Tears

The next day, Jeff was about the same.

Phineas could tell Jeff was trying to make an effort to act normal, to laugh at Morgan's jokes or smile at Olivia's teasing.

Olivia stood and stretched.
"It's such a beautiful day, why don't we go for a walk?"
"Sounds good to me. Jeff?"

Sighing, Jeff shook his head. "Nah, I'm good."
Morgan was torn. She wanted to go with Bogg and Olivia, but then she also wanted to stay with Jeffrey. Jeffrey won out.
"I'll stay with Jeffrey," Morgan told the older voyagers.

"All right. Just be on guard," Olivia told them.
"We will," Morgan nodded.

Jeffrey sat back down, glad that he didn't have to listen to Bogg and Olivia with their chitter chatter.
As they left, Morgan picked up an orange and started to peel it.
"I'm glad for this time alone, Jeffrey."
"How so?"
"I just wanted to talk to you. We haven't seen much of each other,"
Jeffrey nods.
"Yeah, I know. I've missed you, too." he smiles.

Morgan knew Jeffrey was smiling, but there was something about that smile that just wasn't right.
"What's wrong, Jeffrey?" she asks.
"Why does everyone asks me that? It gets kinda annoying," he sighs.
"We care about you, Jeffrey. Don't you know that?"

How long has she known Jeffrey and he doesn't know how much she cared about him? Loved him? Even though they were only fourteen, they knew about love and how they felt about each other. At least she thought he did, anyway.

"I--I don't know, Morgan. I don't know what I'm feeling right now," Jeffrey looked down at the ground.
"I can help if you'd just let me," she whispered, getting close to his face.
She was going to get Jeffrey to talk to her if she had to coax it out of him!

"Jeffrey, what's wrong?" she repeated.
He couldn't look at her, his eyes staying on the ground
"And don't you DARE tell me there's nothing wrong, Jeffrey Jones! I know you too well,"
"I-I" Jeffrey couldn't speak. The words just couldn't come.
Morgan wrapped her arms around him. Why was he shaking?
To her suprise, he squirmed, violently pushing her arms away.
He got up and looked at her.
"Leave me alone!" he shouted at her and started running.

"Jeffrey! What's wrong?! Come back!!" she hollered after him.

The older voyagers heard the screaming and went running back to the picnic area.
"What in the hell happened?" Olivia asks.
"Where's Jeffrey?"
Morgan looks up at Bogg. "I'm sorry, Bogg. I only wanted to try and help, but I think I made it worse."
Bogg moans. "It's all right, Morgan. You tried,"
He looks over at Olivia. "Sorry to cut the picnic short, Liv." he appoligized.
She smiled at him. "It's all right, Phineas. Go take care of your boy."

Without thinking, Bogg went ot the apartment. He felt for sure that was where Jeff had gone. The place looked empty, dark.
"Jeff?" he call out, not caring to turn on the light.
No answer.
"Jeffrey?"

He passed the boy's room and heard crying. To his surprise, the door was open, so he slowly walked in the room.
The boy was not in his bed, but Bogg heard whimpering in between the wall and the bed.

He walked towards Jeff, who was sitting on the floor, hugging his knees and had his head burried in his arms.

"Jeffrey--" the boy looked up at him, pain clearly in the brown eyes and huge tears flowing down his cheeks.
The kid had been doing that a lot lately.
"Oh, Bogg..." Jeff cried.

Phineas crouched down in front of Jeff, wanting so much to grab hold of the kid.

"Jeff, please, tell me what's wrong!" Phineas begged.

Jeff shook his head, remembering what Drake said to him.

"Just hold me, Bogg. Please!" came the plea.
Gladly, Phineas grabbed the boy with his strong arms and wrapped them around him.
"Hold me," Jeff said.
"I am, Jeff,"
"I can't feel you!"
Phineas tightend his grip around Jeff, a little afraid he'd hurt the boy in the process.
Phineas felt the tears soaking his shirt, but he didn't care. Let the boy let it all out. It seemed the boy needed to cry.

Phineas admitted it had been awhile since the boy had cried. But, there was something about Jeff's tears that was different. It wasn't about sorrow, more like anger, hurt and pain.
The last time Phineas had heard Jeff cry like that was the first day he'd met the boy.
Those awful words he said to Jeff that he wish he could take back:

"What about your father? What would he say?"
"My father's dead,"
"Well, if he's anything like me, you probably did him in, too!"

Phineas held the boy tighter as he winced in the rememberance. How could he have been so calous? So unfeeling, so stupid??
