A Step in Love's Direction
______________________________
Moving in with Kerry was a hassle. So much to do so little time to
do it in. Either she had a shift or I had a shift. Maybe both of us
at the same time. What should have taken a week took almost three.
But we had help in the end.
From Susan of all people.
I know she and Kerry made their piece but she still unnerves me. And that fact that I'd been attracted to the woman she was currently dating didn't help. It was just a little attraction, honest.
Hero worship perhaps, she did help with my mother after all.
"Kerry told me your moving in together" Susan said taking a seat
next to me in the lounge. It's not like I'm avoiding her, but she
doesn't make me very comfortable. I'm probably just to stubborn to
make friends.
"Yeah, but it's taking forever, and we have so much to do, and no
time to do it in" I bitched. I really was tired of not seeing Kerry
because I was packing or working and she was packing, or sleeping. I needed more Kerry-time.
"I'm free every morning this week if you'd like help" she was
sincere about it too. I guess she doesn't harbor any hard feelings
for me.
"Sure" who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth? Those things bit
you know.
"Kim would like to help to, if your okay with it" Susan seemed
pensive. I had no clue why. I wish I hadn't asked.
"Why wouldn't I be okay with it?" I liked Kim, aside from the dead
sexy thing, she was a great person.
"Well she and Kerry used to date. I thought you might not want her
around. Some people can't handle it..." she said more but my mind
was gone.
Kim and Kerry? She'd never mentioned dating any women before me. Not that I expected to be her first. I just took for granted that I was.My mistake.
"Oh it's fine" I think I said this in a normal voice because she
just smiled and went on about something Carter said.
The poor fool was still hitting on her.
"Tell him your gay" I shrugged "I'm sure he'll only be a little dick about it" I joked.
"Right I can see it now 'I'm sorry Carter but my heart belongs to
someone already. 'Who Susan? What do they do for you that I don't?'
Then I'd have to scare the shit out of him when I answer
cunnilingus" she said this straight faced. I couldn't say the word
to Kerry at all. Never pegged myself shy but even I have limits to
what I'll say.
I laughed. It was just to rich. I could picture Carter asking her
that. Even his speechlessness at the answer. Now that I'd pay to
see. I told her as much.
"Give me forty and I'll do it in front of Frank to" She raised her
brows and sipped her coffee as if this weren't the most hiliarious
conversation to have at the work place.
"Would you start duscussing the merits of it?" I asked.
I didn't know coffee could come out of your nose. Good thing the
stuff was lukewarm otherwise Susan would be in alot of pain.
She raced for a towel to wipe her face with. She turned back around
holding the towel to her nose, when Kerry unexpectedly entered.
"I though you were gonna sleep today" I said in way of greeting. I
could see the bags beneath her eyes.
"Is your nose bleeding?" she asked Susan "I would be sleeping except you not there" she smiled sweetly at me and kissed my hair. I loved it when she did that.
"Abby wants me to discuss the merits of cunnilingus with Frank and
Carter" Susan explained around the towel "I wasn't expecting her
comment so my coffee made a reappearance in my nose" she sniffed a
few times "Snells like hazel nut"
"Tastes like shit" Kerry remarked when she sipped mine. I had to
agree. Not that I really know what shit tastes like. But the coffee
had to come pretty close.
"Susan offered to help us move" Kerry took the seat next to me and
grabbed my hand. She squeezed my fingers and kissed them.
"That's nice, thanks Susan" Kerry scooted closer to me.
"I didn't know you dated Kim Legaspi"
Kerry stiffened "Yeah, a year ago. Didn't work out. She's a good
friend though"
"I know" I didn't push further. One thing I'd learned about Kerry is she's an extremely private person. If she wanted to talk about this she'd do it at home "Susan's free every morning this week. Does that work into the schedule?"
She took a moment to think. I swear she has a month planner in her
head "I can't do tomorrow. I know your free, but I can do the rest
of the week. Friday we can all do it together"
I few dirty images race through my mind at that point. Crap, I'm
really juvenile sometimes.
