Truths and Turmoil

Part 4. Truths and Turmoil

At 7:30, on the dot, Beth’s doorbell rang. She had just finished getting ready a few minutes earlier. The dress fit her perfectly. It clung to her curves and accented her large breasts. She studied herself in the mirror for a second and felt like she resembled Marilyn Monroe in a way. She walked to the door, wrapping herself in the shawl that came with the dress.

There was Chris, in a gorgeous black suit, with a waistcoat. He smiled at her as he took in her beauty.

“You look magnificent, my darling. Absolutely magnificent.”

“And you look gorgeous as well.” Beth smiled.

“Shall we go then, Chris asked?” A black cab was waiting.

“Sure! Where are we going to?”

“You’ll sey dey dear. You’ll see.”

The cab drove to Soho. Chris whispered in her ear, “You’re so beautiful I could take you right now and skip dinner.”

Beth smiled and brushed him away. She gave him a long kiss and giggled.

The cab pulled up outside of The Ivy. Beth gasped, “We’re not going to The Ivy, are we?”

Chris smiled, and said, “Of course we are. Where do you think I’d take you dressed like that? McDonalds?”

They got out of the cab and Chris paid the driver. He approached the doorman.

“Reservation for Deakin?”

“Right this way, Mr. Deakin.” He led them to a cozy table for two, with a view of the street.

Beth looked around her. Penelope Keith was eating there. As was George Clooney and Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. At a table by the back wall there was some of the cast members of “Bobby’s Helmet” – a TV ‘reality’ cop show that had become a mainstream staple of British TV. The bloke who played DS Jack Bailstrom, a ginger chap with a reputation for unconventional methods was telling a joke loudly. Everyone was laughing. His character sort of reminded her of John in a way. That is, if TV could ever imitate life.

Chris leaned across the table and raised his eyebrows. “What do you think?” he asked her.

“I think this is the most amazing first date I’ve ever been on!” Beth gushed. “I can’t believe how many stars are here.”

“Yeah, the cast of “Bobby’s Helmet”. Bloody amateurs. They wouldn’t last five minutes on the street.”

Beth giggled. “I take it you’re not a fan, then?”

Chris said, “I admit to liking it before I started the job. Once you get a taste of real life, all the fiction seems a bit out of touch.”

“I’ve watched it since the beginning. I always liked it. I know it’s such a faux pas but I’d love to ask them for their autographs!”

“Do you wan get get us kicked out of here or what?” Chris laughed.

“Would you like to order some drinks, sir?” The waiter asked.

“Yes, we’ll have a bottle of Dom Peringon vintage 1973.”

“Would you like that now?” the waiter seemed impressed by Chris’ choice.

“Yes.”

Beth smiled. This had to be costing him a fortune. First it was the dress, and the jewellery, and now this fabulous meal.

“So tell me, how did you manage to get into a place like this at such short notice? Or did you make reservations six months ago in the hope of picking up a girl by tonig she she teased.

“Let’s just say that I know the owner and leave it at that.” Chris smile‘Nic‘Nice one, Don,’ he thought to himself. “So, what are you having?”

“I was thinking of having the cod in parsley sauce.” Beth smiled.

“If you wanted cod I could have taken you to the chippy down the road from my place!” Chris laughed.

“Why, what are you having?” she asked.

“The beef in Guinness sounds ideal,” Chris smiled. “My daddy had a pint of Guinness every day and he lived to be 93.”

“Guinness really is good for you, I reckon.” Beth grinned.

The waiter came back with the champagne. He opened it and poured them each a glass.

Chris toasted, “To us, to a beautiful relationship and to the future.”

Beth smiled and clinked with him. She sipped the champagne which was like heaven on her tongue.

“This is good…” she said, “This is very good.”

Chris smiled to himself. The waiter returned and Chris ordered for both of them.

After the waiter left, Chris smiled at her. “So now that I’ve gotten you out of the bedroom for the time being, tell me, has John said anything?”

