Tears and Guilt
Lizzie could not keep the tears away from her eyes. She laid there on the exam bed in the Emergency room while she was being examined and evidences were being collected. Her mother paced the room back and forth, looking down with her arms across her chest. She had looked upset and just didn’t know what to do for Lizzie. Her husband wasn’t in the room to comfort her. She felt it was best that her husband stayed in the waiting area while she stayed with their daughter.
“There’s a lot of hair and semen, Lizzie,” the female doctor told Lizzie. She released her knees then took a scraper off the metal tray sitting by the doctor. “I’m going to scrape off the hair and semen for evidences. Then we’ll get more out of your mouth. I’m sorry we didn’t get them all out.”
“It tastes so disgusting. I’m not sure I can ever drink or eat anything every again!” Lizzie exclaimed in tears.
“We’ll get it cleaned out, I promise.”
“When can I have my clothes back?”
“I’m afraid not anytime soon. The police would have to take them in for evidences. You had a lot of semen on your panties and skirt and the police will also want to check for hair, fingerprints and fiber. You can put your knees down and we’ll get the semen out of your mouth now.”
Jo sighed, shaking her head, wondering what her husband must be doing now and when the police would get there. She looked up as Sam sneaked through the curtain. “Um, Jo?” he said.
“Yeah?”
“Are they almost done?”
“I think so.”
“Okay, I’m going to call Miranda’s house and tell them what happened.”
“No, no, it’s late. Wait till the morning.”
“I think Miranda’s parents should know now because Lizzie was over at Miranda’s house before this happened.”
Jo paused and nodded. “Okay. Has the police arrived yet?”
“I didn’t see anyone,” Sam shook his head then went to leave the room again.
Ten minutes later, Miranda’s mother put down the phone in the kitchen with a shocked look on her face. She could not believe what she had heard from Sam McGuire on the other line. Quietly, Miranda got up and walked into the kitchen where her mom was. She had a puzzled look on her face then she looked worried when she saw her mom.
“Mom? What is it?”
Miranda’s mother looked over at her daughter. “Miranda… I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I wasn’t home when it happened. I shouldn’t left to go to the store.”
Miranda walked forward towards her mother. “What? What are you talking about?”
“Miranda… that was Lizzie’s father. Lizzie was raped tonight after she left here.”
Miranda gasped in shock. “Oh, my god…” she covered her mouth. “Oh, god…” she moaned, about in tears. Her mom put a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s okay, Miranda. It’s not your fault, honey.”
“Is… is she okay? Is she going to be okay?”
“She’s going to be fine. Mr. McGuire called from the hospital and Lizzie is being treated now. The police are on their way to the hospital and soon, they’ll find out who did this.”
Without another word, Miranda dashed into her room to pick up the phone and call Gordo. She let the phone ring a few times till Gordo finally picked up.
“Hello?” he answered.
“Gordo!” Miranda exclaimed on the other line.
“Miranda? You’re lucky I have my own line so the phone didn’t wake my parents up. What’s going on, Miranda? It’s almost 4:00 in the morning.”
“Gordo… Lizzie was raped after she left my house tonight.”
Gordo laid in his bed for a minute then suddenly sat up. “What?” he said in shock. “Is she okay? Where is she?”
“I think she’s going to be fine. She’s at the hospital with her family.”
“Do they know who did it?”
“No, the police are on the way to the hospital.”
Gordo sighed. “Oh, my god… we should go see her in the morning.”
“I don’t know. They might just let her go home after they finish with her. Let’s just leave stuff alone and we can call Lizzie’s house tomorrow and see how she’s doing. I’m pretty sure she’s not going to classes tomorrow.”
“No, I don’t think she is. I can’t believe she went out alone that late. We should’ve done something.”
“She insisted, Gordo. There’s nothing we could’ve done.”
“I have a hard time believing it but maybe you’re right.” Miranda and Gordo stayed on the line in silence for a minute then they decided to say goodbye.
