Meeting with Barb

CHAPTER FOUR

Like it did every weekday at the same time, her lesson was interrupted by the bell. The students did not care that she was not done; they jumped out of their seats and rushed to pack up their bags in hopes of getting out of the class room before they were assigned any homework.

“Okay class, Work on page 50 in your workbooks. The first ten sentences are to be diagramed on a separate sheet of paper and handed in tomorrow. It will count as quiz grade!” Barbara said, closing the book on her desk. She remained seated as the students began to pack up and leave.

The students moaned. None of them were able to pack up fast enough so they could no longer any excused why they could not do the homework. In less than a minute, the room was empty; all save one. “Helena?” Barbara said with a surprised look on her face and as she placed her glasses on the desk.

“How are you holding up, Barbara?” She smiled as she entered the room.

“Okay, considering,” Barbara replied, pulling her suitcase from the floor.

Helena walked to the desk and helped her gather up her things. “How’s Richard?”

“He’s keeping busy. We need the money, now more than ever,” Barbara replied as Helena handed her everything on the desk that needed to be packed into her suitcase. She placed them inside and locked it shut. “Would you mind giving me a hand?”

Helena ran around the desk and helped her up to her feet, bringing Barbara’s huge round tummy out from hiding underneath the desk. “It won’t be much longer.”

“Thank heavens for that,” Barbara gasped. “I can’t wait to get it out of me. You try carrying this heavy load in your stomach for nine months,” Barbara said stretching her legs. “Well I suppose one day you will, if you ever get around to getting married.”

Helena picked up on her suggested comment. “We’ll set a date, sometime,” She defended.

“When?” Barbara challenged. “You two have been together longer than Richard and myself and we’re about to have our first child. You two haven’t even set a date for the wedding. What are you waiting for?”

“I don’t know,” Helena shrugged as the two of them slowly walked out of the class room and down the hallway full of students. “I just don’t think we need to rush into marriage so quick. There is so much in life to enjoy.”

“Can I say something without you being offended?” Barbara said, looking at her firmly. “It seems to me that you have a restless spirit. Look at the motorcycle that you bought. What possible need can you have for buying a motorcycle?”

“I don’t know. I suppose the thrill of it. I mean, if you only saw me racing today, and being launched up into the sky only to…”

Barbara gave her the look told her that Helena had just made her point for her. “You see what I mean? I think there is a part of you who misses being the Huntress.”

Helena looked down to her feet and though about the words she were speaking. She searched her soul sincerely to find out of this was true or not. During the quick soul searching, memories of all the adventures she had flashed before her eyes. It went as far back as the day she had first met Dinah and the day she first met Detective Reese. From there, the time they spent together fast forward in her mind. “I suppose I miss it just a little,” Helena consented.

“Then why not go back to doing what you were meant to do?”

“I wouldn’t dream of going back without you. We’re partners!” Helena said.

“Helena, you don’t need me anymore. You are what…twenty-four years old? You are a hero by your own right. You’re too young to retire now. Me, on the other, I am getting too old. I am in my mid thirties and on top of that, I’m about to give birth. You, you still have plenty years left where you can still make a difference, and if things continue to go the way it has been going…” Barbara paused in her walking to look her straight in her eyes. “Then New Gotham may need the Huntress one more time.”

The two women exited out of the school building and walked towards a wooden bench. Helena thought about those words for a second, leaving a moment silence between the two of them. Barbara was right. Things have gone down hill for New Gotham since they went their separate way. Things had to be shaken up around here once more. Just maybe, the Huntress will live once again. To Helena’s amazement, just the thought of it sparked something inside of her that she had not realized had been missing in her life these past two years: passion.

Helena helped Barbara sit down on the bench. “Is Richard going to be picking you up?”

“He should be here any minute,” Barbara said, breathing heavily. Walking with a heavy load in her stomach was exhausting. She was surprised that her ankles were able to handle it, then again, they were extremely swollen.

“I’ll stay here with you while you wait.”
