Chapter 5
Doyle was sitting in the VIP lounge nursing a cuppa on Monday morning when Bodie stormed in and threw his first punch. It was a damn good one and sent Doyle backward off his chair. He lay sprawled on the floor rubbing his jaw scowling at Bodie.
“You rotten stinking fucking bastard Doyle. How the hell could you? She’s fucking 18 for Christ sake.” Bodie was mightily pissed off. Doyle tried to get up. Bodie hit him again and Doyle went back over the low sofa. Bodie did not give him another chance to get up. He was seriously out to hurt Doyle and he was succeeding cause Doyle was feeling too guilty to fight back.
“BODIE!” at Cowley’s bellow Bodie turned to look at who it was and Ray scrambled out of his way. Bodie’d landed a few good punches and Doyle knew he’d be sore for a while. “Och man, what the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?” He stormed over to them furious.
“This is personal Sir.” Bodie snarled, still pissed off.
“I've told you before Bodie. Nothing in CI5 is personal now what is going on between you and Doyle?” Cowley glanced over to Doyle and noted the damage Bodie had done in 10 short minutes. Those fists should be classified as dangerous weapons Cowley thought surveying the damage. Doyle had a split lip; blood was running from his nose. One eye was already changing to a lovely shade of purple, by morning he’d probably not be able to see out of it. He had red marks along his jaw where Bodie’s fist had connected and Doyle was holding his ribs so Cowley guessed Bodie had got a few in there also.
“My office now, both of you.” He demanded as Doyle righted a chair and tried to sit down.
“Now what the hell is going on between the two of you? Mr. Cowley demanded as he put a scotch down before each of them.
“It’s personal Sir.” Bodie replied again and Cowley glowered at him.
“If you tell me that one more time Bodie I will sell your body to science, do you understand me? Nod if you do.” Bodie nodded. “Now what is going on?” Cowley sat down behind the desk and waited impatiently.
“It’s about Katie Sir.” Doyle finally admitted “And nothing to do with CI5.”
“Katie might have nothing to do with CI5 but when I find my two best operatives fighting in the VIP lounge like schoolboys it certainly does concern me.” At the moment they felt like schoolboys in front of the head master.
“I hurt Katie inadvertently and Bodie took me to task over it Sir, that’s all.” Doyle was not going to tell Cowley was the fight was really about. Cowley’d probably have a go at him too.
“Well you’d better go and sort it out then hadn’t you!” Both men looked a little startled. “I don’t want to see that young lady hurt. I’ll see you back here at 11:00 tomorrow.” Cowley finished of his drink and shooed them out of his office.
They were driving back to Bodie’s when Doyle found his voice for the first time since Bodie had hit him. He knew from past experience that he was going to be black and blue when the bruises started to show.
“How’d you know?” Doyle asked through his split lip. “About Saturday night?” Bodie threw him a withering glare and focused on the road again.
“Katie told me” at Doyle’s sharp intake of breath Bodie continued “oh not willingly don’t worry, I had to drag it out of her but I knew something was wrong. You marked her up mate, did you know that.” Bodie said.
“I never!” Doyle defended himself.
“Don’t you think I know what bloody stubble rash looks like?” He demanded angrily as he pulled up. “Besides she was sore and stiff and miserable. Her first time and you totally ruined it for her. What the hell were you thinking Doyle? As drunk as you were I’m surprised you could get it up.” Bodie said and Doyle winced.
“She told you that?” Doyle asked miserable himself.
“Yes.” Bodie snapped “she told me that! Can’t understand what all the fuss is about. Reckons that sex is overrated. I think that’s what pissed me off the most. She’s gonna always think that some bumbling drunk is as good as it gets and we both know otherwise.”
“So what do you bloody want me to do about it Bodie?” Doyle snapped finally having had enough of the guilt trip Bodie was sending him on. Shit I don’t need any help he thought I feel guilty enough as it is.
“You’re gonna fix it mate.” Bodie said as he pulled the Capri over and dashed into a chemist.
