Chapter 5
AN: Again, this is a future fixer-upper. So please ignore the gross injustices to the English language.
Thanks again to all the reviews.
EvilClone: WOW you must be a night owl like me lol. Please keep your comments coming since it’s nice to see what others see in the story and lets me know if I’m getting what I need to say out correctly.
Darklight: Most of your questions will be answered soon Muwhahaha! Don’t want to give too much away.
That’s a really good point and hadn’t thought that far out yet. Would the Cylons attack Earth since technically the 13th colony had nothing to do with their creation and exile? That would be something for the sequel and if they ever reached Earth.
Whether Six “consciousness” travels from one version to another. Like if Six body were to die she would ‘wake’ up in a Boomer body? As far as I can tell from watching the series, that would be a no. I think the “consciousness” of each model would stay with that version and even if the series decides to show it differently, I think I’ll write it that way for several different reasons. The main one is being in cutting down the confusion. Ug, the thought alone makes me crazy lol. And with the language barrier coming up soon (not in this chapter though) it will be confusing enough keeping track of what is going on lol. The other reason is that I kinda like the idea of Six thinking of her Earthling as her ‘mother’ Muwhahahaha! I hope that answered that last question, if not...please let me know.
Aleja21: lol, I told a friend an idea I had for this story and she freaked (in a good way). So yeah, I do have a couple of things up my sleeve.
Shawn Pickett: Your right. They are different models and I’m sorry about the confusion. What I meant was the human-like models. I do remember from the mini-movie that the guy that “made contact” with the Cylons first was glancing at some specs of the older models (ones seen in the original series). Though I do think when Six revealed that there were twelve models that she meant the human-like models. I’ll have to watch the movie again to be sure. Can you tell me the difference between the Raiders and the Centurions though? Not sure about the difference.
There's some medical terminology and procedure in the chapter. I'm pretty sure that its incorrect so if any of you who read this have more knowledge of these procedures please let me know. I would love to get your input to make this more realistic.
The Commander’s quarters were crowded. Two days had passed and now Adama, Laura as well as Colonel Tigh oversaw the others as they reported their findings.
Lee with Kara standing beside him began. “We administered a…surprise inspection on all military personal onboard the Galactica. It doesn’t look like there are any Cylons aboard. There were about 23 personal not onboard…on leave or performing other duties…we called them back and Helo is in the flight deck to inspect them when they arrive.” Lee reported.
“That’s good news…finally.” Tigh commented.
Adama turned to Dr. Cotter. “Were you able to find anything more?”
“I tried to run CAT on the pods themselves but the liquid that surrounds them doesn’t allow for a proper scan. Besides noting the lowered activity, I can’t determine whether or not any other trauma has occurred. I won’t be able to tell you anymore until we remove them from the pods.”
Before he continued, the speaker overhead announced his name.
“Dr. Cotter, please contact Nurse Spencer…immediately.”
Everyone in the room tensed, recognizing the Nurse on duty in the hanger bay. As one, they exited the room and quickly made their way through the halls to arrive at the hanger bay. Following Dr. Cottle, they approached the 12 pods.
“What’s going on?” Dr. Cottle asked the dark haired woman.
“I just noticed it.” She led the group over to one of the pods. Pointing at the outer arm, the group noticed a reddish patch of skin with lighter spots within on the arm of one of the Earthlings.
“What is it?” Kara asked.
Dr. Cottle ignored the question as he moved to another pod, gazing within and inspecting the body within. His cursing alerted the others that he had found something similar on the body.
“There only on the six pods tested, Doctor.” Nurse Spencer explained.
Laura stopped the Cottle before he could walk past her. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“The six pods we tested, they’ve been infected. Damnit, I should have known.” Dr. Cottle continued to curse as he went over to a tray, grabbing a magnifying glass, he moved back towards the first pod.
“Infected? With what?” Colonel Tigh asked.
“Is this cause for concern, Doctor?” Adama asked.
The Doctor ignored the man as he continued to peer inside the pod.
