Ch 41

“So Grissom, how are things going for you?” Dr Duluth asked.

“Great.” He chimed.

“Elaborate. You should really know the drill by now.” She was laughing.

“I’m happy for the first time in years.”

“Really?” She was slightly shocked.

“Yes. Sara and I have moved so far.”

“So the trip away was good for you?”

“Yes, very much.”

“What happened?”

“Well we know nothing is ever easy for us, I ended up with hypothermia. I was delirious. I kept thinking that Sara was dead, it was awful.”

“I thought you said you were happy?”

“I did, I’m getting there.” He chuckled.

“Alright, continue.”

He began to relay the dreams and nightmares.

Sara and Grissom were walking through the forest. She picked up a pile of snow and threw it at him giggling as she did so.

He retreated and threw snow at her. They both fell in the snow rolling around. They rolled onto the frozen lake. The ice snapped and before he could react, she fell through the ice.

He grabbed her hand and tried to pull her out. He was trying so hard, she was screaming his name.

“Sara…Sara…Where are you Sara?

She was gone. He lost her.

“How did that make you feel?”

“Scared. I’m scared to lose her. But Sara was wonderful through all of this, she never left my side.”

“That’s the sign of a good companion.”

Grissom smiled. “I’m quite happy with her.”

He recalled the next dream.

“I woke up with my head still on Sara's chest. We had fallen asleep after making love. He felt her skin, it was cold. Her eyes were glazed over. She was dead and staring at the ceiling. I felt her cold lifeless body again.”

“How did that make you feel?”

“I felt lost. I don’t want to lose her, I was so scared.”

“You said she helped you?”

“Well Sara took care of me. She was amazing. It made me see how much she does indeed love me. She loves me like no one I have ever met before. I feel so special.”

“That’s great. I’m glad you are happy.”

“That’s not it.”

“No?”

“No. We are getting married.”

“You are. Is it too soon?”

“It’s been nearly eight years, it is not too soon, besides, and we are having a baby.”

“You are?”

“Yes, Sara’s pregnant. Due in April.”

“How does that make you feel?”

“Happy. Scared. Excited.”

“That is all perfectly normal.”

“So am I normal yet, doc?”

“You are certainly well on your way.”

“Good to hear. I don’t want to lose my family. I really like the sound of that. Family, the only one I will ever have and the only one I want. I’m just happy I didn’t screw this up again.”

“Not six months ago you were a different person. I would really like it if Sara would come back and see me in a session with you.”

“I’m not sure if she will.”

“Will you ask?”

“I will ask, she may, and she may not. This pregnancy is a whole new experience for her, it is making her tired.”

“Does she have morning sickness?”

“Yes, quite badly.”

“I did with both of my children; it should go away after about three months.”

“I hope so, I feel so bad for her. I want to help her, but I know I can’t.”

“It is something all women go through. She will be just fine.”

“I know I just worry a lot.”

“It shows you care, that is allowed.”

He smiled. “Thanks.”

“So when is my next appointment Doc?”

“Is next week good, call me early in the week to let me know if Sara is coming.”

“Alright, I will see you next week.” He stood up and left the office.

I wonder if she will go. She didn’t like it last time but we have come so far since then. I want to make her happy, to show her how much I love her. I need to get her a ring, a proper engagement with that exact meaning.

He pulled up to the jewellery store and walked inside.

“Mr Grissom, how have you been?”

“Fine thanks.” This was where he bought her promise ring. “Remember the promise ring I bought, do you have an engagement ring to match that? I want one for Sara.”

“I think we did, just let me check.” She walked out back and promptly returned. “We only have a couple, what size does she wear? It was a six, wasn’t it?”

“Yes.”

“Well, you are in luck; we have one in a size six.”

“I’ll take that, please.”

“Certainly, I will get that ready for you.”

She packed it in a small box; he paid for it and headed home to propose properly to Sara.

Pulling into his driveway and there was a strange vehicle occupying his spot.
