Interlude Four: These Bonfires in My Spine

I am not some stone commission
Like a statue in a park
I am flesh and blood and vision
I am howling in the dark

Birkoff didn't need to look up to know that Operations was watching him. He could feel it, and these days, it was a safe bet to assume he was being watched, regardless. He kept his head down and focused his attention on his work. In his peripheral vision, he saw Madeline leave Ops' office, and he wondered whether she'd been talking to Ops about him.

He glanced over at Michael, who was speaking with another operative across the room. He knew Michael had been called in to talk to Operations, and he didn't have to think hard to guess what about. At least Michael hadn't been disciplined, as far as Birkoff knew.

Part of him was glad about that - the security breach hadn't been Michael's fault, after all.

Part of him, however, wanted to tell Madeline and Ops just where they could stick their goddamn rules, especially considering that they blithely ignored said rules on a regular basis. He wondered if they honestly thought no one knew they were sleeping together, or if they just didn't care. Hypocrites. It made him want to slam himself into a wall.

Better yet, he'd like to slam them into a wall.

Michael looked over and their eyes met for a moment, then Michael gave him a brief nod before returning to his conversation. Birkoff blushed and swallowed hard, ducking his head and trying to concentrate on his work.

He forced himself to ignore the pointless longing in his heart. He'd meant what he said to Madeline, and he wasn't so naive as to hope for what he could never have.

He'd been just naive enough, however, to believe that one night could satisfy the ache inside him. And now he was realizing how foolish he'd been.

Having a dream come true for just a little while, it seemed, hurt more than if it never came true at all.

And all we ever wanted
was just to come in from the cold
