Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown, Wash. D.C.
January 5, 2003
2:00pm.

Mac is cleaning her bathroom when the phone rings.

“Hello,” Mac asks as she puts the toilet lid down to sit.

“Ma’am it’s Harriet, um I was wondering. Have you and Harm picked out a date or come up with any ideas yet?”

“No Harriet, not yet. I’m cleaning my bathroom and Harm’s out getting lunch, but I think we should meet up tomorrow for lunch. As much as I love the dress I have that I would have married Mic in, I don’t know if I could marry Harm in that dress.”

“I understand. I’ll pick up the latest issues of the bridal magazines and we’ll go over each one at a time.”

“Sounds fun. I’ll see about making some plans. See you tomorrow at work.”

“Hey beautiful, who was that,” Harm asks as he pops his head in.

“Harriet. Listen, I know you asked about a date, could we talk over lunch? I’m starved.”

“Harriet, I still want you to be my Maid of Honor,” says Mac.

“Oh Mac. I’m still honored. Have you come up wany any ideas?”

“Yes, we’re making an announcementer ter tonight at Murphy’s after work.”

“I’d love to help you plan this wedding. I mean I want to make this wedding special.”

“So do I. Now pop out those magazines.”

McMurphy’s Bar

5:00pm.

Mac and Harm arrive at the same time in their separate cars. Harm holds the door open for Mac and they both spot Harriet and Bud,rgisrgis and Bobbi, Tiner and Coates, and A.J. and Meredith in the corner.

“Ok nobody mention the honeymoon pool. I think we’re about to find out the wedding pool results,” says Harriet.

“How do you know,” asks Bud.

“Call it a hunch.”

“Hey, they’re here,” says Bud as they come over to the table.

“Ok so what’s this big announcement,” asks A.J.

“We’ve discussed it and we’ve decided on a date,” says Harm.

“And,” says Sturgis.

“April 16th in 2004.”

“All be damned. Sturgis won,” says A.J.

“Won what,” Harm asks a little shocked, and everyone goes on as if he hasn’t said a word.

“Technically, Webb and Sturgis won,” says Harriet.

“Won what, Harriet,” Mac booms, which gets everyone’s attention.

“Ma’am, we put together a wedding date pool, the proceeds of course going to you. Webb and Sturgis won, being the closest to the actual date,” hiding the fact about the honeymoon pool.

“Webb and Sturgis chose April 15th, tax day,” says Tiner.

“Sorry buddy, had to have a little fun,” says Sturgis.

“I suppose it’s all right if you haven’t bet on where we’re going on our honeymoon,” says Harm, but the look on Sturgis’ face and the others made him cringe.

“Just how many pools do you have going,” asks Mac.

“My guess, unless I am mistaken Tiner, we’ve got your honeymoon until after your first-born,” says A.J.

Mac breaks out laughing until her sides hurt while Harm smiling, turns another shade of red.

“Well, when we’ve picked a honeymoon, we’ll be sure and not tell you until we get back,” kids Harm.

“Come on, let’s dance Flyboy,” says Mac, putting her purse and coat on the sea
“H
“Honey, let’s dance,” says Bud. Harriet gets up and follows Bud.

As they get to the dance floor, Olivia Newton-John & Cliff Richard’s version of Suddenly begins to play.

She walks in, and I'm suddenly a hero,
I'm taken in, my hopes begin to rise
Look at me, can't you tell I'd be so thrilled to see
The message in your eyes
You make it seem I'm so close to my dream
And then suddenly it's all there

Suddenly the ls als are in motion, and I, I'm ready to sail any ocean
Suddenly I don't need the answers
'Cos I, I'm ready to take all my chances with you

“You know, it’s true. I’d sail anywhere with you,” says Mac.

“What about fly?”

“I will as long as you’re not doing the flying.”

“That hurts Mac,” Harm smiles as if wounded.

“I’ll make it up to tour wounded ego later,” Mac whispers in his ear.

“Of course you will Marine, if you want dessert,” Harm broadly smiles.

And how can I feel you're all that matters,
I'd rely on anything you say
I'll take care that no illusions shatter
If you dare to say what you should say
You make it seem I'm so close to my dream
and then suddenly it's all there

“Oh I can’t wait to make you mine, Marine.”

“Are you telling me you want to run to Vegas and get hitched?”

“Though the thought has merit, I think our friends and family would kill us.”

“That reminds me, I have to call Uncle Matt and you’ve got to call your parents about the date.”

“Can’t we just send them invitations?”

Mac play punches Harm’s left arm, “No Navy, we can’t. I haven’t called my Uncle Matt in several months.”

