Chapter Five
Chapter Five: Say (All I Need)
Cappie walked down the path up to the bench. As he looked ahead he saw Casey and Evan.
“What is this?” Cappie asked, “You brought me here to see you and Evan?”
“Not quite,” Casey said. “I brought you here just to see Evan. So sit down. I have something I need to say.”
Evan sat down on the bench next to Evan.
“As the ex-girlfriend of both of you I have one thing to say,” Casey said. “This is possibly the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. But that is not the point. The point is, clearly you both have stuff that you really need to discuss. And in order to make sure you two discuss it I am not leaving until you start talking.”
Evan and Cappie both stared at Casey.
“Now get on with it,” Casey said. “Because this is more drama than I ever needed to have from an ex… or two exes.”
“With all do respect Casey,” Cappie said. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about this with you here. If you leave I promise we’ll talk about it.”
“Right,” Casey said. “Okay fine. I’m going to go for a walk. But I will be back, and if you two aren’t here then I am going to pound on both the Kappa Tau and Omega Chi’s doors and publicly humiliate both of you! Got it?”
Both Evan and Cappie nodded.
“Good,” Casey said as she walked away.
The two sat in silence for a few minutes.
“So I guess we’d better talk,” Cappie said. “If that’s what I had to walk here at one in the morning to do.”
“I didn’t ask her to call you,” Evan said. “I just needed someone to talk to. Someone to tell.”
“Evan,” Cappie said. “I gave you the chance to talk to me the other day remember?”
“I know,” Evan said. “Yet you forget what happened that last day at camp.”
“What are you talking about?” Cappie asked.
***
“Well this is it,” Cappie said.
“I guess so,” Evan sighed.
“Are you going to be okay?” Cappie said, “This is for the best. Why would we sacrifice everything our lives have become so far for each other?”
“Because we’re in love?” Evan suggested.
Cappie kissed Evan and gave a sad smile.
“I’ll see you when we get back,” Cappie said and left the cabin.
***
Cappie looked down into his lap.
“Okay,” he said. “I admit. My reasons for ending it weren’t so great. But—“
“But nothing Cappie,” Evan said. “These last few days you’ve been acting as if I was the reason it ended; as if I was the reason our friendship really ended. You and I both know that our friendship ended because neither of us were really able to suppress our love for each other.”
“And what if you are right?” Cappie said standing up, “What if I do still love you? And what if you still love me? What exactly do you expect to happen Evan? For you and I to be able to start off where we left off those six-seven years ago?”
Evan remained silent as he looked up at Cappie.
“Because it just doesn’t work that way,” Cappie continued. “I have a girlfriend. A girlfriend who the other night told me that she loved me. And you know what I said to her in response. Do you?”
Evan stood up to Cappie’s level.
“No,” Evan said. “No I don’t know what you said to Rebecca.”
“I said,” Cappie was breathing heavily. “I said ‘I love Evan.’ Not Rebecca, Evan! You! And for all I know, I probably never stopped loving you. I just didn’t know what else to do when we were leaving camp. I was afraid okay?”
Evan placed his hands on Cappie’s cheeks and pulled him forward and kissed him.
“Afraid of what?” Evan said.
Cappie fell down onto the bench.
“Afraid of ruining your life,” Cappie said.
Evan sat down.
“You make yourself out to be so perfect,” Cappie said. “And at camp for once you weren’t acting like that just to impress everyone we knew. But I knew that when we went back home and back to school that you would put your front up again. Eventually you would have done what I did. I just did it before it would really hurt us.”
“You really think I would have done that to you?” Evan asked, “That’s the kind of person you thought I was?”
“Evan,” Cappie said. “You can’t honestly say that you really think it would have worked, can you?”
Evan sighed, “I guess not. I just didn’t realize that’s what you thought of me back then.”
“It wasn’t anything personal,” Cappie said. “It’s just the way you were. Always trying to impress people, especially your parents. Could you imagine coming home and telling them you and I were in love?”
“No,” Evan said. “I guess not. I didn’t mean for you to feel like you had to end it so you wouldn’t get hurt. I guess I was being just as selfish back then.”
Cappie tried to smile.
“So what do we do now?” Evan asked, “Do we go back to trying to be friends?”
“You’re so stupid Evan,” Cappie said.
“So you want to give it a shot?” Evan asked.
“Yeah,” Cappie nodded. “But, I don’t know if I can do that to Rebecca.”
“Of course you can,” Casey popped up from behind the bench.
“Casey?” Evan looked to her.
“Sorry,” Casey said. “I had to stick around, you know, to see if you guys were really serious about this whole thing.”
Both raised their eyebrows.
“And,” she continued. “To make sure you guys actually talked about it! And it looks like you did. So I will just be going back to the house now.”
Casey began walking away.
“But,” she said turning around. “My advice for your Rebecca situation is that she had it coming. She has tried to ruin so many people’s lives already. Hers deserves to be ruined every once in a while.”
“Good night Casey,” Cappie and Evan said.
“Right,” Casey turned and walked away.
“So,” Evan said. “What are you going to do about Rebecca?”
“Break up with her,” Cappie said. “She’ll think it’s because I’m afraid of love and I’ll become a scum bag, but that’s nothing new.”
Evan laughed.
“So,” Cappie said folding his hands together. “What now?”
Evan moved his hand over to Cappie’s.
“Well,” Evan said. “We could cozy up. Like we used at camp.”
“Eh,” Cappie cocked his head from side to side. “Where would we do that though? You’re Frat bedroom or mine?”
“Mine,” Evan said. “Yours isn’t as clean as mine. I’m guessing.”
Cappie raised his eyebrow.
“And,” Evan continued. “The Omega Chi’s respect each other’s privacy. So the chances of us getting caught aren’t as high as they would be at Kappa Tau.”
Cappie laughed.
“And because I don’t want your room’s dirt to get all over me,” Evan said.
“Because you are so clean,” Cappie smiled.
“Shut up,” Evan rested his head on Cappie’s shoulder.
“Let’s go,” Cappie said. “We can worry about what’s going to happen tomorrow.”
“You sure you want to do this again?” Evan asked, “Because if you aren’t I’ll understand.”
Cappie kissed Evan.
“I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t,” Cappie said. “And it’s getting cold out here. I think I need you to warm me up.”
Cappie smiled as he pulled Evan up off the bench.
