Chapter 4

Beams of light came streaming through the windows on the townhouse's south wall, and across the bed, illuminating the form of the southern gentleman sleeping in it. At exactly 10:07 AM, the brightest of those beams reached his eyes, causing him to squint and groan, as he brought his arm up to shield himself from the painful light. Just then, there was a tap at his door.

"Come in," he called in a scratchy voice, no doubt too quite to hear. He coughed and sat up, rubbing his hands over his eyes to clear them and tried again. "Come in." This time, it was much clearer.

Vin opened the door. He was carrying a tray, wearing the clothes he had been wearing the day before, sporting a smile that rivaled the sunshine outside, and Ezra detected sexy, day-old stubble along Vin's jaw.

Oh shit, Ezra thought, bending one knee and drawing the comforter higher on his torso.

"Good morning, Ezra. Hope you don't mind, I made ya breakfast." The tray contained scrambled eggs, toast, bacon and several slices of honey dew melon, as well as a small pot of coffee with a cup, cream pot and sugar.

"Uh... Thank you, Mr. Tanner. That was certainly thoughtful of you. It looks lovely." Consummately polite, as always, Vin still caught the look of hesitation on Ezra's face as he eyed the pot of coffee.

Vin laughed, and assured him, "Don't worry, Ezra, I followed the instructions on the coffee can fer this pot. I know my usual coffee is..."

"An acquired taste," Ezra supplied.

"Yeah," Vin said.

Ezra nodded as Vin set the tray in front of him, and then poured himself a cup, adding cream and a little bit of sugar. Tasting it, he said, "It's quite good. Please, have a seat, Vin. I would hate to eat all of this alone."

Vin sat on the edge of the queen-sized bed.

Ezra picked up a piece of buttered toast and asked, "How long have you been awake?"

"Since around eight," Vin replied and at Ezra's surprised expression, added, "I never sleep very late."

Ezra nodded as he chewed, noticing that Vin smelled like the shampoo that was in the guest bathroom and tried to distract himself from thoughts of a wet Vin by digging into his eggs. Once he had swallowed, he said, "I do hope that you made yourself some breakfast while preparing me a meal."

"Oh, yeah, I picked here and there."

"'Picking' is not 'eating,' Mr. Tanner. Help yourself to some of this. I could never eat all of it this early." He gestured to the plate with the small piece of melon on his fork.

Vin reached for a piece of bacon. "Early? It's after ten!"

"Yes, well, that may be, but it is still early by my standards," Ezra said matter-of-factly.

Vin shook his head good-naturedly. "If you say so."

"I do." He bit into the melon.

Vin smiled and then changed the subject. "So, would ya like some help givin' this place a personality? I noticed that mosta the walls are white an' the only rooms that really have furniture are the livin' room and yer bedroom here. An' I noticed ya ain't got nothin' fancy on any of yer walls."

Ezra might have taken offense from anyone else, but he knew that Vin didn't mean anything negative in his offer of assistance. He only meant to help a friend make himself more comfortable in his home. He couldn't help but give a small grin behind his coffee cup. "Thank you, Mr. Tanner. Between our work schedule these last several months and my decorator's seeming disinterest in my taste, it has been quite trying getting room designs finalized. Perhaps if the two of us worked to that end, we might be able to make some progress."

Vin smiled. Ezra was accepting his help. "Alright then. How 'bout we get started today, if ya don't have anything else to do?"

"That sounds like an excellent idea, Mr. Tanner. If you'll excuse me for a moment, I'll be ready to depart momentarily." Ezra moved the mostly empty tray aside and swung his legs over the side of the bed, finally sufficiently distracted to get out of bed in front of Vin without embarrassing himself.

Ezra swept past him into the corridor that led past the walk-in and linen closets and into the large master bath. Vin couldn't help but let his eyes linger on Ezra's defined shoulders and back, down to his slim waist and muscular thighs and calves. His ass was obscured by blue-striped cotton boxers. Vin shook his head at himself, picked up the tray and walked out the door, closing it behind him, as he heard Ezra turn the shower on.
