The Journey Home

**The Journey Home**

*Sam*
Sam packed for her trip back to Seattle she wasn’t sure how long she was going to stay there. She put in for three weeks leave, if anything she could spend some time with her mother. She then walked around her house to make sure everything was off and put away.

*Carly*
Carly walked around her house to make sure everything was off and put away. Carly and little Freddie then walked out to the taxi waiting to take them to the airport. On the way there she started thinking about the two people that she wanted to see so badly but terrified her so. She knew that Freddie would be willing to forgive her but was she willing to forgive him, she didn’t know if Sam would ever talk to her again. She thought about the pictures in her bedroom, the picture of Sam graduating from boot camp and the picture of Sam leaving for the Middle East. She had gotten the pictures from Spencer who had gotten a copy of the boot camp picture from Freddie. She had also gotten a copy from Spencer of Sam coming home. It hurt her knowing that she had gotten wounded and she had never seen Sam or even called her. She knew she wasn’t alone but why couldn’t she put her fear of Sam seeing little Freddie behind her and just go to the woman that she loved.

She let these thoughts go as they pulled into the San Francisco International Airport .Her and little Freddie went on to meet their plane.

*Sam*
“SFO ma’am. Need help with your gear?”
The duty driver asked her. Smiling Sam waved the driver off as she grabbed her duffle bag. “No thank you Airmen I can manage.”
Giving her a small smile back. “Have a nice trip Lieutenant.” Then he was off to his next pick up. Sam went through the gates and made her way to the USO walking in three Airmen on leave saluted her. She gave the men a salute back and went to get herself some coffee. She heard a little boy crying out in the hall but paid no attention to him. If she would have turned to look at the boy she would have seen Carly passing by with little Freddie crying at his mother’s side.

*Carly*

Passing the USO Freddie cried out that he wanted to see the military people. Carly pulled at his jacket telling him to mind himself. She wanted to look at the people too but fought the urge, walking right passed Sam.
She walked on to her gate and waited with her son running around close to her. She heard him run into some one “Hey there son, watch where you’re going don’t want to get hurt.”
“Thank you, military person.” He said as he ran back to his mother. Carly turned to see who he ran into but the person was gone.

“We are now doing early boarding for those who have children and need special help boarding for flight 468 United Airlines to Seattle, Washington, we are now doing early boarding for those who have children and need special help boarding for flight 468 United Airlines to Seattle, Washington.” Carly took her son’s hand and walked onto the plane. She moved them back to coach.

She sat Freddie down then she took her seat. As she pushed the slightly over stuffed carry on under the seat in front of her, the flight attendant tapped her shoulder. “Excuse me ma’am we have over booked this seat could I see your tickets please?” Carly handed her tickets over to the flight attendant. “Oh I see here that you paid for your tickets after this young man did so he was first. I am going to ask you to please move.” Carly grabbed the bag under the seat in front of her and told her son that they had to move. She was escorted to the front of the plane. “Here ma’am that man was very rude so you get the first class seat. Please enjoy your flight.” She smiled at Carly “Is there anything I could get for you and your beautiful son?”

Carly was still stunned she just shook her head then said thank you to the very nice attendant. She had put Freddie by the window and she took the aisle seat. There were only two seats and plenty of room. She bent over to put the over stuffed bag under the seat in front of her when a blond wearing an Air Force uniform walked by taking the seat three behind her.

*Sam*

Sam took her seat trying to shake off the feeling that she had missed something. This was really bothering her military trained her to pay attention to detail. A little boy popped his head over the seat waving at her. “Hi military person, hey mom look it’s the military person. Mommy she looks like that girl in the picture you hide in your room.” He yelled at his mother.

“Okay dear you know every girl in a military uniform looks like her...wait what were you doing in my room?” She shook her finger at him. She never looked at the girl behind her.

“Right mom like I listen to everything you say.”
When the plane landed Carly and Freddie made their way to the door when Freddie turned and ran back “I just want to say good bye mom.” Carly ran after him when she reached her son she looked down at him

“Sorry ma’am I don’t know what’s gotten into him.” She looked up at the girl standing in front of her and gasped hard.

“Mom the plane you’re sucking the plane in on us for the love of god close your mouth.” Freddie waved his hands in the air yelling at his mother.
Both women look at each other “So.” “Yeah so” they both said.

“Okay you making a quilt with all this sewing can we go now please.” Freddie started to walk out of the now empty plane. “Hey all troops this way, mom stop looking at the living Uncle Sam poster and let’s go. You promised me a smoothie when we landed! You can even bring Elvis here with us. FOOD!”
Carly Yelled “Freddie will you please shut the hell up?”

