ch 6

Grissom stared at the computer screen, did I do too much? I scared her away. The computer screen blinked, an incoming message. It was from Sara. His eyes perked up as her read the letter.

Grissom,

Just because I’m spending time with Nick doesn’t mean that you and I can’t start the healing process and renew our friendship. I miss you.

Sara

He went to work on responding to her. He didn’t want to be too blunt, but he didn’t want to be too vague either. You need to apologize. You need to not reveal too much, but you need to show you have feelings. He started typing.

Sara,

I'm sorry about what I said; these baby steps are harder than I had anticipated.
I miss you too.

Grissom

He reread it a couple of times and he clicked send. He headed home before his appointment with Dr. Duluth.

“So Grissom, how have things been?”

“All right.”

“Have your habits changed?”

“Not really. But I feel better about myself.”

“I guess that helps.”

“Yes it does. It is refreshing to me.”

“So, tell me, how are things going with you. We will start slow.”

Grissom nodded, “Thanks.”

“So how have the visits to the brothel been?”

“The same. They are still a daily occurrence, but I feel better about myself.”

“Good.” She was nodding.

“What about the masturbation? Has it changed?”

“A bit…maybe.”

“Care to explain.”

“Well since I started talking to Sara, things have seemed to gotten better. It doesn’t happen as much at work anymore.”

“That is good. It’s progress.”

“I guess.”

“Grissom, you need to learn to recognize that you are making progress.”

“All right. I will try.”

“So how are things going with Sara?”

“We are emailing.” Just because I’m spending time with Nick doesn’t mean that you and I can’t start the healing process and renew our friendship. I miss you. His thoughts shot back. “I think I may be doing more harm than good.”

“Why is that?”

“Well the last email she told me it was short because she was having breakfast with Nicky.”

“Who is Nicky?”

“Another co-worker.”

“What did you think?”

“I assumed she moved on with him.”

“And she didn’t?”

“No. They are just friends. I’m just insecure.”

“Did she say anything else?”

“She said she misses me.”

“How did that make you feel?”

“Great. I miss her too.”

“Did you explain yourself to her?”

“Yes, I told her that these baby steps are harder than expected.”

“Is that how you feel?”

“Yes. This isn’t easy.”

“It’s great you are realizing this. Is there anything else you want to discuss?”

“The meeting, can we discuss that?”

“Sure. What do you want to talk about?”

“I didn’t realize that there were so many people.” He paused. “Important people.”

“I told you that you weren’t alone.”

“I didn’t realize that you once had the same problem.”

“I know how hard it is for you. I have been there before.”

“Was it hard for you to beat?”

“Yes. Personally I think that this is harder than any alcohol or drug could be.”

“They don’t offer a detox.” He laughed lightly.

“I know, they should to slowly wean people off the sex and introduce them to a healthy relationship.”

“Do you have a healthy relationship now?”

“Yes. My husband was there for me through thick and thin. My first husband left me and I snapped. Marvin is amazing. I wouldn’t trade him for anything, but enough about me.”

“So a normal relationship is possible for me?”

“I’m sure it is. I’m almost certain your Sara is a s special as my Marvin.”

“I’m sure she is, I wouldn’t trade her for anything either.”

“So, do you have anymore questions?

“No.”

“Same time next week?”

He nodded. “I’ll see you Wednesday night.”

“You are coming again?”

“Yes.”

“All right see you there.”

Grissom drove home and went to bed. Nothing had changed. He got up and went to the whorehouse before he went to work. He had his usual and left to go home and shower before work. Some days he felt like he was doing little more than ordering a cup of coffee.

He stared at the computer as it booted up. He prayed he had an email from Sara. His wishes were answered when the New Message blinked.

Grissom,

What do you say we use these emails as a first step to communicating again? I’ve got a question about ladybugs. They have a longer life span, don’t they? Or am I thinking of something else?

Sara

He got giddy as he began to write his response to Sara. So many things were going through his head. They were finally talking after so many months of him running away from her. This was getting better. She wanted to discuss bugs; it was an easy subject for him to talk about. He figured she had done that on purpose.

Sara,

I think that is a great idea. Ladybugs do have a longer life span; they are special, just like you.

Grissom

He read over the letter for what felt like hours and then he took one big breath and clicked on send. Baby steps.