“DOCTOR!”
Cottle glanced upwards.
“Is the Galactica in danger?” Adama asked.
Dr. Cottle shook his head. “I don’t think so.” He went back to the tray and removed a long thin needle like instrument with a small dial at the end. The others watched as he inserted the needle into the pod and into the liquid within. Reading the gauge, Dr. Cottle reported. “99.8 degrees…it’s increased over a degree from yesterday’s reading.”
“Dr. Cottle, tell us what’s going on?” Laura asked.
Cottle turned to the group waiting impatiently. “Sulebba.”
The group remained quietly, several confused looks returned. President Roslin was the only one that seemed to understand.
“Are you sure?” Laura asked.
“You know what that means?” Colonel Tigh asked.
Laura nodded. “It’s a disease that was prevalent in the early years of the colonies. Usually contracted during childhood. ”
“Should we be worried?” Adama asked again.
“No, a vaccination was found a few years after it was first discovered. We’re all vaccinated against it in our infancy.”
“How did they get sick in the first place? I thought the pods were sealed off.” Lee asked.
“Only the six pods that we drilled into are showing symptoms.” Dr. Cottle responded. “The vaccination only stops the disease from exhibiting symptoms and causing damage. We’re all infected and we all carry the disease but it doesn’t harm us because of the vaccination. By drilling into the pods we exposed the interior to our atmosphere. The disease travels through the air. Damnit, I should have had this area corralled off and set up protocol to avoid this.”
“So just vaccinate them.” Kara said.
“And how would I do that? I need a vein to administer the dosage.” He motioned down to the pods. “That will be a little difficult without removing them from the pods.”
“Wait.” Laura interrupted. “Dr. Baltar said that the liquid itself was administrating the nutrients to the body, through the skin. Is there a way we can do the same with the vaccine?”
Dr. Cottle thought for a moment. “It’s possible. I’ll have to alter the vaccine so that it could be absorbed by the skin and then travel to the bloodstream. It’ll take some time.”
“How much time do we have before it becomes critical?” Lee asked.
“Right now, they are only showing the early stages of Sulebba. The rash and the high fever. We have about 48 hours before the disease becomes irreversible. By than, they’ll start showing signs of Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.” He said.
“Umm, English, Doc.” Kara said.
“It’ll start compromising their kidneys, brain, heart, pancreas, spleen and adrenal glands by affecting the endothelium cells lining these organs and muscles. To a smaller affect, it will damage the liver, lungs, GI tract, gallbladder, skeletal muscles, and pituitary gland.” Dr. Cottle listed with little emotion as if reading from a text book verbatim.
“I only understood about half of that and I know that…that’s bad.” Kara whispered over to Lee.
“Death…occurs after the complete shutdown of these systems. About 72 hours afterwards.” Dr. Cottle said glumly.
“How long will it take to alter the vaccine?” Colonel Tigh questioned.
Dr. Cottle walked over to the nearby phone. “Please have Dr. Baltar page Dr. Cottle immediately.” He said into the device. Hanging up, he turned back to the group. “Well, if I work on it nonstop with the help of Dr. Baltar…about 48 hours. It’ll be close…very close.”
“Whatever you need…just ask. Even if it means we need to remove them from their compartments to administer the vaccine, we’ll do it.” Adama said.

Dr. Gaius Baltar walked quickly through the halls leading to the hanger bay that had been corralled off to unauthorized personal. He had heard the page asking him to page Dr. Cottle. It was a code for those that knew the current situation that there was a problem and the individual needed to arrive at the hanger bay as soon as possible.
“I told you, Gaius. I told you that you were killing them.” The clicking of heels next to him signaled the arrival of Six.
“We don’t know anything yet. You can’t be sure that something is wrong.” Gaius whispered but still getting strange looks from personal he passed.
“Why else would they page the great Dr. Gaius Baltar, if there wasn’t a problem.” The tall blonde responded.
Gaius ignored the woman as he approached the turnoff to the previous abandoned bay. They would know soon enough what had occurred.
