Chapter Four
Greg showed Jessa around the various areas of the lab, letting her meet the lab rats and see how crime scene evidence is processed. She asked questions as they walked, of him and of each of the lab rats. She and Wendy and Mandy seemed to hit it off, moving from evidence questions to where they got their pedicures and where did she find those adorable sandals. Greg managed to hold back the eye roll that was threatening and waited for her inevitable questions about Nick. He’d seen how she looked at him, the smile that she gave him. There was interest there. And from the look on Nick’s face, it was mutual.
They had just finished listening to Hodges explain why he was so important to the crime lab and were walking back to the break room when she started asking about Nick.
“So, why did Nick have his head down when I walked in earlier?” Greg grinned, that was his sister, go straight for the direct question every time.
Greg cleared his throat before answering. “Probably because he feels a little embarrassed about earlier.” She raised her eyebrow in silent question. “I mentioned that you’d moved to Las Vegas and what a great personality you have.” At this she groaned. “Yeah, I know. Anyway, he’s been having a rough patch, dating-wise and I thought...”
She smirked. “You thought you’d offer me up to him as consolation? Greg, I don’t think he was very interested. He barely looked at me. And THANKS so much for the ‘great personality’ remark, I’ll just go into seclusion now.”
He gave her an embarrassed grin. “I really didn’t think about it being bad when I said it. And you really do have a great personality. He didn’t give me a chance to mention you’d been Homecoming queen.”
They were back at the break room and Nick was still inside, making Jessa blush a little for talking about him behind his back. He stood when she went inside and offered her a seat while Greg went to the locker room for his jacket. They sat for a moment in rather awkward silence.
“So you just moved here-“
“You’re from Texas-“
They both smiled sheepishly. Jessa gestured for Nick to continue.
“Greg mentioned you just moved here. Are you settling in alright?” He asked, wishing he could just blurt out that he’d like to take her to dinner.
She smiled again, letting him see her dimples peek out again. “Actually I’ve been here for a month, as for settling in, with my schedule it’s taking a little longer than normal. Since I have the next three days off, I might actually get out of my house and see some of my new town.” Hint, hint, she thought.
He smiled back. Ok this wasn’t so hard. She was easy to talk to.
“And, yes, I’m from Texas. Can’t seem to hide that from anyone.” He realized that she kept eye contact with him and was really listening to him. “So you have the next three days off. Funny, the next two are my days off.”
“That is funny.” She said, willing him to ask her out for dinner, breakfast, or lunch. He was so cute, but he was also interested in what she was saying. At this point, she’d agree to walking someone else’s dog with him.
“So, I was wondering,” he started, as Greg walked in.
“Have you asked her yet?” Greg asked, looking at both of them with interest.
Nick shot him a glare and so did Jessa. Great, she thought, now he definitely wouldn’t ask. Great, Nick thought, he ruined the moment.
“Greg,” Jessa said, with warning in her voice. Then to Nick she offered, “you have to excuse my brother, he was born with hoof in mouth disease.”
“No, it’s ok,” Nick said, smiling at Jessa. “I was wondering, if you’d like to do something on one of your days off. Maybe see some of the sights.”
Her smile returned, thankful that Greg didn’t ruin her chance of a date with the charming man in front of her. “I’d like that, Nick. Um,” she pulled a pen from her purse, but couldn’t find any paper.
“Here,” Nick offered her a napkin from his side of the table. He watched as she wrote her name and number on it.
“Well it’s about time.” Greg said, exasperated. “Now, can we go to breakfast?”
Jessa turned back to her brother and raised her eyebrow. Her eyes were cold and he knew he’d pushed too far.
“I’m sorry,” Greg said, to Nick’s shock. “It’s been a long night and I’m kind of hungry, so could we go now?”
“Actually, Nick, would you care to join us for breakfast?” Jessa asked, turning back to him with warmth back in her eyes.
Nick shook his head. “No, thanks, I’m heading home. Greg’s right, long night. But I’ll call you later.”
She smiled and nodded. Standing she held her hand out for him again. “It’s been very nice to meet you, Nick.”
He nodded and watched as she walked out of the break room. Greg turned back to him before he joined her and grinned.
“Say it,” Nick said, knowing what was coming.
“I told you so,” Greg said, practically skipping from the room.
Nick chuckled. So far so good. Hopefully she’d continue to be normal and interesting. Hopefully he’d keep her interest. His stomach knotted and he wondered if he’d done the right thing asking her out.
