Chapter Four
Chapter Four: The Quiet Thing that No One Ever Knows
“Evan?” Rebecca’s eyes widened, “What?”
“So-sorry,” Cappie regained focus. “For some reason I thought I saw Evan over there.”
“Oh,” Rebecca turned to look.
“Just a figment of my imagination,” Cappie laughed nervously. “I have to go though. I will see you soon.”
Cappie kissed Rebecca’s cheek and then ran off to his car.
“But Cappie?” Rebecca held her arms out confused. “We weren’t done here.”
Cappie sped off.
***
Cappie jumped into his bed and screamed into his pillow.
“Cappie?” Rusty knocked on the door and entered.
“Go away Spitter,” Cappie said. “I don’t want to talk right now.”
“Cappie,” Rusty said. “You just screamed into your pillow. Maybe you need to talk. I promise I won’t tell anyone if you want to.”
“Okay,” Cappie sat up. “But shut the door.”
Rusty shut the door.
“Spitter I have a problem,” Cappie said.
“Clearly,” Rusty said.
“Don’t be smart Spitter,” Cappie said. “Here’s my dilemma. Rebecca told me she loved me tonight.”
“Oh man,” Rusty said.
“But,” Cappie continued. “When I went to say it back to her another name came out.”
“Whose name?” Rusty asked.
“This isn’t question time Spitter,” Cappie said. “It’s none of your business whose name I said. The point is I didn’t say her name.”
“What’d you do?” Rusty asked.
“I told her I had to get going and kissed her goodbye,” Cappie said. “Then I sped like none other til I got back here.”
“Well do you actually love this other person?” Rusty asked.
“I don’t know Spitter,” Cappie said. “I just started thinking about it the other day and this person has been on my mind ever since.”
“Well,” Rusty said. “If you love whoever this mystery girl is then maybe you should talk to her and see how she feels. You don’t want to let someone else think you love them when you love someone else.”
“You want me to tell this other person I love them?” Cappie asked, “The problem with that Spitter is that I’m pretty sure they love me too and I don’t think we can be together.”
“Well,” Rusty said. “Sometimes you just need to go for what you want. If you want this other girl and she wants you then there is no reason the two of you shouldn’t be together.”
“I can’t tell you how much I wish that life could be that way Spitter,” Cappie said. “If only I could really tell you who this was about. Then you’d understand why it’s not exactly the way you think it is.”
“Well why don’t you tell me then?” Rusty asked.
“I just can’t Spitter,” Cappie said. “You wouldn’t even come close to understanding. Trust me. Listen Spitter, I think I need to be alone. I need time to think.”
“Okay,” Rusty got up. “All I’m saying is, sometimes its better for you to be happy doing something that others might not think is right. I learned that by not letting my parents interfere with me being in Kappa Tau.”
Rusty left the room. Cappie fell back down onto his bed and stared at the ceiling.

“It’s the last day of camp,” Evan said.
“Yeah I know,” Cappie said. “That’d be why we are packing.”
“Thanks,” Evan said wrapping his arms around Cappie and kissing him on the forehead. “This summer has been so great.”
“I know,” Cappie said. “Let’s finish packing so we can spend the rest of the day together.”
“We’re packing together though,” Evan said.
“I know,” Cappie said. “I just want to get it out of the way so we can spend out last night together without anything to distract us.”
“Last night?” Evan questioned.
***
Evan shot up from sleep once again. He sat up and rested his head on his arms which were resting on his kneecaps. He inhaled and exhaled. He looked right; his phone was sitting on his nightstand. He reached for it and flipped it open and began texting.
***
“Evan,” Casey said walking up to the park bench he was sitting on. “It’s the middle of the night. What was so important?”
Casey sat down next to Evan on the bench.
“I just really need to talk to someone that’s all,” he said. “And I don’t really feel like I can talk to any of my brothers about this. Even talking to Calvin isn’t helping.”
“Are you okay?” Casey asked.
“No Case,” he said. “Not at all.”
“Okay,” she said. “Well I’m here. So go ahead and fill me in.”
