Waking

Chapter four: Waking
MC2 PoV
The next morning I return to my humanoid form and go checking on Weyoun. It’s strange to find somebody awake before me, but he must have been because he is staring blank eyed at the ceiling. I sit down at the bed beside him and a slight tremble goes through his body; there is no more movement. I try to wake him of his catatonic state by calling his name, but he doesn’t seem to hear me. Then I touch him lightly on the shoulder and he flinches, but gives no sing of consciously realising that there is somebody trying to reach him. I don’t know if it would be better to simply leave Weyoun here alone to come out of his trance like situation by his own, but I’m uneasy at it. I try a last time and take his hand into mine. At first there is no reaction, then the vorta blinks once, twice, and at last starts searching the room with his nearly blind eyes.

“Weyoun?” I know he will not be able to see me properly, so I break the silence for him to identify the person who is staying with him. I’ll try not to sound too concerned, so he’ll be not hurt in his pride. “How are you feeling?”

The vorta slowly turns his heat to look at me and tries to figure out how much I know about last nights events. To his great discomfort he reaches the conclusion that I must know a great deal of it, for me sitting preoccupied at his bedside.

“Better.” His voice is a husky murmur. He looks away. Weyoun sits up with some efforts, but his body shakes too badly for him to keep steady and I reach to hold him. As I touch him the vortas body flinches out of reflex and he starts apologizing profusely. I want to calm him, telling him that he has not done anything wrong, but as the vorta he is, he apologizes even more.
I can see that Weyoun is a little bit uncomfortable in his nude state under the bedcovers, which is why I leave for the replicator to pick up some clothes, the style he normally wears. At this point I’m sure I don’t need to tell him in whose quarters he is, because he tries to disappear into the blankets out of embarrassment.
I go back with the attire and give it to him. “I leave so you can change”, at that he wants to say something, decides not to. After some minutes he comes into the living-room eyes cast down and a bashful red shade on his cheeks.

“Do you need anything? Something I could do for you…?” , it definitely sounds out of character coming from me and directed at the vorta, normally it is him saying this words, but at the present conditions it’s the only thing I can think of.

“No, thank you. I should return to my work now.”

I can’t remember being in such an awaked situation with a vorta before. “You should get some more rest. I think there is no need for you to hurry.”. I really don’t think he should be facing Dukat and Damar today, or even any other cardassian, but he simply answers:
“No, there is much work waiting for me, I can not let pass any day more.” He looks up one last time before leaving and smiles shyly. “Besides, it was not the first…”
Weyoun is gone before ending the sentence, and leaves me wondering about the situation the great ambassador of the Dominion is really in.

*******************************************************
The early morning has passed into midday and the first test for UPPS is running smoothly. Damar is being distracted by the noisy cardassian he himself glued to my heels, reporting the events of the last transport checking. Dukat has again conquered Ops and Weyoun is avoiding me, so there is no problem in shutting down a few force fields and making Kiras and Roms work easier. Jake is controlling the area personally, insisting on interviewing every Jem-Hadar who crosses his way, and checking on our main targets every now and then. I’m going to delete every trace our illegal distraction schemes could leave in the systems records and it will seem that the interferences were caused by the energy-system-fluctuations itself.
A low beeping noise sounds at the com-system. Kira has been able to fulfil her part of the plan. A little time later more of the beeping can be heard and it’s my turn to activate the downcast force fields anew, to end the first step of our sabotage plan. In half an hour we will all meet at Quak’s to talk of our daily routine as usual and let Damar get a little more suspicious, while he unconsciously assures our success.
At lunch Leeta starts ranting about the costumers on her Dabo-table and all the ‘news’ she has heard there. Again it’s nothing more than useless gossip about late transports, not enough freedom and stoic Jem-Hadar standing at every corner. Beside the fact, that Damar has not been spotted in the bar the whole morning everything is as normal as ever.
We part as usual and everyone minds his or her own business. Kira has to report to Ops about the new security codes she and I were supposed to work out all morning and I’m going again to one of my beloved cargo-bays with my beloved cardassian supervisor in tow, to check on my beloved, useless cargo-lists and make sure there is no more illegal Kanar entering the station to provide Damar with. The suicidal tendencies of the young soldier have decreased a little and he is not at al annoying today.
After his shift is over and the hangar checking done with, I go to my office and start the security reports of the last two days. I’ll be doing some extra work to prepare for the rest of the DS9-resistance anti-mine-field-dismantling-operation and then I’ll do my rounds on the promenade, assuring a peaceful night for the rest of the station.
