FOUR

CHAPTER FOUR

As Bobby drove to the location that Gabriel had given him, Gabriel shouted through the window from the back of the truck "pull in here!" He didn't need to travel this way but he thought it prudent to keep an eye on the boys who were notorious for thwarting perfectly good plans.

Swerving around the corner Bobby added a little extra speed.  He looked in the mirror and saw Gabriel being tossed into Crowley's lap. Snickering, he watched Gabriel fruitlessly try to get off  but Crowley who was thoroughly enjoying himself gave him no help. When finally he managed to get to a kneeling position, Bobby slammed on the brakes and sent him face first in to his crotch. With the truck stopped Gabriel stood up, jumped out and looked along the street. He was in a run down area of the city and by the look of it, having a gun handy was more than the norm.

Sam looked meaningfully at Dean as he recognized the alley and the red door up ahead. He let Crowley take point and fell back hoping to speak with Dean but Gabriel was there. Deciding to bide his time, he walked forward and joined Crowley. There was possibly only one thing he could think of worse than Cas having the souls in him and that was having them in Crowley. He knew he would have to keep a close eye on him.

Crowley opened the red door and walked in. He climbed the piss stained stairs and went to the door at the end of the hall. Sam stepped forward stopping Crowley in his tracks. He cocked his gun and recalled the exorcism to mind.

Cas stood there in the middle of the room. His eyes were almost black, his skin blistered. He was a sorry sight for sore eyes. Raising his hand he pulled Sam towards him. Sam tried to stop his feet from moving but it was no use. With Sam before him, Cas turned his hand and forced him to kneel. As the others barged into the room, he lazily flicked his hands out and sent them sprawling across the room. Looking down he mumbled "Sam."

Sam stared at him, whatever was going on inside his body, Cas was putting up a good fight. Dean was the one that Cas always turned to, probably because the demon blood repulsed him. He knew Cas tried not to show it but the difference in how he acted with them both was more than tangible. With Dean he was almost childlike, looking for approval and trying to act human but with him, he could be the angel with a few quirks. Whereas Dean would miss the subtle nuances, he would hone in on them and here at this moment as he knelt at Cas' feet, he knew what had to be done.  He gazed longingly at  Cas with a look of hunger on his face. Cas smiled and nodded minutely. Standing up, Sam crossed to Crowley, pulled back his lips and bared his teeth.

"Sam no!" Dean screamed at him panic stricken. He knew what demon blood did to him and if he drank from Crowley while Cas controlled him they were all doomed.

Sam turned slightly, snarling at Dean, his mouth twitching up at the corner before swiftly lowering his head and sinking his teeth in. The blood tasted sweet, which surprised him and he kept drinking. When Crowley buckled with the blood loss Sam stopped, wiped his mouth and turned back to Cas. Without warning Sam began to chant the exorcism.

Gabriel and Dean joined in as Cas threw himself at Sam trying to kill him. It was the strangest sight to behold. Though he was hell bent on killing him, another part was trying to protect him. Gabriel rounded on Cas, his fists flying at him sending him hurling through the air at a dizzying speed to land crumpled on the ground. Cas stood up, shook himself off and stepped forward. His body contorted as he threw his head back and opened his mouth. A large plume of black smoke flew out of it and sought a new host.

It aimed at Dean but Sam pulled the smoke towards him and began to swallow. His eyes turned black as Crowley stood beside him attempting to take the souls into himself but it was futile. Sam was designed to accommodate so many souls and they went willingly.

As Gabriel helped Cas up, he turned to Dean. "You'll need to hold him." He tuened his head and looked pointedly at Sam.

How exactly was he meant to hold him? Dean had no idea but this was his baby brother and he had made a promise to always look after him. So, he made his way to Sam as Gabriel and Cas crossed the room and stood either side of him.

Puzzled by what was happening to him, Sam screamed out. His head rolling around hid his darting eyes. He stopped as he saw the men beside him.

"Now!" Gabriel yelled.

Dean grabbed Sam as Crowley, Gabriel and Cas lay their hands on Sam and forced the souls out. Sam convulsed violently but Dean held him tight. As the souls left him they were forced into the three nearest vessels. Cas grabbed hold of Dean as they apparated. Dean wanted to vomit. He hated angelic travelling but there was one more thing he could do. He pulled out the slip of paper that Sam had slipped in his pocket back in the alley. "He always was good at slight of hand" Dean thought. Opening it up Cas began to recite the portal opening spell. It was working. He kept going. Together Dean, Crowley and Gabriel opened their mouths and sent the souls back to purgatory. Crowley looked disappointed. He had hoped to keep them for himself but he wasn't stupid. With Cas and Gabriel he would be annihilated if he tried to con them.

Satisfied that all the souls were back in, Cas closed the portal and zapped Dean back. He rushed forward to look at Sam who was burning up and placed a hand on the nape of his neck and the other on his brow. Cas held Sam, closed his eyes and concentrated.

As Sam came round he didn't recognize where he was. He had expected to find himself on the floor in that dirty room. Instead, he was tucked up in bed at Bobby's.

"Hey, sleepyhead" Dean beamed at him.

Cas stood at the foot of the bed unsure whether he was welcome any more after everything he had put them through, but he wanted to make sure Sam was alright. He had promised to put him back together after the souls were dealt with after all.

Sam smiled at Cas and waved his hand in front of him indicating for Cas to approach. As Cas knelt down beside him, Sam wrapped his arms around him and hugged him tight. "Thank you, but next time tell us you need help. You're family." Dean rested a hand on Cas' shoulder and as Cas looked at the Winchesters tears formed in his eyes.