Evan sighed.
“Well,” he said. “The other day I was talking to an old friend. And well, we began talking about the past and all, and now I’m caught up in it again and I can’t get it to go away.”
“What does it have to do with?” Casey asked.
“Well,” Evan continued. “I used to be really in love with someone. And now I think I might be in love with them again.”
“Oh Evan,” Casey said. “I know it’s hard. But I got over it and so can you.”
“What?” Evan looked at her like she was crazy. “Oh. No Casey, not you. This has nothing to do with you at all. I’m talking about my first love. From when I was in sixteen and at camp.”
“Oh,” Casey turned a little red. “So there was a girl at camp that you’re not over yet?”
“Okay,” Evan said. “In order for you to really understand what is going on I have to tell you a secret. One you absolutely cannot tell anyone else. I’m asking you as a friend, my friend, to keep this to yourself.”
“Um sure,” Casey said. “What are friends for?”
“Right,” Evan said. “The person I was in love with wasn’t a girl… It was Cappie…”
***
“Evan,” Cappie said as he laid in his arms the last night of camp.
“Yeah?” Evan looked down, “What is it?”
“Evan I really love you,” Cappie said.
“I really love you too,” Evan said.
“It’s just,” Cappie sat up and looked down at Evan. “It’s just that when we go back to school we aren’t going to be able to do this.”
“By this you mean sleep together?” Evan asked, “Or you mean like be together?”
“Both,” Cappie said. “As hard as it might be; I think we should leave this here.”
Evan sat up.
“You mean pretend it didn’t happen?” Evan asked, “Pretend we never did any of this?”
Cappie nodded.
“We can go back to being friends,” Cappie said. “The way it was before we got here. That way we won’t have to worry about what others think. What your father would say, what my mother would say.”
“I guess you’re right,” Evan said. “But tonight; can we still be in love?”
“Absolutely,” Cappie said pushing Evan down onto the bed.
***
“Wow,” Casey said. “Cappie?”
“It’s a long story,” Evan said. “But it’s tearing me up inside.”
“I guess that would tear me up too,” Casey said. “I just can’t believe that you two… you know.”
“I guess you could say,” Evan continued. “That I was a little jealous that you and Cappie were together. That’s why I was so comfortable taking you away from him. But then I fell in love with you.”
“Let’s not talk about that detail,” Casey said. “This is already weird enough for me. Maybe you should just tell Cappie that you’re still in love with him. Maybe he still loves you too?”
“Remember the other day?” Evan asked, “When I was sitting at that table alone? And you said if I ever needed to talk I could call you. Well this is what it had to do with. Cappie and I were having lunch together before you came. He blew up at me and left before you showed up.”
“Wait,” Casey said. “You and Cappie have already talked about this?”
“He gave me a chance to tell him how I felt,” Evan said. “But I just couldn’t take it.”
“Why?” Casey asked.
“It just wouldn’t work now,” Evan said. “We’re both in Fraternities. In rival Fraternities at that.”
“So,” Casey said. “Look at Calvin. He’s gay and in Omega Chi. Thanks to you he went back. Because you and the guys had his back. What makes you think your brothers won’t have your back?”
“I’m a little different than Calvin,” Evan said. “I used to date the hottest girl in Z-B-Z. The guys are used to me being the kind of guy that I am. I can’t just suddenly become a man who is in love with Cappie.”
“Well,” Casey said. “As your friend I’m going to tell you how it is. Chances are if Cappie and you were once in love with each other and you’ve already discussed it, then he is probably feeling this way too. If you two weren’t so stubborn you both would have realized this already. What you guys need to do is sit down and actually talk about this.”
“Maybe you’re right,” Evan said. “But I can’t call him.”
“Fine,” Casey said. “I will.”
Casey whipped her phone out and dialed Cappie.
“Hello?” She said. “Cappie! Good! Listen Cappie, I need a favor. Can you come to the park and meet me at the bench like right now? Okay great! Bye”
“There,” Casey said. “Now you don’t have to.”
