Chapter Four
Onyx pulled her truck into the garage and heard Sam pull up behind her in the Impala. She hopped down out of the truck and waited for Sam to walk up the driveway and into her garage. She pressed the button on the wall that closed the large sliding garage door and opened the one that lead into the house. She dropped her keys on the counter next to the door and walked to her fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. She walked into the living room of her condo then with Sam following right behind her. Her condo was identical to Jade’s, only with one difference, the floor plan was like a mirror image. That is to say it made you feel like Alice peering through the looking glass. It’s the reason why Onyx had chosen the bottom floor master bedroom as her preference. The last thing she wanted was to share a bedroom wall with her insatiable sister.
Sam gave a whistle as he looked around the place. Considering the fact that the last few years had been spent in crappy motels, this place looked like a palace. He watched with silent fascination as Onyx moved about her condo turning on lights and finally moved to the small sunken bar area that sat off to the left side of the living area. He found it odd that a condo would have such a feature, but considering the company he was in, there were many things he couldn’t figure out. He made a mental note to ask more questions in the morning. She seemed to have gone off into her own world the moment she walked into her home. Home. The word seemed strange to Sam. Possibly because he’d never really known what a home was.
Onyx shuffled around her place turning on lights, which felt strange to her as she had the layout of her place memorized. She rarely turned on the lights to get around, but with someone new in her place, she figured it’d be nice to allow him the opportunity to see where he was. People tend to get freaked out if you keep them enclosed in a dark space for to long of a time… or maybe that was just her sister. Onyx finally stepped down in the sunken floor that was her bar and pulled out two glasses. She dropped a few cubes of ice into each and looked up at Sam.
“What’s your poison?” She said as she pulled out some whiskey for herself filling the tumbler with it.
“Whisky. Unless it’s mixed with Jager…” He said with a chuckle as that memory came back to him. That was a concoction he’d never try again.
“You mix whiskey with Jager?” Onyx said as she raised an eyebrow at him wondering how he managed to stomach that.
“Once. Just once… and I will NEVER do it again” Sam said as he came and sat down on one of the two chairs at the small bar.
“Huh. Suddenly greasy pork sandwiches comes to mind” Onyx stated as the random thought flowed through her mind. The look Sam gave her made her furrow her brow.
“What?”
“Nothing… just something you said…” Sam let the sentence linger in the air. It was odd that she would say that, it’s not a common response.
Onyx filled his tumbler full of whiskey and set it in front of him. She gave him a soft smile as she raised her glass to her lips and sipped on the cold liquor. She closed her eyes as she let the burning liquid run down her throat and felt that comfort start to swell through her. Whiskey had been her friend for so many years, it was the one constant that helped chase away the demons at night and let her sleep. She noticed Sam looking at her strangely and for a moment thought she saw his eyes darken but it was just a play of the light across his face as he moved and lifted his glass to his lips. Onyx was mesmerized with that simple act and Sam raised his eyebrow at her.
“You’re staring” He said as he looked at the woman who was holding the tumbler about four inches from her lips and still staring at his.
“Huh?” She said shaking her head and finally taking a long drink from her tumbler.
“You were staring” He said as he finished off his glass of whiskey, knowing how just the one glass would hit him hard, but he didn’t care. He shook his glass at her and smiled as she refilled it.
“Well who wouldn’t stare?” Onyx muttered under her breath forgetting that she was in close proximity to him. Sam just smiled at the fact that this woman was more like him than he’d thought. He just reached out and grabbed hold of her wrist. Tightly. He knew somehow that it wouldn’t scare her the way it’d offset Jo. He got the feeling from Onyx that she wouldn’t mind a bit of a possessive nature to a person. He quickly drank the second glass of whiskey and he watched her as she slowly lowered the glass from her lips and set it on the counter noticing that his glass was empty… again.
“Sam?” she asked looking at him not quite sure what to make of this
“Yes?” was his simple one word reply.
“Is everything alright?” She asked as she placed her other hand on the bar top and leaned over a little looking him in the eyes. They were normal, but something else about him had changed. She watched as he looked down at his hand clasped tightly upon her wrist and he suddenly let go like something had burned him.
“I’m sorry Onyx… I didn’t mean to…” Sam said as he stood up backing away from the bar and walking across the room to the hearth above the fireplace. Onyx frowned as she watched him move away from her and suddenly wondered if it was something she’d done or said to scare him off. She put the bottle of whiskey away, but left the two tumblers on the bartop… they may want them later. She walked over to him and stood just next to him, her arm brushing up against his. He was looking at the pictures on her mantle and she grabbed the one of her mother standing outside their old farmhouse with a newborn in her arms. Sam looked down at the picture she held in her hands and blinked a few times. Something about the picture seemed almost familiar to him.
“Who is that?” he asked as she wiped at the glass, cleaning her finger prints off it.
“My mom. Eight months along with me and Jade in her arms.” Onyx said with a lingering sadness in her voice. She missed her mother… granted she wasn’t the best mother, but she missed her all the same.
“Where was that picture taken?” Sam asked looking closer at the picture.
“The farmhouse Jade and I were born in back in Kansas” Onyx said as she looked at Sam and noticed the look on his face. “Why do you ask?”
“Dean and I were born in Kansas.” Sam stated in his calm tone that told her something was bothering him. Sam looked quickly over the rest of her photos. He smiled as he came across one of the two girls as small children… making faces at the camera. Such a drastic difference between sisters was strange. They shared a few similar features, but this picture showed just how different they were. Jade with her porcelain looking skin, flame red hair and bright green eyes, and Onyx with her smooth but lightly tanned skin, dark brown hair and hazel eyes with a subtle tint of amber. If he hadn’t seen the picture of their mother, he never would have guessed they were related. Then again, they both made the same funny looking face in this picture… it made their shared features stand out. After a few moments of looking over the picture Sam smiled so big he had to laugh a little. He and Dean had never been close enough as kids, let alone had a normal enough life to take pictures like that.