“Freddie?” Sam’s face now white with surprise.
As they walk to the security Freddie continued to complain that he still didn’t have his smoothie and was making his plains clear that he was not going to stand for it any longer.

As they walked in front of the USO Sam pulled Freddie and Carly in along side her. “Look Fredwhine you can get a smoothie in here and it’s free, so shut it.” Carly had to fight from laughing she always like the way Sam killed the English language when it came to her son’s name sake Freddie Benson. She took little Freddie’s other arm and the three of them walked in to the USO.

They had found a little table away from the few people that was in the USO. Freddie sat quietly drinking his smoothie and eating a ham sandwich, Carly watched as Sam inched away as if she was going to run off at the sound of a starting gun. She kept looking at her watch and looking around like she was waiting for someone.

Then someone walked into the door looking around. Sam stood and walked the little distance away from the two people that she shared the table with. Carly looked at the blond as she walked over to the very attractive young woman wearing the same uniform but different in many ways. She couldn’t remember what the rank was it had been to long since she seen an Air Force uniform. The young woman didn’t have the same pins that Sam did, the other woman had patches. The hat that Sam had was different it was big and blocky where the other woman’s hat was small and reminded Carly of an envelope.

The other woman looked as if she was just out of high school where Sam looked twenty-seven. Carly quickly looked down at the table when the two women walked over.

“Carly this is my driver she will gather my bags if you give her your luggage ticket she will gather yours as well.” Carly handed Sam her and Freddie’s tickets for their bags and smiled. “Airmen if you would gather the luggage we will meet you at the front entrance.” The young woman saluted Sam and took the tickets. As she turned to go gather the luggage Sam called to her. “Airmen.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“We will have civilians traveling with us please make the proper arrangements.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“We will all be going to the same hotel.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Carly’s head then snapped up, she almost yelled her objection. “Sam no we’re going home. Well what was home...the apartment.”

“Okay then we take them to their distention first.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“No ma’am.” Carly raised her hand. “You can stay with us. No need to get a hotel room.”

Sam stared at the woman still sitting at the table. “Okay then you will take all of us to the same distention.” Sam looked at Carly to see if she had any other objections.

“I’m done.”

“That will be all Airmen.”

“Lieutenant.” The young woman saluted Sam and then walked a way to claim the luggage.

“Well I see the runaway has moved up in the world...Lieutenant.” Carly almost spat the words.

“Carly please I don’t want to fight right now, besides could you really blame me for leaving.” Sam then looked at the boy sitting next to her.

“I guess I can’t but to stay away for so long, I don’t see why you never came home.” Carly also looked at the boy, he wasn’t listening he was drinking the rest of his smoothie and looking at a game magazine.

“I did come home after I received my orders to go to Iraq, I get the ‘oh yes I will love you forever and I’ll miss you’ but then nothing. You didn’t even write me a ‘Dear Sam letter’.” Sam stood looking at her watch again. “We better leave have to beat rush hour.”

They all walked to the front door to the awaiting car. Sam smiled as she opened the door for Carly and then helped buckle Freddie in to the backseat. The Airman waited for Sam to finish then opened the front door for her as she climbed into the front seat she gave the Airmen the directions to the old apartment that once was her home.
Carly pulled her son close to her. She smiled and let a single tear fall as she looked at the beautiful blond sitting in front of her. She couldn’t believe how much of a bitch she was. She promised Sam that she would be there for her but she never was, she promised that she would write but never did. She promised that she would call but here again she never did. Then she promised that she would move to be with her, but no she moved to San Francisco no where close to Sam at all. This was all her fault all of it Sam leaving and Sam’s broken heart. It hurt her to know that Freddie has a bank account that she set up with the money Sam promised to send every month; she never went back on her promises. She said she would help and she did. “This is all my fault...I need a shower!”

“What’s your fault?” Sam asked.

“Your life, you leaving your home, your broken heart and all of your sadness. How could I be such a failure I never tried I never put my fears aside long enough to...

“Carly this is not the time or the place to talk about this. We can wait until we get back to your place.” Sam told the woman behind her. She didn’t want to talk about this over the seat of the car and in front of the boy, but she couldn’t let this conversion continue in front of the Airmen in fear that this could get back to the wrong people and her military career could be in question as for her lifestyle. She could be kicked out of the military and her life would be over.
The car pulled up in front of the Bushwell Plaza.
