ch 5
Bringing her up to his shoulder he burped her and gently rocked her to sleep. He placed her in her bed and retreated to the living room with Sara.
He was getting used to the everyday functions of having a baby. It was easier than he has thought and having Sara guide him through it was better than he had ever expected.
He settled in on the couch beside her. “Sara, what was your secret from earlier?”
“Oh.” Sara became silent. I thought he would forget. No such luck.
“Well…are you going to tell me?”
Sara choked on her words. “I…I…um.”
“What Sara?”
“I don’t think I have a secret anymore.”
“What? Why not? How can you once have a secret and then all of a sudden not?” He seemed confused.
“I feel foolish.”
“I won’t judge. If you tell me a secret I will tell you one. Okay?”
“Alright.” That is fair enough.
“Well. When I woke up with you this morning it was the first time I ever did. That I ever woke up with a man still in my bed.”
“Ever did? Really?”
“No Griss.” She said with sarcasm. “I thought I would make it up.”
“Sorry, Sara. Do you want to discuss this further?”
“I feel like a fool.”
“Don’t. I won’t judge you.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
“Griss. I was put in foster care when I was twelve.”
“Why?”
“I’m getting there. Have some patience.”
“Alright, continue.”
“My mom killed my dad when I was twelve. She ended up in jail and that landed me in foster care.”
Grissom looked at her with a gapped look.
“What Griss?”
“I didn’t know.”
“No one did. It became too hard to handle.”
“Is that why you left CSI?”
“One of the reasons.”
“What were the rest?”
“I will get there eventually. Have you forgot the letter I wrote you?”
Of course not! “So what led to this, Sara?”
“With my parents?”
“Yes.”
She looked away from him.
“Sara.”
“It’s hard, Griss.”
He moved in closer to her to offer her comfort. He lightly touched her shoulders and his heart began to pulsate in his chest and his body became filled with energy.
“My dad was a good man…when he wasn’t drinking. When he was drunk it was a different issue all together.” His touch feels like fire racing through my body.
She stopped to breathe. It was hard; Grissom knew that, he patiently waited for her to continue.
“He used to beat me and mom.”
“I’m so sorry, Sara.” He touched her face.
“It’s alright, it is in the past, but it leads to why I am so emotionally deficient.”
“So am I, Sara.”
She smiled.
“I had a few male friends but they only ever wanted sex, not love, not me just what I could give them. I did that for a while in college and then gave up completely. I haven’t been with someone since college and I have never been with someone who loved me. Someone who woke up beside me… kissed me good morning and told me how much they love me. I was only used, nothing more.”
“I’m so sorry. My life isn’t much better.” He took a breath. “My dad left when I was six, my mother was deaf, and I wasn’t good at making friends.”
Sara reached for his hand.
“I have only had a few relationships if you want to call them that, they weren’t that meaningful.”
“I thought you and Heather…?”
“It was rumours; she intrigued me, nothing more. I found her lifestyle fascinating. I’m sure if I would have given in I could have had a relationship with Heather, but I really wasn’t interested.” I was more interested in you…only you.
“What about Amanda?”
“I had feelings for her but it wasn’t really love. She was in and out so much I didn’t really have time to develop feelings and now I can’t even if I wanted to.”
“I’m so sorry Griss.”
“It’s okay. What about you and Hank?”
“What about it? We were friends, nothing more. I couldn’t bring myself to be anything more. He tried…lord knows he tried, but I wouldn’t give in. I guess my head knew more than it let on.”
She chuckled.
“We are two fine screw ups aren’t we?”
“Sure are.”
“I’m tired.” Sara stated standing up. “I’m going to bed.”
“Alright. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Grissom.”