“Ah, I see you found our silly monkey picture” Onyx said as she saw the smile on his face. “It was one of the few times we got along as children. That was just after mom was gone… before things got crazy in our world.” Onyx said as she placed the picture of her mother back up on the mantle.
“It makes me wish Dean and I had been close as kids. We didn’t really have a normal childhood though” Sam said as he looked at Onyx with sadness in his eyes.
“Neither did we… but we had our moments, and grandma usually had a camera handy for just such moments.” Onyx chuckled then. The moments were always few and far between, but the memories of the times the two girls got along were worth remembering. Onyx had been so lost in her world of remembering that she didn’t notice Sam move until she felt his lips on hers. She stood in a stunned silence as he gently kissed her. She was almost afraid to move for fear that she had been dreaming. When Sam pulled back away from her she opened her eyes and looked at him, the same stunned look on her face.
“What was that for?” She asked still not quite sure it had actually happened.
“You just looked so pretty lost in memory that I couldn’t help myself” Sam said in an almost whispered voice and leaned in to kiss her again. This time she responded to his kiss and stood on her tip toes to bring herself closer to him. She felt his hands wrap around her body and pull her closer to him. She could feel the heat pouring off his body, feel the hardness of muscles as she ran her hands up his arms but it was when he laced his fingers through her hair to pull her into a passionate kiss that she felt her body start to melt. Just about the time her knees were ready to give way Sam broke the kiss. They could hear what sounded like a faint knocking somewhere. They both blinked a few times and started to look around for the source of the noise.
“What the hell is that?” Sam asked, a bit perturbed at the timing. He frowned as Onyx walked away from him, crossed the room and put her ear against the wall. Sam seemed puzzled by this action until he shook her head and sighed pulling her ear away.
“That is the sound of our siblings ‘getting to know each other’” Onyx said as she hit the light switch next to her that turned off the overhead lights. “So… do you still want to sleep on the pull out?” Onyx asked as she shifted on her feet looking at Sam.
“Actually….”
“No” they both said in unison. Onyx shook her head in an ‘I-should-have-figured’ sort of way.
“Alright, come on, my bedroom’s down the end of the hallway” She said as shuffled down the hall the late hour and want of sleep starting to effect her. When she crossed her room to turn on the light she heard Sam close the door. They could still hear the soft knocking through the wall and voices, though so muted you couldn’t make out the words. Onyx had gone into her walk in closet, pulled off her clothes and slipped into her oversized t-shirt and sleep pants. When she came out from the walk in closet she stopped mid step and her eyes got a little wide. There was Sam, clad only in boxers arranging the pillows on the bed. Onyx swallowed hard as she stared at the man who looked like he’d stepped out of a painting of Greek gods. Sam looked at her and smiled a sheepish little smile.
“Is this okay?” He asked in reference to sleeping in his boxers. “I don’t have anything else besides jeans” He said. Onyx knew from experience that sleeping in jeans isn’t comfortable.
“Um… yeah, if you’re cool, than I’m cool” Onyx said as she pulled down the covers and slipped under them. She felt the mattress shift with his weight as he crawled under the covers as well. Onyx who was used to sleeping on her right side, and not used to having another person in her bed, suddenly felt awkward. Sam made up for it pulling a strand of her hair off her face and placing it back behind her ear with about the softest touch Onyx had ever felt. Sam moved closer to her then, the heat that her body gave off encouraging him on. He placed a soft kiss on her lips as he felt her hand run over the muscles in his stomach. He pulled her towards his body as he kissed her harder and slid his hand under the hem of her shirt running it up her back caressing the softness of her skin. He could feel her hand move up to his chest and rest over the heartbeat she felt there, it was almost unnerving feeling her seek out his heartbeat, but not enough for him to stop touching her. Their kiss grew more impatient and wanting as his hand traveled over the side of her stomach and towards the waistband of her sleep pants when they heard a loud crash and thud from the upper area of Jade’s condo. The walls were in fact thin.
Sam and Onyx froze for a moment and turned their attention to where the noise came from, each with their eyes staring at the ceiling. They could hear Jade laughing hysterically and just assumed that her and Dean had managed to fall off the bed, and likely took a lamp down with them. Things quieted down after a moment and just as Sam was leaning in to place his lips to Onyx’s they were able to make out the voices that broke the silence…
“HOLY SHIT! I didn’t know you could do that!” came the sound of Dean’s muffled yell. Onyx made a mental note to never ask what it was about… she really didn’t want to know.
“Yee-haw!” Came Jade’s muffled reply.
“Yee-haw? Well… that just did it for me” Sam said with a sigh
“Really?” Onyx said looking at him funny.
“No… not in that way.” Sam said with a chuckle.
“Who’s your daddy?” was Dean’s rather audible shout. They could hear Jade’s laughter and that was about when the sounds died out and Onyx figured they either took a break… or just avoided the bed. The latter was her guess.
“Oh man… talk about a buzz kill.” Sam said as he rolled onto his back.
“Yeah. The mood’s kinda gone after that” Onyx said as she turned onto her left side. She felt sleep wash over her then and felt Sam shift on the bed, then the heat of his body pressed against hers and he pressed his front to her back and slung his arm over her stomach pulling her against him. Within moments they were both asleep as the short silence fell upon place.
