His heart momentarily stopped as he pulled into another spot. Who is at my house? What are they doing with Sara? What about the baby? It better not be Hank, I’ll kill him if it is. Sara wouldn’t invite him in; he must have broken in.
He jumped out of the truck and reached to his glove box and grabbed his gun. He cocked it and removed the safety. If somebody was hurting Sara they wouldn’t live to pay for it.
Running up to the door he has the gun to eye level. He turned the doorknob and kicked the door open.
He hears Sara scream. He has the gun ready. He hears another scream.
“Grissom, no.”
“Sara? Who is here?”
“Mara, Griss.”
He put the safety back on the gun and uncocked the trigger. “Mara? I feel so stupid.”
Mara instinctively began to laugh. “At least I know you will protect my Sara.”
“Always. I was so scared when I pulled in and there was a strange car in the yard. My heart raced and I was scared something happened to Sara.”
“That’s my Grissom.” Sara boasted.
Grissom smiled. “I’m so sorry honey for overreacting.”
“Don’t apologize. I have never seen you with a gun let alone draw one.”
“When my family is concerned I will do what it takes.”
Sara smiled. “Gil Grissom, I would like you to meet Mara Zorro, my foster mother. She has come from San Francisco to meet you.”
He extended his hand to her. “I’m glad to finally meet you.”
“Likewise.” She said shaking his hand.
Mara was an elderly woman Grissom presumed her to be in her late fifties. She had a hint of grey hair and she wore it in a neat bun. She spoke with a hint of a Spanish accent. She wore a coordinated pantsuit with a light sweater and her glasses on a string around her neck.
“So how long are you here for?” Grissom asked. Sara had asked him if she could move in with them to help her with the baby. They hadn’t even bought a new house, he figured she could stay in the guest room, but they needed to find a new house to accommodate their new family. This would be a big change for Grissom, he was used to solitude and shortly he would have a family too.
“Just a visit right now.”
“Oh, Sara had said she wanted you to move in with us.”
“Yes, if that is alright with you Mr. Grissom. I need to go back to Frisco and settle my affairs before I can just up and leave.”
“It is alright, if that’s what Sara wants.”
“I do, Griss.” Sara smiled at him and pecked him on the cheek. “If you will excuse me, Mara and I were in the middle of something before you barged in here. We were discussing babies and weddings.”
“Babies and Weddings? Sorry about that, what did you ladies want for dinner? I will cook whatever you want.”
“Chilli Macaroni?” Sara piped in. “It is my new favourite.”
“For you, anything.”
Grissom went about preparing dinner while the girls talked about wedding plans. By the time Dinner was ready they had the basics planned for the wedding.
“So how goes the plan, ladies?”
“Great, we will let you know where to show up.” Sara laughed.
“If that’s all I need to do, it’s good with me.”
“Well that and some money, we will need that.” Sara snickered.
He reached into his wallet and passed her his gold card. “It has a very large line of credit, by all means have fun.”
“I was only joking Griss.”
“I’m not; I told you I wanted to spoil you now is my chance.”
At that point he remembered the ring that was in the truck. It the haste of the situation he had forgot it out there. “If you will excuse me for a minute, I will be right back; I forgot something in the truck.”
Sara was puzzled. “What could he have forgot?”
“I’m not sure, Sara, but I am certain you will find out in a few minutes.” Mara interjected.
Grissom returned to the kitchen and pulled the chair out that Sara was sitting on so that he could take her hands. He got on one knee.
“Sara, I know I already asked you to marry me. I also told you I would do it right, this is my attempt to do just that.” He cleared his throat and took the ring out of the small box that encased it. “Sara Sidle, would you please do me the honor of being my wife?” He placed the ring on her finger.
Tears fell down her face. He took her into his arms. She looked at the ring on her finger, “It matches.”
“Yes, I thought it would make it much more special that way.”
“It does, you already know what my answer is, I already agreed to marry you, and you didn’t have to do this.”
“I know I didn’t have to, I wanted to.”
He kissed her passionately and stroked her tiny swell of a belly. He momentarily forgot they had company.
“Sorry, Mara.” Grissom stated with a hint of embarrassment.
“No need to apologize, I think it is wonderful how far you have come.”
“How far I have come?”
Sara felt the need to interject. “Grissom, Mara has been my leaning post for years, she knows all about our relationship, all of the sordid details.”
“She does?”
“Yes, she does and even though she has only just met you she is as proud of you as I am.”
Grissom looked to Mara and she nodded her head in agreement.
“So when is this wedding?” He asked.
“I was figuring February or March, there is too much to plan for right now and it is already October.”
“February or March?”
“Yes, right before the baby.”
“Ok.”
“That way you can get your house set up the nursery and plan the wedding and not be rushed about it.”
