Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Jason and the others turned off the road and raced down the dirt path with desperate urgency. They called out Tommy’s name as their footsteps thundered further into the patch of forest. Each passing second seemed to last an eternity, while their shouts went unanswered.
As they rounded a bend in the trail, their fears became realized. In a small clearing off to the side were five female Putties standing silently over Tommy’s motionless body.
“Get away from him!” shouted Jason. He charged at them, making a bee line straight for the closest one. “I said get awa----ooooof!” The Red Ranger was flung violently back, having received a spinning kick square in the chest.
Zack, Trini, Kimberly, and Billy rushed to their comrade’s aid, but once again Rita’s evil creations were spirited away -wicked smiles spread across their faces as they vanished.
“Are you ok?” asked Billy, reaching down.
Jason accepted the hand, dusting himself off, and rubbed his smarting sternum. “I’m fine.”
“We’re too late,” said Kimberly, her voice barely louder than a whisper. Her words resonated deeply with everyone. She dropped to her knees next to Tommy and tenderly brushed a lock of hair from his face. “What have those things done to him? He’s so still. Is…is he..”
Jason knelt down beside her and placed a finger on Tommy’s neck. “No,” he assured her. “Its weak, but he has a steady pulse. Let’s hurry up and get him back to the command center.”

Kimberly paced nervously back and forth as she watched Billy and Alpha examine Tommy. “What’s wrong with him? Is he going to be alright?” she finally blurted out.
“Well, he is stable right now, said Billy, finally looking up. “but he’s in some sort of coma-like state.”
Alpha waved a futuristic looking electronic device over Tommy’s body. Different colored lights blinked on and off giving assorted readings only the sentient robot could fully understand. “There is no physical reason that the scanner is picking up that can explain his condition,” he stated glumly.
“I sense that something has happened to Tommy’s Ranger powers. They are either dormant, or worse, completely absent,” added Zordon. “This might explain his current state. Rita’s creations must have found a way or are somehow capable of doing this. This ability makes them much more dangerous than we previously thought.”
“Damn it!” Jason slammed his fist on a nearby console. The others very rarely saw their leader lose his temper. He was usually the very definition of cool and collected, even in the heat of battle. After Kimberly, he was the closest to Tommy, and they knew he was taking this situation exceptionally hard as well.
“Man, I don’t believe this,” said Zack, exasperation in his voice. “Now there are five of those new putties, and we weren’t even there when they jumped our friend.”
Kimberly gazed down at Tommy and placed her hand over his. “It’s all my fault. I should’ve never let him go off by himself. I should’ve gone with him.”
“No, Kimberly, you must not blame yourself,” Zordon replied. “Even if you had been there, more than likely, you would both be lying here.”
Billy placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Zordon is right. You can’t blame yourself for Rita’s crazy schemes. We all feel badly for what happened to him.”
“I know. Its just……hey, where is his communicator?” asked Kimberly after checking both of Tommy’s wrists. She quickly searched through his back pack. “It’s not in there either.”
“He must’ve lost it in the struggle,” said Jason “Trini, I want you, and Zack to go back and see if you can find it.”
“Wait, I’ll go with you guys,” said Kimberly.
“Are you sure?” asked Trini.
“Yeah. I can’t just stand here and do nothing. At least this way it’ll feel like I’m actually helping in some way.”
“Alright then,” nodded Trini as the trio teleported out leaving momentary flashes of brilliant yellow, pink, and black light.
“Uh, speaking of losing things, I kinda accidentally forgot my bag back at the Youth Center. We left in such a hurry….”
“Don’t worry about, Billy. You stay here and help Alpha. I’ll go back and grab it for you.” “Trini,” Jason said speaking directly into his wrist communicator. “I’m going back to the juice bar real quick, but I want all of us to meet back here at the Power Chamber asap.”
****************************
The Youth Center had become quiet busy in the short time since they had left. There was some kind of gathering or party and ,by the sound of things, everyone seemed to be having a good time. A peak over at the counter revealed Ernie being swamped by orders, most of them coming from teenagers that enjoyed using the place for social events.
Luckily, their table from earlier was still unoccupied as Jason made his way over.
He found the blue backpack lying underneath the table where Billy had dropped it. After quickly checking inside to make sure the Blue Ranger’s morpher was still there, he slung the bag over a shoulder and went out the exit.
With all the people coming in and out, he would have to find a less populated area before teleporting back to headquarters. Jason discreetly zipped around to the rear of the building. He took a quick but careful glance of his surroundings- a row of high shrubs on two sides provided a perfect cover. He placed his finger on the button and was about to activate the device, when he felt a strong hand rudely grab his shoulder from behind.