“Fix it! How the hell does he expect me to do that?” Doyle grumbled waiting for Bodie to get back. “God, he hits like Mohamed Ali” Doyle groaned as his ribs made themselves felt. He watched as Bodie trotted across the road and tossed a chemist’s bag into his lap and got in the car and waited. Hesitantly Doyle peered in the bag.
“Condoms!” He said shocked. “What the hell are you playing at Bodie?” Doyle demanded suddenly suspicious.
“Simple Doyle. As Cowley says ‘you fucked it, you fix it’ so fix it. Show her what it’s really like not some 10 minute wonder.” Doyle stared at him like he’d lost his marbles.
“You have got go be fucking kidding Bodie.” Doyle said loosing his temper. “You just beat the crap out of me for sleeping with Katie. Now you’re ordering me to make love to your daughter again! You’ve lost the plot sunshine.” Ray was mightily pissed off.
“That’s right and you damn well will do it Doyle or I won’t give you some little love taps I’ll put you in bloody hospital.” Bodie snarled as he pulled up in front of his flat.
“Love taps my arse. My ribs are killing me and I’m gonna be black and blue when the bruises come out. Thanks heaps mate.” Doyle climbed out of the car and waited for Bodie.
“Serves you right!” Bodie said not the least bit repentant. They were still arguing when Bodie opened the door and saw Katie sitting at the table.
“Hi Dad” Katie got a good look at Doyle. “Oh my God.” She paled and took Ray’s hand and sat him on a chair. Doyle winced at her gentle touch and she rounded on Bodie.
“Just what the hell do you think you’re doing William Bodie?” Katie demanded hands on hips and Bodie knew he was in serious trouble with his daughter. Ray actually chuckled.
“He deserved it Katie!” Bodie replied and she turned on him in anger.
“Oh bull shit William Bodie, don’t you give me that bloody shit to make you feel better.” She stormed off into the bathroom leaving two stunned men in her wake. Neither had heard her swear like that before. Ray actually chuckled.
“She’s pissed off with you William!” Doyle said and Bodie scowled at him.
“Don’t I know it and don’t you start that shit either Doyle.” Bodie turned the kettle on and turned to say something when Katie came back with stuff to clean Doyle up with.
“Oh you poor love.” She fussed over him and cleaned the blood away. He looked somewhat better without the dried blood but he’d be bruised tomorrow. Katie gently kissed Doyle on the forehead and faced her father.
“You’re a bloody bully Dad. You leave Ray alone! I’m more to blame for Saturday night that he is. Ray was tanked, I just used some subtle persuasion.” Both men snorted, letting her know that they thought of that statement.
“I’d hardly call what you were nearly dressed in subtle darling. About as subtle as a sledge hammer that get up was.” Doyle gratefully sipped the tea Bodie put in front of him.
“You’re far too young to be fooling around anyhow.” Bodie said and Katie turned on him.
“That’s a bit hypocritical isn’t it Dad!” Katie demanded. “You were 14 when I was born so don’t give me that too young spiel. 14 for God’s sake. At least I waited until I was 18 until I tried it.” She was still ticked.
“And it was pretty disappointing!” Doyle said. Katie flushed. She knew her father had told Doyle what she’s said.
“It’s not what I expected no, but I guess it gets better.” She sipped her tea and looked very embarrassed. Poor love Doyle thought.
“Your first time shouldn’t have been with a drunk twice your age either.” Doyle said taking her hands and making Katie look at him. Neither noticed Bodie had discreetly disappeared.
“Oh Ray.” Katie sighed and kissed his knuckles. “I could have stopped you if I really wanted to and you know it. I only had to say no but I wanted you.” Doyle looked up at her, feeling his guilt wash away by the logic of this beautiful young woman. She was like a balm to his lonely heart. Oh if only you were 10 years older Katie he thought.
“I’ll make it up to you love, I promise. Come out with me next Saturday and I’ll show you a good time. Say yes my beautiful Katie.” He pleaded.
“Dad won’t like it!” She reminded him. It was his damn idea Doyle thought silently.
“Tough!” Doyle said defiantly. “He’ll have to get used to it.”
“OK” Katie smiled at him and Doyle felt has heart bottom out.
