Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Chloe awoke with a gasp and looked around her searching for anything that she knew and couldn’t find a thing. The dream had gone farther than it ever had before which was making her think maybe this dream, this nightmare was something completely different, but what? She was scared and confused and just wanted to be held in Clark’s protective arms, but she couldn’t. She was on the run with Davis and no one knew where she was. Hell she barely knew where they were right now. From the worry, fear and sleep deprivation she was struggling just to remember her name.
Chloe got up and carried clothes to the little bath in the hotel they were at this time. She took a quick shower and got dressed, but as she brushed her hair out her mind drifted to the dream/vision/whatever it was again.
“…This all had to be a war zone, a war zone from a movie not real life it couldn’t be real life, but as she looked around she saw the Daily Planet’s globe laying not 25 feet away burnt but still in one piece and she knew she wasn’t in the middle of a war zone from a movie but real life, Metropolis after Clark and Doomsday had fought and Doomsday had won over the world’s Superhero sent here just for them. Her worst fear had come to be. The world…she had lost Clark and Davis had fulfilled his dark, evil destiny.
She cried as if her heart had been ripped out and really it had. Clark had been taken from her.
As she held his quickly growing cold body to her she heard someone calling out. She couldn’t hear what they were saying, but she looked around to see if she could see anyone. She couldn’t, but something in the voice called to her. She didn’t want to leave Clark alone but she knew he would want her to help those she could so she slowly laid Clark down on the ground and walked away in the direction she thought the voice was coming from. She would stop every once in awhile and look under ruble but finding nothing move onward.
Finally as she stepped into an opening where it looked as if a crater had hit then just disappeared she found two people, a little boy maybe 9 or 10 and a young woman watching her approach.
Chloe called out to them as she slowly lowered herself into the crater with them, “Can I help you? Do you need anything?”
The two spoke as one, “You have to save us. You’re the only one that can.”
“What? I can help you get to a hospital, but I can’t save anyone. I’m not a doctor or something.”
“Yes, you can. You’re the light. You’re the strength that will save us all. Our father needs you, the world needs you.”
Once their words came to her from the distance they began to fade like apparitions.”
This is where she was now waking up and the new development to her nightmare was making her think maybe it wasn’t her fears of Clark and Davis facing off that had created the nightmare, that maybe the nightmare was really something else.
She really wanted to research what was going on, but while she was on the run she couldn’t risk it. Plus, the only thing that could really help her was the Fortress or Clark himself and neither of these options were open to her at the moment…or might never be again. She didn’t know. She was at a loss and really needed Clark’s strength. But she couldn’t risk him or Davis. She was being torn from the inside and it was killing her.
Chloe finished getting ready and as she came out of the bathroom ran into the chest of Davis.
“There you are? I was worried.”
“There’s nothing to worry about. I was just getting dressed Davis.”
“Yeah I know, sorry. I packed our stuff so we can head out. So, we’ll eat and then go. You okay with that? ”
“Yeah that’s fine just give me a minute and I’ll be down so we can eat.”
“Okay.”
As soon as Davis was out of ear shot she went to their room and grabbed her things to take down with her so they could just go when they got done eating. She was shutting the door to the room when she heard a female voice behind her so she turned to see who it was.
Chloe was so surprised by the girl’s looks because they matched the girl from her dream’s so much she gasped and stepped back a bit hitting the wall.
The girl smiled kindly and said in a calm voice, “Oh I’m sorry. Did I scare you? I sometimes forget that I’m not the only one here when I’m playing my music sorry again.”
Then she turned cool eyes in the direction Davis had walked and when her eyes came back to Chloe’s they had a cool ferocity to them and her voice had gone from kind, embarrassed to fierce, determined as she said, “It may not be my place but…”
“What?” Chloe replied curious but careful about what might be said.
“That guy your with…he’s dangerous. I’ve seen that look in his eyes before, there’s nothing good there. Watch yourself.”
“Well, um…thank you for the concern but I think I can handle it.”
“Yeah that’s what they all say until it’s taken out of their hands, but if that’s how you want it just remember…”
“What?”
“You’re the only one that can stop him,” the girl said as she entered the room across from Chloe and Davis’ and shut the door.
With the girl’s words and her dream absorbing her she went to eat with Davis.
~She Can’t Save Him by Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood song begins to play for this scene ~
As they ate Chloe kept watching Davis closely. He did have a darkness in his eyes, but it looked like the darkness Clark had once. The darkness of trying to fight your destiny, your past and be yourself while hiding who you are so others don’t fear you. But was that just Chloe projecting what she wanted on what was something else or what wasn’t there at all. Was there more like the girl said, was there really nothing in Davis to save?
“No there had to be or leaving Clark to protect him, to protect the greater good was for nothing. Yes she cared for Davis, yes she cared about what happened to him. But more than anything she cared for and what happened to Clark and what might happen if the world didn’t have him around to save it. She had left everything, everyone she loved to save him and she really hoped it wasn’t for some imagined good in an abyss of nothing but evil and destruction…No that’s not right. There is good in Davis. He was trying to help people by getting rid of criminals and since she had been staying by his side…especially during this runaway there hadn’t been any killings. So maybe he’s fighting it harder with her around…Or maybe he was using her as an excuse not to fight it so hard, as a crutch…hoping if something happens he can use it as proof that he needs her more than Jimmy or Clark ever could because he can’t fight the monster within him by himself,” she thought.
Once they ate they left the hotel and the town they were in and headed for another.
