Chapter 3
Across a crowded room...
This time he woke up in the clean white of the medical center, and the HI, in the form of a kindly looking
grandmother was talking to his mother and father.
"Your son suffered a concussion, a broken rib, and minor abrasions. We want to keep him overnight for observation. And he's awake, so you can double check for yourself."
"Thank you." Jonathan said coldly. Everyone in town hated HI's: it reminded them of all they had lost and all they had gained since the coming of the Kryptonians.
"Don't mention it." It said sweetly, and disappeared.
"I'll never get used to that." Jonathan muttered.
Martha ignored him, and turned to her adopted son."Honey, are you alright?" She asked her concern filling the cold places in Lex's body. She was also very pissed off at him. He felt it just under the surface,
"Yeah, just a little....achey. And embarassed. And pissed off at myself for wrecking the car."
"Don't forget almost killing yourself and me I might add" The boy said with just a hint of malice in the words.
Lex turned to his left, and saw that his savior was lounging in one of the chairs.
Looking at him now, Lex realized the boy was drop dead gorgeous. Black hair, green eyes, golden sun-kissed skin, and the most beautiful lips he had ever seen his life: Lips that had been pressed against his just a few short hours ago. But something about him wasn't right.
"My name is Kal Anderson. Pleased to meetcha." He smiled, no smirked. Like he owned the world and could crush it in his large...manly hands.
"I've never seen you before." Lex said.
"Of course not. I just moved to town." Clark's smirk turned into a lazy smile.
"No one just moves to town." Lex replied archly.
"If no one did, then how I get here?" the boy shot back with a coquettish wink of his eye. Lex blushed as the boy's gaze became decidely flirtatious.
Lex was ready to challenge the boys circular and species logic, but he was interrupted.
"Kal" The boy went from indolence to rigid attention at the tone of command in that voice. Lex turned to the door to see who or what could make the boy move so fast.
The man was tall, and looked incredibly like the boy except...ruthless rather than indolent. Command and power emanated from him in waves: He reminded Lex of Lionel Luthor, his biological father and star of his childhood nightmares. He shivered.
Marth put her hand on Lex's: "Are you cold?"
"No, just..." and his gaze met the man's and Lex Kent was a 9 year old, cowering under the merciless glare of a cold unforgiving predator.
But luckily, Lex wasn't his prey and he didn't hold his gaze for too long.
"Come here, Kal"
The boy looked terrified and angry at the same time, but he walked to the older man who grabbed his arm in a death grip.
The boy winced in pain as the older man whispered in his ear. He let go suddenly.
"Um..." Kal's eyes were bright, and he feigned a smile for everyone in the room. "I have to get home and finish unpacking. Yeah. See you around!" He said to Lex, and left the room.
The man stayed and his hard gaze swept over everyon in the room, and his expression softened the tiniest bit. "My son and I just moved to town today. My name is Zed... Anderson." He held out his hand to Jonathan who shook it without a trace of reservation.
Lex loved his father, but he wasn't the most perceptive person on the planet. He was so good-hearted, he couldn't recognize pure evil if it walked up and bit him on the ass.
"Jonathan Kent. This is my wife Martha."
"Lovely." Zed said, inclining his head and smiling a bit.
"And this knucklehead is my son Lex." Zed didn't smile at him. Interesting.
"Where are you guys staying?" Jonathan asked.
"They assigned us to the castle. It's the only place open, and we need a lot of space."
"And what are you doing?" Martha asked warily. She wasn't fooled.
"Oh, well I'll be managing the fertilizer plant and overseeing a little scientific operation for the Kryptonians."
Jonathan's gaze darkened: Mention the Ants and that usually got him riled up.
"So you're working for...them."
"It was that or death." He smiled like a shark all teeth and menance. "One can do so much more on the inside, if you know what I mean."
"Yeah." Jonathan said.
was all Lex heard.
"In fact, I wanted to talk to your son here and ask him if he wanted a job. I know he's teaching the AP Chemistry class over at the highschool, but he's wasted there. With his scientific mind, he should be doing research."
"How do you know about that?" Lex asked.
"It's my job to know things like this." He smiled again. "I'll let you get your rest. Think about my offer."
"You and your son should come over to dinner when you guys get settled. We have to thank him for saving Lex's life, anyway." Martha said.
"Of course. Maybe next week when your son is feeling better?" And he was gone. Lex didn't even know he was holding his breath until it all came out in a loud sigh.
"That guy..." Lex began...
"I know, honey." Martha said.
