Chapter 6

Sara stood on Grissom’s doorstep. Matthew opened the door and gave her a face splinting grin.

“Sara right?” He waved the leggy brunette into the home. “I don’t think we have officially met. I’m Matthew, Gil’s brother.”

Sara gave him a bright smile. “Pleased to meet you. I work with or for Gil.”

The steady voice came from the marble counter that separated his kitchen from his living area. “She works with me.” He gave Sara one of his rare heart stopping smiles. He took the folder she held in front of her. They had settled back into an easy friendship since their evening together. She never pressed him. She never asked why it wouldn’t work out. She understood him like no one else did.

“You want a glass of wine?” Grissom asked as he looked over her clothing. She was elegantly turned in a jade colored dress made of something satin and Asian looking. A spilt along one side of her leg reveled a well muscled long leg. Grissom tried not to think of her wearing that dress for someone else. He knew they had made the right decision, that didn’t mean it wasn’t hard for him to see her. Still it was better to see than to not see her.

Matthew watched them, flashes of memory circling before his eyes, the picture in his brother’s bedroom, the way his voice sounded when a certain someone called from work. He had barely looked at other women the two times they had visited The Spot. He had figured his brother for what he had seen many of his professors become. When the hostess asked about his wife Matthew had been puzzled the cool reply that she was fine.

What was it between these two? It was clear that they were not dating. Gil worked more than Matthew did. He read, he listened to music, he did crosswords, he played golf, he hung out with his friends Jim and Catherine.

Matthew thought he was everything that a big brother should be, solid, reliable, fair and steady. He was what their father should have been.

Now Matthew saw something new in his brother’s eyes, raw hungry passion. If they had been alone, he would have had the woman spread across his dining room table.

Damn big brother, I didn’t know you had it in you.

He wondered if Sara knew how he felt.

Are you kidding? A CSI worth her salt could see that look a mile away.

Why weren’t they seeing one another?

He contemplated ways to work it in the conversation.

“No I’ve got to be somewhere to be. I’ll see you tomorrow. It was nice meeting you Matthew. Gil will have to bring you around more.”

Gill followed her out. As she reached door he pulled her into his arms. Her mouth tasted sweet and tangy. The skin on the neck was warm to his touch. “I miss you.”

His hand was inching up back. “I miss you too.” She sucked a breath between her separated front teeth. She had wondered when one of them would break. She had seen them both teetering on the edge, a look too long during a staff meeting, his hand to close to her breast or hip at a crime scene, looking over one another’s shoulders, lips only a kiss away from one another.

“Meet me.”

“When? Where?”

“Tonight at The Spot, our room.”

She pulled from him and looked into his eyes. “I have this thing.”

“When will you be done?”

“No later than nine.”

“So 9:30?”

She smiled wickedly. “I never did get to wear my... you know.”
