Wake Up Older
Chapter Four ~ Cruel to be Kind
(July 6, 2005)
"....I need to see you."
Veronica's eyes teard up as she replayed his message for the tenth time in the past hour. Just hearing him saying that he needed to see her was enough to make her float. She flopped back down onto her back, sawying with the motion of her bed and allowed herself to finally laugh at the situation she was in. Three months ago she couldn't stand the sound of Logan Echolls voice and now it was all that brought her peace.
She was really starting to lose it. She hadn't been this nuts about a guy since Duncan, and what was worst, she had thought she was over that part of herself. She thought she had put the wimpering highschool puppy love phase behind her and had moved on to be a more responsible and mature human being,....fat chance. All Logan had to do was look at her with those deep soulfull eyes and she was a lost cause.
She knew she should try and contact him, to see if it was for real, but she just couldn't work up the courage, she was to nervous that he would change his mind and not want to see her. So once again she hit the replay button on her options list and relished the sound of his voice.
She had to bite her tounge to repress a 'damsel' sigh.

(Two Hours Later)
Logan's whole body jerked in suprise and he bounced up off the bed on reflex the second he heard his cell go off from across the room. He snatched it off the chest of drawers and had it snapped open by the second ring. His eyes lit up when he saw Veronica's name in the backlight.
He accepted the call before it had another chance to ring and held it to his ear, wanting to hear her breathe. The second he heard her inhale he lost all his nerve. He had thought he could handle this, that he would be able to handle speaking to her, seeing her butnow he wasn't so sure. Finally after about five seconds Veronica had realized that the ringing had stopped and was starting to get suspicous.
"Logan? Hello?.....Logan, are you there?"
Logan's eyes closed and he tried to control his heart beat. He swallowed and took the plunge. "Ronnie....I'm here."
Veronica's heart slammed in her chest with such force she felt all the breath leave her body and she fell onto her couch with a plunk. She had thought she would be okay with this, talking to him, but now she was freaking out. They had been circling around this moment for what seemed like forever and it was a little to much drama for her. She felt like she was on daytime t.v. She swallowed and rolled her eyes, wishing so deeply that they could just for once be normal again.
"Veronica? Are you still there?" Logan asked, his tone unsure. Veronica had to smile, that was the first time in a while Logan had sounded unsure about anything. Not since their first kiss anyway.
"Yeah, I'm here. I got your message. Big suprise. I was calling to see what the plan is....you know...for us to see each other. I know you're still trying to fly under the radar and all, so I guess I'm gonna come to you....or something." Veronica kept it all business, not wanting to get sappy over the phone. Sappy could and would come later... in person. Then she could also kick his oh so fine ass for driving her insane for the past few months.
Logan apparently glad that it was kept short and sweet proceeded to tell her the plan he had been working out in his mind for the past few days. "Okay, here's the deal. This weekend I want you to drive down to this little hole in the wall no tell motel that I've been staying at. I've reserved a room for you, it's room 17, they'll give you the key at the office. I'm hoping you'll show at around 5o on Friday, that way if things go okay we'll have a few days....What do you think."
Veronica's eyes lit up and she held back and smirk. "I don't Logan, a motel? I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with that. It might garnish my rep, you know that people hold me to a higher standard." She felt so much better when she heard him laugh in response.
"I'm sure you'll survive, So is that good for you? Can you pull it off?" Logan asked, already knowing the answer, Veronica couldn't turn down a chance of excitement, never could.
"Pen handy, give me the where."

