Episode 6

Episode 6-Walk Quietly, Listen Carefully

Later that same night, Irina?s mind is whirling. Jumbled thoughts of Jack and Sydney roll through her consciousness. Unable to sleep, she walks barefoot to the kitchen.

A small light illuminates Sasha as he sits nursing a drink. She smiles, happy to have the company, human contact.

He looks up, when she speaks.

?Having trouble sleeping??

He gets up walks over to the fridge opens the freezer compartment and removes a bottle of vodka and a crystal shooter glass. Returning to the table he fills the glass and hands it to her. She drains it in one quick gulp. He re-fills it and takes a seat.

?What are you considering with such intensity at this time of night? Do I know her name?? She chides lightly.

?Mr. Sark.?

?You want to secure his release??

?I could use his special talents with a situation arising in Oslo.?

?Critic

?Not yet. If I do need his services, how long before I can expect him??

She drains the glass again, he re-fill it.

?From the time I make the call, to his arrival at Arlanda; thirty hours.?

Sasha sits down his glass.

?Impressive.? He doesn?t try to hide the awe in his voice.

?We have Jack?s genius to thank for that. ?Project Christmas is successful beyond his wildest imagination,? There is admiration in her voice.

?So he does have a redeeming quality or two??

?One or two.? She teases.

Sash gets up and retrieves a shooter glass for himself; He returns and fills both glasses.

?I?d like to leave Sark in custody for a few more weeks. He is overly impressed with Arvin and his ?vision?. Not that it really matters, I suppose, but I prefer my pets??

?To operate of their own free-will?? He smirks.

She reaches out and squeezes his cheek.

?Precisely, control should be used lightly.?

Sasha laughs.

?Can you manage?? Her tone is serious.

?Yes.? There is reassuring confidence in his voice.

Jack is hungry, and tired. As soon as he clohis his eyes, she?s there. Taunting him, teasing him and tormenting him with her eyes, her lips and her hands. Maybe getting something to eat will help. He makes his way to the kitchen, but pauses when he hears voices. He listens.

?So that is your Jack?? Sasha keeps his eyes trained on her face.

?I suspect everything went well between you two the last few days? What are your impressions?? She doesn?t bother to mask her genuine curiosity.

?He?s not exactly what I had expected.?

?Oh??

?He?s a bit dull, cold, really. You get the impression he thinks he is King of the Castle; rather than a barely tolerated house guest.? He grins.

Irina throws her head back and her laughter fills the room.

?I think he?d prefer analytical to dull.? She quips.

Sasha shrugs, and takes another drink.

?I just would have thought you?d pick someone a little more refined. Does he own a sense of humor??

?I didn?t pick him Sasha, the KGB did.?

?And now?? He asks pointedly.

?Now?? she sighs.

?Twenty years has not changed that for me. It would have been easier if it had. Now, he is the only one. ?

She takes another drink and re-fills the glass herself.

?In some cosmic joke, that man is the one that makes me complete.?

?It?s funny seeing you this way." He can't keep the delight from his voice.

?What way??

?Panting after Special-Agent man.?

?I?m not panting? She says with marked irritation.

Okay, at least not visibly.

?Watch your mouth.?

The glint of amusement in his eye sharpens.

?So have you ed hed him yet??

She drains her drink, re-fills and drains it again, before regaining her composure.

?Don?t be crude.? The anger is conspicuously absent in her tone.

He laughs.

?So you have. And??

?And it is none of your god-damned business.? She hadn?t meant to yell.

Sasha settles back, putting a little more distance between them.

?He speaks your name as if he hates you.?

Another drink. ?He does hate me.?

?Doesn?t that bother you??

?It makes him more of a challenge.? The weak smile doesn?t make it to her eyes.

?I don?t know why you waste your time, he isn?t worthy. There are men out there who would happily walk to their death for you.?

?Little comfort in that Sasha. I have no use for a dead man.?

?He?ll betray you.?

?Yes, he will. It is my job to delay that moment for as long as possible. Don?t think badly of him for that. For now, all that is important is that we find Sydney. After that, well, I can take care of myself.?

Sasha checks his watch.

?I?m going to go now.?

?At this hour??

He stands up and zips his jacket.

?Oslo.?

She nods, walks over to him, takes his face in her hands and kisses his forehead. He embraces her for a minute.

?You and Jack leave for Cairo tomorrow? Be careful, I don?t trust him.?

?I?ll be fine.? She is touched by his concern.

?If he hurts you, I will kill him.? The tone of his voice gives her a chill.

She grabs him by the collar and speaks sharply.

?You are never to hurt Jack. No matter what; is that clear??

He nods grudgingly.

?Now go, be safe and make sure you wear your helmet.?

A boy-ish grin appears.

?You sound like my mama.? He speaks in mock exasperation.

?I?ll let her know you send your love.?

?Please do. Goodnight.?

?Sasha don?t forget these.? She hands him his glasses.

He slipsm onm on and leaves.

Forgetting his hunger Jack returns to his room. His mind is humming.

[I] That had been informative. Sasha was suddenly looming much larger in Jack?s game plan. How odd that she would confide so freely in one so young. Was he Sydney?s replacement? Maybe. An Achilles heel? Absolutely. A weakness, for him to exploit later.

So she expected him to betray her. Had he slipped? Probably not, but she was a realist and she knew him. She was willing to gamble for Sydney. Well, score one, for Sydney?s mother.

And yes, for the record, he did have a sense of humor, thank you very much.

She had been enraged when the kid has threatened him. And what had she meant, when she?d said??No matter what?? Did she think he planned to kill her? No, but maybe she did think he would succeed in returning her to her cell. Interesting.

Cosmic joke indeed. Did she believe those words she had spewed forth? Could they be some version of truth? Oh what a twisted mind. He'd have to start feeding that delusion a little more actively. Time to shorten the leash.