"Sounds like a plan" Susan's not holding the towel to her nose
anymore "We'll be there around say 9am" we agree "Nice we'll bring
breakfast, you get lunch?"
"Deal" Kerry smiled, actually smiled. for the first time in days the love of my life smiled.
"Then it's a date" Susan clapped her hands.

They pulled up at 8:50. Who's says women are always late? Maybe it's a lesbian thing. Wait fag time is 15 minutes after everything else. I don't know maybe their just weird.
They brought bagels, and muffins, and god bless them, coffee. Real
coffee, not the shitty stuff like in the lounge. I drank it black,
something I rarely do.
"So what goes in storage and what goes to the love nest?" Kim asked
looking around my place.
I think it's a nice place, not to big, not cluttered. My own
personal design. Not much left really, between most of my stuff
being at Kerry's anyway, and our sporadic bouts of packing. But it's enough to see my style.
"There's a little bit left in the bedroom, and some of the kitchen
supplies. Whatever Kerry wants" I headed into the bedroom. The only
thing left in my closet are dresses, and other formal wear that I'll never put on.
"Whoa" Kim is right behing me. I didn't hear her follow me in, not
that I was paying attention. "I thought I had a lot of clothes"
"Actually everything I wear is over at Kerry's" I shrug "This is the stuff I hope I never have to wear"
Kim just laughs. She pushes that gorgeous hair out of her eyes, and
looks around at what's left.
"Your leaving the bed?" she seems puzzled by this.
"Actually the apartment came with the bedroom furnished. They all
do. It's the rest of the decor that you do yourself" I start pulling down my formal wear and handing it to her.
She lays it over her arm piece by piece until she can't hold
anymore. She makes several trips out to my car laying it gently into the back seat.
After her last trip we help in the kitchen.
"My god Ker-bear you must be in heaven" Kim makes the remark
automatically. I doubt she even thought about using her pet name for my partner, it was just automatic.
Everyone notices, but no one says a thing.
"Actually I'm surprised Abby has so much. She claims she can't cook" Kerry eyes me for a moment. I really don't know why I have so much stuff. Might be left over from one of my mother's manic jags.
Probably is, I don't remember buying any of the stuff. Which means
it's probably stolen.
Though how she snuck out that huge crock pot I'll never know.
"Just in case I started dating a chef. I thought I should be ready"
I joke winking at her. She blushes. There's one curse I love about
the red-heads.
"Wow I actually think we're done with the packing part. Now we run
it to Kerry's and the storage place. What do we do tomorrow?" Susan
closes up the last kitchen box. I honestly thought this would take
longer myself. I'm not complaining though.
"Well I switched shifts to be here today. So I'm working tomorrow"
Kerry runs her fingers through her hair. She's slightly sweaty so it makes it spike up. She looks so cute like that.
"We clean, and clear out. I want my deposit back so I can spoil
Kerry" I stretch. I can feel every tired muscle.
"You guys want to get dinner?" Kim askes. She's looks as tired as
the rest of us.
"I want a shower and a snooze" I reply honestly.
"I'm with you there" Susan's hairs is matted with sweat and dust. We look like we've been working hard. Maybe we have, I haven't noticed, I actually enjoyed today.
"So sleep it is" Kerry bangs an imaginary gavel "I sentence you all
to a good nights sleep"
We all give tired chuckles.
"So I'll meet you here same time tomorrow?" Susan asks "Kim's
working too, it'll just be the two of us"
"It works" I'm actually looking forward to this. Susan isn't so bad
at all.

We've showered and we're cuddling in the bed when Kerry brings Kim
up.
"Abby about Kim" she takes a breath to steel herself for this. But I surprise her.
I press my fingers lovingly to her lips until she meets my eyes.
"Kerry, Kim was last year" I whisper a kiss to her mouth "I'm right
now"
"And forever" she says huskily "Now and forever"