(July 8, 2005 2:00pm)
Veronica grinned at herself in the mirror, wondering why she seemed to always dressing up for Logan these days. Shrugging it off she went back to applying her makeup, making sure to line up her dark voilet eyeliner just right and then dusting her light pink eye shadow over her lids, satisfied with the results. She sparingly applied dark brown mascara and then glided on clear lipgloss. She stepped back from the mirror to inspect her overall appearance and smiled. She smoothed over her lavender off the shoulder t-shirt and jean mini-demi skirt. Doing a little spin she decided that a light bronzing powder over her bare shoulders would complete her look, along with a pair of simple purple flip flops.
She turned from the mirror, bored with primping and stepped over to her bed, snatcing up her over-night bag and headed out of her room. She stopped by the couch to kiss her sleeping father on the head and then let herself out of the apartment, making sure to step lightly, not wanting to wake her Dad up. He knew where she was going, and who would be there, so she wanted to avoid the long 'don't get hurt' talk that she had endured ten times already.
She locked the place up behind her and stepped out into the day, trilled that it was so nice outside, the perfect weather for a road trip. Sher slid into her car, throwing the bag into the backseat and slipped a cd into the dash, she smirked as she backed out of her paking spot and then put the car into drive. This was her favorite road trip cd and this song somehow seemed to fit her situation.
An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic... don't you think
Veronica placed a hand out of her window, enjoying th efeel of the 70mph wind blowing through her hair, and the sight of the open road.
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice." And Isn't this ironic ... don't you
think?
Veronica started to sing along with Alanis and couldn't help the feeling of happiness that swarmed around her heart, making her chest begin to feel light for the first time in awhile.

She knew that she was making a mistake in getting her hopes up about this little trip. She knew that it was wrong to think that maybe this meant that everything was going to work out and that when she left the hotel on Monday morning that Logan would be with her, coming home. She knew all of that, but she couldnt stop the hope that was blooming inside her. The hope that her and Logan could work out and that they would be okay. That they could save each other.

(July 8 2005)
It was nearly half past five when Veronica finally made it to the hotel that Logan had picked. And when she finally did pul into the gravel parking lot of the place she was sure she was wrong. Logan Echolls would never ever stay in a place like this. It didn't look like a running motel, it looked like it had been abadoned for about twenty years. The roofing was awful, the porches beat up and weathered and the outside was in major need of a paint job.
She was starting to get the feeling that this was one of Logans practical jokes when she entered the motel office and saw a large, mule of a man that looked to be about 70 years old, sitting behind a counter , watching the 'Three Stooges' on a portable balck and white t.v with at small desk fan blowing hot air on him.
She felt like an idiot, standing there waiting for the man to acknowlegde her. She was about to draw attention to herself when finally he looked up from the t.v and looked her up and down, burped loudly, raised his eyebrows and stuck his middle finger up his left nostril. Veronica grabbed her stomach discreetly and tried not to cringe. She was normally a very accpeting person but that was just wrong.
"Wow, mister, you sure know how to impress the ladies, I'm in awe. Actually I'm Veronica, I'd shake your hand but I see it's busy scratching your balls. I'm looking for a key that's supposed to be waiting for me. I'm here to meet Logan Echolls...." Veronica looked at the man, hoping that he would catch on rathe quickly so she could get out of the office, it was starting to get a little ripe.
Instead of handing her a key he just rolled his eyes, removed his hand from his pants and pointed to a little box beside the portable t.v, written in scribble it said 'Keys'. Veronica coughed discreetly and stuck her hand in the box, trying not to think about what could be crawling on the keys. She searched for the key with 17 ductaped to it and waved to the man, who had already turned back to his show, and exited the office.
Veronica started to swear under her breath, cursing herself for being so stupid. She stalked down the broken down porch searching for room 17. She was finding pleasure in think up ways to kill Logan when she finally found the room, rolling her eyes and chewing her tounge she struggled to get the key into the rusted doorknob and groaned when the door gave up without much of a fight. She was about ready to give up and go home, convinced she had been screwed over when she felt someone come up behind her, blocking her way from getting out of the motel room. Shge froze, paniced, thinking it was the scary office guy when she smelled something familar, something soothing.
She smiled despite her foul mood and turned around only to loose her breath and the sight of him.
Damn, who'd thought she'd forgotten how good looking her was. Veronica was taken by suprise once again as she founf her lips caught in a kiss she hadn't seen coming, but she found her manners quickly and picked up her slack, kissing Logan back with all the passion she could muster. She dropped her key to the floor and wrapped her arms around his neck, threading her hands into his hair, to bring him closer to her.
Hell, she was liking this road trip thing.