“He told me that he loved me, and wanted to know what I saw in you. He wanted to know if I loved him. If he could do anything to make me love him.”

“And what did you say?”

“I told him I needed time. Well, it’s true, I do need some time! I care about him – in fact I think I do love him. But I also care about you. And I know we haven’t been together for more than a day, but I’ve had feelings for you from before that. I want to see where we go before I tie myself down.”

“And how did he take it?”

“Not very well. He refuses to let me go, and what’s more, he thinks that having sex with me in an interview room is what I’m after.”

“In an interview room? Please. The least he could have done was taken you to the DI’s office,” Chris teased.
Beth blushed slightly. Chris rubbed his leg against hers and smiled warmly.

“What is it that you’re after if it’s not sex in an interview room?” he asked her.

“I’m after… this!” Beth gestured around the table, “Romance, someone caring about me and fulfilling my needs. John is such a boy, and he works hard, to his credit, but he deprives me of him. I want someone who can put things in priority. But yet, I know what he is and I love him for it. Integrity. You know, you’ve never met a man with more integrity than what John has.”

“But integrity doesn’t make for a good bedfellow, does it?” Chris asked.

“No. Well you know how it is!”

“I suppose I do, don’t I.” Chris smiled, “But still, it’s a lousy thing to do to your subordinates. But how could I resist you? I’ve known my share of beautiful women in my day, but you are, by far the most intelligent, lovely and gorgeous! Beth, I don’t mean to put added pressure on you, but I think I’m falling in love with you.”

“What, after two shags?”

“No, Beth, it’s more than that,” Chris looked slightly annoyed, “It’s everything about you. I’ve watched you since you came to Sun Hill and I wanted you. I can’t help it, Beth. I fell in love with you the moment you walked through the door.”

“I didn’t realise, Chris…”

“Well please know that I want you, now, and I want you always. I couldn’t give a toss if John Boulton wants you as well, or what he thinks about me, or you, or this relationship. I want you.”

Beth was almost speechless. She sipped her champagne. The food arrived and they ate in relative silence for the rest of the meal. Chris paid the cheque and they caught another taxi.

“Have I made things awkward?” Chris asked Beth, “I didn’t mean to spoil things. I want you to know how I feel so there is no confusion.”

Beth turned to face Chris, “There is no confusion. I know what I want now.”

She pulled Chris to her and they kissed slowly, passionately. It was only broken by the cabbie asking “Where are we going?”

“The Savoy, mate.” Chris smiled and held Beth close. “That is, if it’s alright with you.”

Beth grinned and snuggled into him. “I’m not complaining.”

* * *

Beth and Chris swept into the front room of the Savoy. She admired the chandeliers and the opulent surroundings. Chris went over to the front desk and came back a few minutes later with the key.

“Let’s go up, love,” he said to her.

She linked her arm with his, and admired their reflection in the glass. They made a really gorgeous couple. They walked down the hallway and went up the elevator to the sixth floor. He pulled her towards him as the doors closed and kissed her over and over again.

They made their way down the hallway and found their room. Chris unlocked the door and held it open for Beth. Standing inside was Don Beech.

“What are you doing here?” she asked incredulously.

“Well, hello, Beth.” Don said, “How are you finding your evening?”

“Um, fine. What are you doing here?” She repeated.

Chris walked into the room and stood next to Don.

“Don and I have a bit of an ..arrangement. You see Beth, he has been watching you too and wants you as well. Are you up for both of us?”

Beth was silent for a moment as she surveyed the situation. Then it sunk in exactly what was being asked of her.

“No I’m bloody not! You’re sick, both of you are so so sick! John told me about you too but I didn’t believe him! Now I see just what your game is. You both can go stuff yourselves!”

Beth turned and ran out of the room. Chris followed her, calling her name. She ran down the six flights of stairs and through the maze like corridors. The tears were causing her mascara to run. A cab was just emptying at the front door. She pushed her way past the people getting out and told the cabbie to take her home. For the 30-minute journey back to her flat she sat and cried.
