Chapter 4
AN: Okay, I’ve been thinking (which is really dangerous thing lol) about what I said before regarding an AU Earth. I was pretty much set on the idea but the more I thought about it (especially after Evil Clone’s review) the more I didn’t want to do it. I’d have to create a whole new Earth with different cultures, history and such but than it wouldn’t be Earth. Than my last review from Dark Light (who asked me whether the AU Earth would be based from a book or movie) and a plot bunny viciously attacked me. I’m okay, just a little bruised but the good thing is that I have an IDEA! Muhahahaha! Unfortunately for you readers, it will be at least another chapter or so before I explain how the new arrivals got to where they were. But you will get some hints in this chapter.
Again, thanks so much for all the reviews. You’ve guys have really got me excited about this story and make me want to write more and more for this story. I may have to rethink the idea of waiting before rewriting the earlier parts and getting it beta’d. Hopefully my beta won’t hurt me too much. I have e-mailed the wonderful and talented Elfmaiden25 regarding this story. Hopefully, she is familiar with the series and will be able to help out with it. We’ll see!
Thanks to Polaris, Aleja21, EvilClone, Jon891, WHB21C, Ayana45, Ivan. K and DarkLight for the wonderful reviews.
The new President of the Twelve Colonies stood at the far back of the now active hanger. She watched silently as three Raptors slowly led the much larger ship into the hanger. Over the speakers she heard Starbuck, Apollo and Helo coordinate their actions as they gently lowered the ship onto the flight deck. Chief Tyrol and a small group of deckhands quickly disengaged the heavy bindings attaching the Earth ship allowing the Raptors to move away safely.
Laura’s stare was fixated on the ship and the brief images it produced when she had first seen it on the Cylon base. She wished Elosha was still with her, the priestess had been an infinite source of comfort for Laura and her presence was needed more than ever.
Laura hadn’t said anything regarding the brief vision she had had. The background had been eerily similar to the aerial photographs of Kobol that had briefly shown the mighty city in its prime. Except she had been within its limits and was watching as a crowd cheered as a similar ship began prepping for takeoff. In a language she was unable to comprehend, the crowd began to chant rhythmatically. She soon realized that it was a countdown. As the cheering once again took over the crowd, the ship moved up into the sky and was soon flying further away.
Blinking, Laura returned into the present. The images didn’t make any sense to the information they had learned. If the ship was from Kobol than why would it show up centuries later on a deserted Cylon base with twelve earthlings at its helm.
She shook herself away from her musings and questions and walked towards the ship.
Chief Tyrol walked under the ship, trying to find the console that would hold the operating controls for the hatch. Before he could complete his inspection, he was joined by the President as well as Commander Adama.
“How are the transfers going?” Adama asked.
Looking over to the other side of the bay, the three colonists could see the pods and several medical and engineer staff attending to them.
“Well…the hard part was to keep the power supply flowing during the transfer so it wouldn’t interrupt the…um the people inside the pods. We had to hook up individual generators to each container during the transfer.” He led the Commander and the President to the area designated for the suspended Earthlings.
Dr. Baltar noticed their arrival. He walked over and listened in as Chief Tyrol explained where the current power supply was coming from as well as Chief Tyrol’s assurances that the power being directed from Galactica would not interrupt in its daily operations.
“In case of a power shortage, the generators used during the transfer will still be attached and will take over energy needs.” Chief Tyrol completed his report. “I…I still haven’t had a chance to look over the ship.”
Adama nodded to Tyrol and the Chief saluted before departing, allowing Dr. Baltar to give his own findings regarding the Earthlings.
“I vaguely remember reading about an old research grant being granted to a group of scientists to study the possibility of suspending animation in a human body. Some of the possible discoveries would be in terminal ill patients. By suspending animation, those that could afford it, would be able to stop the illness that was destroying their bodies until a cure could be found even if it was years in the future.”
Dr. Baltar paused momentarily before continuing. “That was before the Cylon War. I don’t remember anything being mentioned about it afterwards.”
He motioned towards the pod and the three walked to the first pod. “It looks as if the Cylons have used that information and build upon it. We were able to get a sample of the liquid inside from several of the pods. It has all the nutrients a body in this state needs in order to sustain it over a long period of time. Electrolytes, vitamins, minerals…everything.”
“How were you able to gather the liquid sample?” Laura asked. “The pods look impenetrable without completely opening it.”
“We drilled a microscopic sized hole into six of the pods and extracted a small sample of the liquid as well as a small blood and tissue sample. We needed enough of the liquid to study but we couldn’t extract the amount from one pod because it may disrupt the state of these…Earthlings.” Gaius said but was distracted by the woman beside him.
“Your killing them, Gaius.” Pure venom spewed from the luscious lips of the Cylon ghost.
“Um…I was also able to determine the approximate time they have been suspended.” He continued, trying to ignore the angry vision standing next to him.
“How long?” Adama asked tersely.
“Well, I had to actually take into account the degradation…the half-life of the used elements of the…” Gaius continued.
“How long?” Adama asked again.
Clearing his throat before answering. “Over 25 years.”
Laura’s eyes widened considerable. “Over 25 years! Do you mean that these…people have been trapped in these…containers for more than 25 years.”
“Well, they don’t realize the passage of time. Brain activity has been shut down to its barest minimum. There is only enough activity to…to keep the heart pumping and the lungs working. No conscious thought is registering in our monitors.”
Laura became upset at the Doctor’s flippant attitude. “And when we wake them, Doctor? If they are Earthlings and WHEN we find Earth, how do you think they will feel when everything they know is gone…their family…their friends…everything familiar would be different. They might not realize it now, Doctor, but once they do…it will affect them.”
“Yes, Gaius. Just think about it. You fall asleep and wake up 25 years later. How would you feel?” Number Six cooed.
Dr. Baltar cleared his throat once again but remained silent.
“Do we know if they are human or not, Dr. Baltar?” Adama interrupted.
“Their human. At least three of them are. Again, I only have six samples and I’ve only run the Cylon detector on three of them. Dr. Cottle has looked at all six of the blood and tissue samples and he reported that they are healthy. We did notice some slight differences…”
“Differences?” Adama questioned.
“Well, if these are Earthlings…than there has been centuries of separation between us and them. A natural evolution and their new environment on Earth could account for the slight differences in their blood and tissue chemistry but’ he clarified ‘nothing is synthetic, NONE of the Cylon synthetic fibers can be found in the samples.”
Adama and President Roslin remained silent as they each thought over the new information regarding the Earthlings.
“Do you know how to…wake them?” Laura asked.
“It’s quite simple really. By just opening the pod and removing the body…um, the Earthling from the liquid should…shock them to waking.” Gaius answered.
“Thank you, Dr. Baltar.” Adama gave his farewell and without further words began walking away with the President following.
The pair walked out of the bay and nodded to the two guards at the door. As they walked towards the more populated area of the Galactica, President Roslin asked. “Do you plan on waking them?”
“Eventually.” He simple said. “But there may be a problem besides the fact of the language barrier that would occur.”
“What is it?” She asked worriedly.
“I remember the research, Dr. Baltar mentioned. There was a major flaw to the findings. They had tried the same procedure on a few lab animals…upon awaking them after a few months, the animals exhibited signs of brain damage.”
Laura gasped. “Lords.”
Adama nodded sadly. “These humans may be our link to finding Earth. And as strange as it may sound, I hope the Cylons were able to overcome the trauma induced by suspended animations.”
