Chapter 4
They had been on the road for hours, Mara had finally fallen asleep about an hour ago after crying and demanding from Sam why he couldn't feel the demon. She cried even harder when he told her he wasn't able to feel the demon at all. She ended up cring so hard that Dean had to pull over so she could get out of the car and throw up on the side of the road. Once she was back in the car she said nothing and just pulled Sam's hoodie over herself and fell asleep. Sam watched her for awhile and then climbed into the front seat with his brother.
"How is she doin' Sammy?" Dean asked staring out at the road knowing if he looked in the backseat
he would break down. Listening to his daughter cry like that had very nearly ripped his heart out. It hurt just as much as when Sam would cry when he was little.
Sam leaned over to his big brother and kissed his cheek softly, stroking his hair. "She's fast asleep now, she exhausted herself crying like that." Dean nodded, nearly melting into Sam's touch but he needed to keep a lookout for motel signs, he knew they all needed to rest.
"Why did she want to know if you could sense the demon, why was that getting her so upset?"
Sam shrugged and rested his head on Dean's shoulder."I think she feels so alone, like a freak because of it. I get the feeling that she can do alot more than that, Dean." Sam turned his head to look at his brother. Dean was very carefully ignoring Sam's gaze, and Sam knew that he was hiding something. "Dean, what is it?"
Dean shrugged and took an exit off of the highway to another random small town. "You remember how different Amber was Sam?" Sam sat up and just grinned and nodded.
"Yeah, I thought she was the coolest chick ever." Dean smirked and shook his head.
"Oh I know you did, I had to get rid of you enough times because of that. The thing is Sammy, Amber was a pure blood witch...traced all the way back to Salem, from the few true witches that were there." Dean glanced at Sam then to see his face. Sam was doing the expected confused puppy expressions, which meant he had no idea what to say. "That was part of the reason dad seemed to not like her, because she was
supernatural he distrusted her. But he knew she wasn't going to kill people, so he came around. So because
Amber was a witch I figured Mara would be a bit special." Dean cleared his throat as Sam blinked and looked at him.
"Yah think?" Sam couldn't get over what he had just heard. "Why didn't you tell me?" He said with the
expected little brother pout, didn't matter how old he was Dean could always make him do it.
"You were like twelve Sam, you would have pestered her with every question in the book and I was
basically interested in being alone with her at the time." Sam snorted and Dean looked slowly over at his little brother.
"Well you certainly accomplished being alone with her at least once." Sam bit his lip to keep from
laughing. Dean rolled his eyes at him.
"Shut up bitch." He grumbled at Sam while his lips formed his perfect smirk. Sam grinned and motioned to a motel up ahead.
"Hey I'm not the one who was usually on the receiving end big brother." Dean's mouth gaped as his
face turned red and they finally they pulled into the motel, no better or worse than their normal places.
Sam jumped out of the car quickly and headed to the office to get them a room. He was very amused that he put that look on his brother's face. Dean walked to the backseat a bit off balance and opened the door scooping up the sleeping child and holding her close. In her sleep Mara's hand came out of the hoodie and took hold of Dean's amulet and she nuzzled closer.
"Daddy...safe now" She whispered as a small smile spread across her face. Dean swallowed hard
and glanced up when he heard someone clear their throat. He saw Sam standing there with a wide grin on his face and Dean just mock glared and kissed her forehead.
"Alright you got us a room then college boy?" Sam nodded, his shaggy bangs falling into his eyes,
making Dean's hand itch to run his hand through his little brother's hair. He watched as Sam walked over to the room and unlocked the door, and holding it open for Dean. He came in and set the girl on one of the beds and then looked up at Sam. "Um...so I guess were sharing a bed Sammy." Sam shrugged and yanked off his t-shirt.
"Yeah, wouldn't be the first time." He grinned that grin again and headed into the shower. Dean bit his lip and remembered what it was like when they did share a bed all the time and felt an ache deep inside his chest and a definite ache between his legs. Dean glanced at Mara sleeping soundly on the bed and then went to the door, locked it and then proceeded to salt the door and windows and then started for the bathroom
himself. Ok so he knew it was bad parenting but he couldn't stand it any longer, he needed Sam. And the
bathroom door had a lock, and who could hear anything over the shower.