Suddenly the wheels are in motion, and I, I'm ready to sail any ocean
Suddenly I don't need the answers
'cos I, I'm ready to take all my chances with you

Why do I feel so alive when you're near,
there's no way any hurt can get thru
Longing to spend every moment of the day
with you, with you

“I want to spend every moment of the weekend with you,” says Mac.

“Fine by me, as long as I get time off for good behavior so that I can feed you and use the head.”

“It’s a deal.”

Suddenly the wheels are in motion, and I, I'm ready to sail any ocean
Suddenly I don't need the answers
'cos I, I'm ready to take all my chances with you

While their co-workers are dancing, A.J. looks to Sturgis.

“Tell me how in the world you and Webb got so close to the date,” asks A.J.

“I was thinking of tax day because it would be the year after they would have to file jointly and it would be easier for Harm to remember.”

“So who do you think is going to win the honeymoon pool,” asks Bobbi.

“I’d say the Admiral and I have the best odds,” says Sturgis.

“At this point I’m up in the air,” says A.J.

“It’s not too late to put more money into the pool,” says Tiner.

11:00am.

Harriet is checking her email and sorting the messages for delivery when Mac walks up.

“Harriet, could I see you for a moment?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

The two ladies go into Mac’s office and Harriet shuts the door behind her out of habit.

“What can I do for you Mac?”

“The guest list is a little small. I was wondering if you could help me remember anyone I’ve forgotten, f you’re not too busy.”

“Sure. I’d be glad to help. No, I’m not too busy. I just have to deliver some messages and email.”

“Great, then here’s the list. If anyone asks you are doing some researching for me.”

“Should I ask the Commander if there’s anyone he wants on the list?”

“Yeah, but catch him when he’s not busy. Thanks Harriet.”

“Your welcome, I’ll get right on this ma’am.”

Harriet looks at the list on the way back to her desk and then picks up the Commander’s messages.

“Commander, sir, here are your messages and your guest list from Col. MacKenzie.”

“Thanks Harriet.”

“If you need help, I’m available sir.”

Harm takes a once over the list.

“Uh Harriet.”

“Yes sir?”

“Add Jack Keeter, Rear Admiral Tom Boone, and see if you can locate Mac’s Mother. I want to talk her into coming for Mac.”

“Shouldn’t you ask Mac if she wants her there first?”

“Details Harriet. If I tell her now, it will worry her. If I don’t say anything and her mother turns me down then no love lost. If she decides to come then I’ll tell Mac.”

“Whatever you say. I’ll go deliver this to the Colonel.”

As Harriet goes back to her desk a man in a blue jumpsuit with the name Bob sewn on his shirt is there waiting for her with two beautiful roses in two pink glass vases.

“Can I help you?”

“Yeah, I’m here to deliver these to a Sarah MacKenzie and Harriet Roberts.”

“Well, I’m Harriet. I’ll deliver the other one.”

“Ok, sign here.”

Harriet signs for both flowers and then opens her card.

“I can’t wait for Friday, honey. All my love, Bud. Ps. I got a sitter for A.J.,” Harriet read to herself.

Then she takes Mac’s to her office.

“Mac, this just came for you with a card. It’s odd. I got one exactly like it.”

“Who’s yours from?”

“Bud. Is yours from, you know who?”

“Well let me open it first,” Mac says as she slips her letter opener through the envelope. She reads the card and looks at it oddly, “It’s not his handwriting.”

“What’s it say?”

“It’s just a capital W.”

“I think it’s a game.”

“How can you guess?”

“Call it a hunch.”

11:00am.

The same delivery guy shows up with two roses. Same color flower, blue glass vases this time. Harriet carries both vases to Mac’s office and she opens her card first.

“Have I told you lately that I love you? I love you, Bud.”

“Oh how sweet Harriet.”

“Now it’s your turn.”

Mac opens hers and shows Harriet.

“It’s a drawing of a bee.”

“See, I told you it’s a game.”

“A W and a bee? It doesn’t make sense.”

“Wait until tomorrow.”

Once more the roses come, different delivery guy, white glass vases this time. Harriet marches into Mac’s office with both. Harriet still opens hers first as a tradition.

“I’ve bought you something, can you guess? Love, Bud,” Harriet reads to Mac, “I’ve got goose bumps.”

“I can bet. Mine’s a drawing of an eyeball a plus sign and two capital L’s.”

“Ok what do we have so far?”

“W, a bee, an eye, two capital L’s…”

“How about I’ll be W,” Harriet guesses.

“That’s it Harriet. I’ll be W. Let’s wait until tomorrow, but I’m guessing I’ll be getting a capital U next.”
