Twenty Questions
Jayne had come over to Book's quarters. "Good, River is already here. I was thinking of playing a round of 20 questions. The Alliance wouldn't give medical care to a simple shepherd. You're hiding something and River is going to tell me what it is."
I put my arms across my chest. "I'm not playing your game."
"You don't need to play, mei-mei," says Jayne. "Your brother says areas of your brain were damaged. I don't have his fancy words, but you think it, you say it."
"I can leave," I stand by the door. I can kill him with a thought. I killed three strangers. He has no reason to believe that I won't kill him.
"You leave." Jayne takes the old man's face in his hands then trails a finger down his chin. "I can come up with more interesting ways of having him answer my questions."
"I'll stay," I sit down on the shepherd's bed. "But I'm not saying anything. Na-na ah boo-boo."
"I don't know why you are interesting in me in the first place. I'm nothing," Book said.
"You aren't nothing and I'm going to find out what you are." Jayne pats Book's shoulder. "Let's get started on those questions. Have you been celibate all your life?"
Book acts like he didn't hear the question. His memories go back to a woman he knew. As far as his memories tell me, he never got past kissing. She was a pretty woman on the plain side with raven black hair. He fell for her body and soul and she left him.
"How often and was it with a man or a woman? When was your first time? Do masturbate thinking about it? When you do it with me do you want to be top or bottom? I think you would make a better bottom. How about a little sodomy with the shepherd? I can tell River to leave if you want it now."
Book curses in Chinese.
Jayne kisses his forehead. "I'm getting a rise out of you. Do you believe in that book of lies you call a Bible? Do you think there is God?" Jayne puts a hand on the older man's face and leaves it there. "You don't believe anymore. You're full of doubt. You doubt everything you lived for. You're afraid you wasted your life. No, you don't fear that there is no God. You fear that there is one and you disappointed Him. You aren't the servant you claim to be."
"You're upsetting him," I said, seeing the shepherd's doubt behind those dark eyes. No tears came out, butouldould feel that Book was on the verge of tears. I couldn't bear to see Jayne break the man.
"That's the point. I want to upset him. He gets upset enough; you will talk. I don't need him to talk. You will break before him. Let's get to the real questions."
Book spat. "You horny-toad bastard."
"Shepherd isn't a pure as he like us to believe. Now, who did you wfor for and are you still working for them?" He has an image of blue-gloved hands like the ones in my nightmares. I couldn't tell if he was working for them or escaping from them. Blue hands and red blood.
"Two by two, hands of blue; two by two, hands," I babble before I stopping myself.
"We're getting somewhere. You work for those monsters that exploded the brains of the Alliancficeficers at the hospital."
Book returns to having a sober face.
man many years have you been in their service? Did you work for them while you were in the Abbey?"
"Leave him alone," I yell.
"He's hiding ca." Jayne put his hand over Book's hair and removed the elastic band.
"I'll kill you if you rape him. He's afraid of you," I said.
"The shepherd likes the challenge. He thinks all his years of mental discipline are going to save him. Shepherd, would you like River to return to her room so we some privacy?" Jayne touched the now loose, white hair.
"I promised Simon I'd watch her," Book states with his voice showing no emotion. He is screaming inside his head about disappointing God. He is full of doubt, doubt in his error filled Bible. He tells me to believe, but he doubts himself and doubts God. Book refuses to let Jayne will not see the doubt inside Book. The shepherd keeps his stoic face.
"River, he works the Meh, tah mah duh hwoon dahn that drilled holes in your head," Jayne shouted. "Don't take his side."
"I retired to the abbey. I know nothing about the holes drilled in this poor child's head," Book stated; tears were pouring down his face.
That much was true. He arrived on the ship before my brother and would not have known what ship my brother was leaving on if any. His memories told me that he was in the Abbey on Persephone for a number of years.
"You are still more than you seem," Jayne says.
"You ain't no saint yourself," Book says, using Jayne's bad grammar.
Jayne trails a finger down his face. "We'll talk later and River won't defend you next time."
I walk off. It is the same game they played when they spotted each other on the weight lifting equipment. I'm bored of the game. They need to learn a new game. Jayne gives up his secrets to easy. The next time he thinks evil of me; I won't use a butcher knife.
