him already on her cell phone with 911. Grissom knelt down in front of Sara, shocked at the sight of blood covering the inside of her pant legs. He reached up and cupped her face between his hands.

"Sara what's wrong?" Sara blinked, as if she just noticed Grissom was in the room. Instantly she began to cry.

"I don't know. There's... there's a lot of blood." Grissom took Sara into his arms and held her as she sobbed. He held her like that until the paramedics arrived. Grissom allowed himself to be shoved aside as she was hauled onto a stretcher and carted out of the building. Grissom stood in the locker room in shock, Sara's blood covering the front of his shirt from where he held her. Catherine tapped him on the shoulder.

"Come on... they're taking her to Desert Palms. I'll drive." Grissom could only nod as Catherine took his hand and led him out of the building.

---------------------------------------------

"Where is she?" Grissom said frantically to the front desk at the Desert Palms.

"I'm sorry sir, who are you looking for?" The nurse asked politely.

"Sara Sidle... she was brought in just a few minutes ago." Grissom said quickly.

"What for?" The nurse asked. Grissom snapped.

"I don't know what the hell for that's why she was brought to the hospital!" The nurse didn't even blanch at the comment.

"Let me look Mr?"

"Grissom. Gil Grissom."

"Ah yes, Sara Sidle. The doctor is with her right now, sir. What is your relation to Miss Sidle?"

"I'm whatever the hell I need to be so that I can see her." Grissom responded flatly. The nurse raised an eyebrow.

"Please sir, have a seat. The doctor will let you know when you can see her. Right now you need to let him examine her so we can help Miss Sidle."

"Damn it." Grissom swore as he ran his hands threw his salt and pepper curls. Catherine lead him away from the reception desk with a quick thanks to the nurse behind it. She coaxed him into a chair and took one of his hands in her own.

"They'll find out what's wrong Gil... you've got to calm down." Closing his eyes in an attempt to calm himself, Grissom nodded.

"I know... I know... damn it I feel so helpless." He said weakly.

"I know you do Gil...she's going to be OK."

It's seemed like an eternity before the doctor came into the waiting room.

"Mr. Grissom?" Grissom shot to his feet and walked to the doctor.

"Is Sara OK?" The doctor smiled reassuringly.

"Miss Sidle is going to be just fine Mr. Grissom. You are her husband?" Without thinking much of it, Grissom nodded. The doctor continued. "Well Mr. Grissom your wife is going to be just fine. Unfortunately she did lose the baby." Grissom's breath exploded violently from his chest.

"Baby?" He said dumbly. The doctor frowned slightly.

"You did not know your wife was pregnant?" Grissom felt like the world was spinning out of control around him.

"N-n-no." The doctor nodded his understanding.

"She was about 5 and a half weeks along from what we can tell. It's not uncommon for us to see that amount of blood loss with a miscarriage. I am sorry about your loss Mr. Grissom. Your wife however is going to be just fine. She's been asking for you." Surprised he had enough brain cells left to remember his manners, Grissom thanked the doctor and shook his hand.

"Room 435."

"Thank you Doctor."

-----------------------------------------------------------

He could tell that Sara had been crying when he knocked quietly on her open door. He walked in and sat down in the chair next to her bed taking her hands between his own.

"I didn't know Gil." Sara said softly. Grissom closed his eyes, nodding.

"I know honey. I'm so sorry." He responded squeezing her hands. Sara sniffed and felt a single tear fall down her face.

"The Doctor says it was a random chromosomal abnormality. He doesn't think it will affect my ability to have children in the future but there's no way to be sure right now. There was just... just something wrong with this one." She sniffed again. "I didn't think I would ever even have kids."

"Do you want to?" Grissom asked quietly.

"Do you?" Sara countered. Grissom smiled slightly.

"I asked you first." Sara couldn't help but smile back a little.

"I... I don't know Gil." She said. He squeezed her hands again.

"Neither do I. And that's OK. We don't have to make that decision right now." Sara snorted in response.

"You say that like we're already married." Grissom blushed at her comment.

"Well uhh... this isn't quite what I pictured but... I was planning to give you this tonight." He released her hands and pulled a small rectangular box out of his coat pocket. Sara gasped and put a hand to her mouth. "I know it's only been six weeks but... I think we both know we knew this was meant to be long before that. Sara...will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" She burst out into tears and threw her arms around his neck.

"Yes yes yes yes oh God yes...." She sobbed into his ear as she hugged him. Laughing, Grissom pulled back and prompted her to hold out her hand. He slid the diamond engagement ring onto her hand. He smirked.

"Perfect fit." Then he added, "I had Catherine sneak a look at your rings in your locker to find out the size." He winked.

"I lied before." She said suddenly. Grissom's smile faded.

"About what?"

"When I said I didn't know if I wanted to have kids."

"Oh... and?"

"I want to have your babies Gil. I want to have lots of babies!" She blurted out. Grissom laughed and kissed her soundly.

"It's OK honey... I lied too. What do you think... 5 kids? 6?" He asked. Sara's eyes bugged out of her head.

"SIX?" She smacked him playfully on the top of the head. "Only if I'm having the first couple and you're birthing the rest!" Grissom smiled at her.

"Deal."
