Part 4

Shawn felt tears welling in his eyes and coursing down his cheeks, as his knees started to buckle. Juliet and Mrs. Guster were at his side in an instant to support him. Then strong arms were surrounding him and he was being held against a firm chest, taking in a scent as familiar to him as his own. His father stroked his back gently, whispering the words Shawn had been longing to hear his entire life. “I love you, son.”

That was the catalyst he needed to let out the gut wrenching sobs that threatened to tear him up inside.

He shuddered as the bagpipes started again and the first shot rent the air, then the second, and the third, he thought they would go on forever, but finally they ended.

Trying to compose himself he pulled away from his dad, roughly wiping the back of his hand over his eyes, meeting his dad’s gaze he said softly. “Thanks dad. I love you too.” His dad gave a nod, then nudged him towards Gus’s mom, he went and stood next to her while they lowered the casket, she threw a handful of dirt on to it, followed by Gus’s dad and then him.

With the ceremony over people started moving towards the waiting vehicles, Shawn stood looking into the open grave, unmoving, as if rooted to the spot.

An arm wrapped around his shoulder, “You need me to walk ya to the car?”

Glancing sideways at his dad, he was amazed at how touchy-feely he was being, for all his teasing about him being metro-sexual it really was a comfort right now.

Looking back down, he tried not to choke up. “Naw, I’m ok.”

His dad squeezed his shoulder. “No you’re not, Shawn… but you will be.” After giving him a final pat on the shoulder he walked off.

A few seconds later Lassiter walked up and stood beside him. “Spencer…” He stopped and nervously cleared his throat. “Uh, Shawn.”

Shawn turned towards him, waiting for the other man to get out whatever it was he was going to say.

Lassiter avoided his eyes, instead looking off behind him. “About what I said the other day, I guess the situation threw me, I mean… you and I have always had this… thing between us and I’d never seen you serious about anything the entire time I’ve known you. But that’s no excuse, I’m sorry, what I said was inappropriate and out of line. Will you accept my apology?”

Shawn summoned up every ounce of acting he had, gave a small smirk, stuck his hand out and said causally. “Sure Lass--… Um, uh, Carlton, we’re all good.”

Lassiter shook his hand firmly, taking it back Shawn quickly changed the subject. “So, are you going to the memorial at Gus’s parents?”

Looking slightly embarrassed Lassiter answered. “Umm… I wasn’t sure if I was invited.”

At that moment Mrs. Guster came up to them, hearing the last part of their exchange.

Patting Lassiter on the arm she said in a surprised tone. “Why Detective Lassiter, of course you’re invited! I told that lovely Chief of yours to invite all of Burton’s police friends. But she a very busy woman, what with being chief and a new mother, she has a lot on her plate, it must have slipped her mind. I’ll have to let them all know before everyone leaves. I expect to see you there Detective, oh and Shawn honey, don’t forget I’m making you a plate as soon as we arrive.”

Shawn took her hand and bowed over it gallantly, kissing her knuckles lightly. “Yes, M’Lady what ever fans your desires.”

Blushing and giving a small giggle, she gave him a slight push. “Oh go on with you. I better hurry before everyone’s gone.” With that she bustled off in the direction of the waiting groups.

Shuffling his feet, Lassiter said a bit uncomfortably. “Well it seems I’m going to be there.”

Giving him a sympathetic look Shawn told him. “Yeah, ya better be, otherwise she’ll hunt you down later and give you in the sweetest, politest tones, the worse guilt trip you ever got, or she’ll call your mother.”

Shuddering visibly Lassiter said quickly. “Walk you to the car?”

Shawn nodded and they moved off towards the line of limousines.
